A better understanding of tornado-induced wind loads is needed to improve the design of typical structures to resist these winds. An accurate understanding of the loads requires knowledge of near-ground tornado winds, but observations in this region are lacking. The first goal of this study was to verify how well a CFD model, when driven by far field radar observations and laboratory measurements, could capture the flow characteristics of both full scale and laboratory-simulated tornadoes. A second goal was to use the model to examine the sensitivity of the simulations to various parameters that might affect the laboratory simulator tornado. An understanding of near-ground winds in tornadoes will require coordinated efforts in both computational and physical simulation. The sensitivity of computational simulations of a tornado to geometric parameters and surface roughness within a domain based on the Iowa State University laboratory tornado simulator was investigated. In this study, CFD simulations of the flow field in a model domain that represents a laboratory tornado simulator were conducted using Doppler radar and laboratory velocity measurements as boundary conditions. The tornado was found to be sensitive to a variety of geometric parameters used in the numerical model. Increased surface roughness was found to reduce the tangential speed in the vortex near the ground and enlarge the core radius of the vortex. The core radius was a function of the swirl ratio while the peak tangential flow was a function of the magnitude of the total inflow velocity. The CFD simulations showed that it is possible to numerically simulate the surface winds of a tornado and control certain parameters of the laboratory simulator to influence the tornado characteristics of interest to engineers and match those of the field.
Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) is to estimate potential soil loss and has benefit in use with its simplicity. The equation is composed of five factors, one of the factors is the slope length and steepness factor (LS factor) that is for topographic property of fields to estimate potential soil loss. Since the USLE was developed, many equations to compute LS was suggested with field measurement. Nowadays the factor is often computed in GIS software with digital elevation model, however it was reported that the factor is very sensitive to the resolution of digital elevation model. In addition, the digital elevation model of high resolution less than 3 meter is required in small field application, however these inputs are not associate with the empirical models' backgrounds since the empirical models were derived in 22.1 meter field measurements. In the study, four equation to compute LS factor and two approaches to determine slope length and steepness were examined, and correction factor was suggested to provide reasonable precision in LS estimations. The correction factor is computed with field area and cell size of digital elevation model, thus the correction factor can be adapted in any USLE-based models using LS factor at field level.
Turbulent temperature field in a channel subject to strong wall injection has been investigated via direct numerical simulation technique. These flows are pertinent to internal flows inside hybrid rocket motors. A simplified model problem where a regression process at the propellant surface is idealized by wall injection has been investigated to understand how the temperature field is modified. The effect of strong wall injection displaces thermal boundary layer away from the wall and this causes a sharp drop of friction temperature. Turbulent diffusivity and dissipation time scale for temperature field are found to show large variations in the streamwise direction under application of wall blowing. It is, thus, expected that more sophisticated turbulence models would be required to predict the disturbed temperature field accurately.
In this paper, the wave propagation in an infinite poroelastic cylindrical bone with cavity is studied. An exact closed form solution is presented by employing an analytical procedure. The frequency equation for poroelastic bone is obtained when the boundaries are stress free and is examined numerically. The magnitude of the frequency equation, wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are calculated for poroelastic bone for different values of magnetic field, density and frequency. In wet bone little frequency dispersion was observed, in contrast to the results of earlier studies. Such a model would in particular be useful in large-scale parametric studies of bone mechanical response. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, density and frequency on wave propagation in poroelastic bone are very pronounced.
As an automobile tends to be high grade, the needs for more luxurious interior and comfortable HVAC system are emerged. The defrosting ability is another major factor of the performances of HVAC system. The present work is to simulate the flow and the temperature field of cabin interior during the defrost mode. The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation were solved on the multi blocked grid system by the iterative time marching method and AF scheme, respectively. The present computations were validated by the comparison of the temperature field of a driven cavity and velocity field of 1/5 model scale of an automobile. Generally good agreements were obtained. By the present computation, the complicated features of flow and temperature within the automotive cabin interior could be well understood.
The purpose of this study is to develop an aging friendly guideline aging friendly outdoor exercise environment in Universal design aspect. The aim for this guideline is to suggest a creative method to cope with forthcoming aging society and meet the various demands of all park users. Documentary survey and field survey were used to extract notion of universal design and aging friendly design; based from the extracted notions three types of exercise environment were suggested, Small scale, Medium scale and Large scale. The significant of this guideline is as fallow: First, negative aspects of aging friendly design can be eliminated by adopting universal design; therefore the guideline can have social integration aspect. Second, reflected needs of residents can be suggested on the guideline; and it was extracted from documentary survey, PPP UD checklist and field survey. Third, classifying universal design and aging friendly design in one guideline can enhance ability to manage various composition of population. Fourth, by studying young child and old people's likeness and parallel resemblance, design guideline for forthcoming aging society can be suggested. Fifth, from three developed exercise environments, the guideline can be applied into different conditions of location. Sixth, canopy type design model can be very useful for old people.
