  • In 1990's, two types of land consolidation has been widely carried out to enforce competativeness of rice production in Korea. One is so called large-scale land consolidation for resizing paddy field and farm road, the other is general land consolidation for changing both size and shape of field, water channel and farm road. This study was conducted to evaluate how much effect on fm mechanization the land consolidation had. To evaluate the influence of the land consolidation, theoretical analysis and surveys were accomplished. Land consolidation was analyzed to increase field efficiency by 180 to 670% depending on the type of land consolidation and machine selection. Also, land consolidation brought increment of real working time ratio by reducing traveling time on farm road. Trends of large scale mechanization and increment of custom work were observed to be accelerated by land consolidation. It also gave effect on the pattern of machine troubles. Farmers were conscious of the influence of land consolidation on machine utilization, however, in plains level of satisfaction was shown to be low.

  • In order to assimilate MHS satellite data into the convective scale model at KMA, ATOVS data are reprocessed to utilize the original high-resolution data. And then to improve the preprocessing experiments for cloud detection were performed and optimized to convective-scale model. The experiment which is land scattering index technique added to Observational Processing System to remove contaminated data showed the best result. The analysis fields with assimilation of MHS are verified against with ECMWF analysis fields and fit to other observations including Sonde, which shows improved results on relative humidity fields at sensitive level (850-300 hPa). As the relative humidity of upper troposphere increases, the bias and RMSE of geopotential height are decreased. This improved initial field has a very positive effect on the forecast performance of the model. According to improvement of model field, the Equitable Threat Score (ETS) of precipitation prediction of $1{\sim}20mm\;hr^{-1}$ was increased and this impact was maintained for 27 hours during experiment periods.

  • In this paper, physical scale modeling was employed to identify the configurations of ICCP system and the electric field signatures. Computational boundary element modeling technique has been used to simulate the performance of the CP system and to predict the associated electric fields signatures. The optimization methods combined with the computer models and physical scale modeling will be presented here, which enable the optimum system design to be achieved both in terms of the location and current output of the anode but also in the location of reference electrodes for impressed current cathodic protection(ICCP) systems. The combined methodology was utilized to determine optimal placement of ICCP components (anodes and reference electrodes) and to evaluate performance of ICCP system for the 2%, 10% and 14% wetted hull coatings loss. The objective is to design the system to minimise the electric field while at the same time provide adequate protection for the ship. The results show that experimental scale modeling and computational modeling techniques can be used in concert to design an optimum ICCP system and to provide information for quickly analysis of the system and its surrounding environment.

  • After facing the fact such as fossil-fuel depletion, global warming, the Kyoto Protocol coming into force of mandatory reductions of carbon dioxide, the world is actively promoting the spread of the solar, wind, tidal, geothermal and other clean renewable energy technology development. Among them, wind power is the only alternative energy to secure a comparable price competition with fossil fuels because cheaper price power generation than other renewable energy when creating large-scale wind farm, thus wind power is the fastest growing industries in the world in the renewable energy field. Especially the offshore wind power is showing rapid growth as most of the wind power sector because of less changes of wind speed, no restrictions of land use, and large-scale development of offshore wind power. In this paper, the field of site selection and spatial location analysis techniques for development of large-scale offshore wind farm are discussed primarily. This paper shows overview of offshore wind power and establishment procedure for development of offshore wind farm.

  • In analyzing the nano-scale phenomena or behaviors of nano devices or materials, it is often desirable to deal with more atoms than can be treated only with a full atomistic simulation. However, even now, it is advisable to apply the atomistic simulation