The effect of fluctuation of Equivalence Ratio (ER) in a turbulent reactive field has been studied in order to check the global combustion characteristics induced by the local fluctuation. When the flow is premixed on a large scale, closer examination on a small scale reveals that local fluctuations of ER exist in an imperfectly premixed mixture, and that these fluctuations must be considered to correctly estimate the mean reaction rate. The fluctuation effect is analyzed with DNS by considering the joint PDF of reactive scalar and ER, followed by modeling study where an extension of stochastic mixing models accounting for the ER fluctuation is reviewed and tested. It was found that models prediction capability as well as its potential is in favor to this case accounting the local ER fluctuation. However, the effect of local fluctuation did not show any notable changes on the mean global characteristics of combustion when statistical independence between the reactive scalar and ER field is imposed, though it greatly influenced the joint PDF distribution. The importance of taking into account the statistical dependency between ER and combustible at the initial phase is demonstrated by testing the modeled reaction rate.

The field of land surveying is changing dramatically due to the way data is processed, analyzed and presented. Also, there is a growing demand for digital spatial information, coming primarily from the GIS (Geographical Information System) user community. Such a demand has created a strong development potential for a new land surveying software. An overview of the development and capabilities of a land surveying software platform based on the Windows system, SurveyingMap, is presented. Among its many features, SurveyingMap provides a lot of adaptability for networks adjustment, geodetic and plane coordinates transformation, contouring, sectioning, DTM (Digital Terrain Model) generation, and large scale mapping applications. The system output is compatible with well known computer aided drafting (CAD) /GIS packages to expand its scope of applications. SurveyingMap is also suitable for non-technical users due to the user-friendly graphic user interface. The system could be used in engineering, architecture, GIS, and academic teaching and research, among other fields. Two applications of SurveyingMap, extension of field control and large scale mapping, for the case study area are established. The results demonstrate that the system is adaptable and reasonably priced for use by college and university students.
A three-dimensional mesoscale atmospheric dispersion modeling system consisting of the Lagrangian particle dispersion model (LPDM) and the meteorological mesoscale model (MM5) was employed to simulate the transport and dispersion of non-reactive pollutant during the nuclear spill event occurred from Sep. 31 to Oct. 3, 1999 in Tokaimura city, Japan. For the comparative analysis of numerical experiment, two more sets of foreign mesoscale modeling system; NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) and DWD (Deutscher Wetter Dienst) were also applied to address the applicability of air pollution dispersion predictions. We noticed that the simulated results of horizontal wind direction and wind velocity from three meteorological modeling showed remarkably different spatial variations, mainly due to the different horizontal resolutions. How-ever, the dispersion process by LPDM was well characterized by meteorological wind fields, and the time-dependent dilution factors ($\chi$/Q) were found to be qualitatively simulated in accordance with each mesocale meteorogical wind field, suggesting that LPDM has the potential for the use of the real time control at optimization of the urban air pollution provided detailed meteorological wind fields. This paper mainly pertains to the mesoscale modeling approaches, but the results imply that the resolution of meteorological model and the implementation of the relevant scale of air quality model lead to better prediction capabilities in local or urban scale air pollution modeling.
Trajectory dispersion models are used for the dispersion calculations in air quality assessments, Yellow-sand modeling, environmental planning and the emergency response. Meso-scale forcing and coastal circulations are calculated by trajectory model in the East Asia region. In this study the meteorological fields (GDAS and MM5) coupled to the trajectory model (HY-SPLIT) are applied to simulate the transport and the dispersion. Seoul is selected as a starting point of the HY-SPLIT. The sensitivity studies are performed by conducting an ensemble of simulations using the GDAS and the MM5 model for the same dispersion cases. The results in this study show a significant difference depending on the resolution of meteorological models. Additionally, in most cases of the compared tionally, results from MM5 and GDAS, the absolute and relative distance, shows significant difference and the difference increased with the increasing distance of HY-SPLIT. Therefore, for the case of small domai for twi d field distefbution over complex terrai, should be used only high model temporal or spatial resolution to improve the HY-SPLIT model results.
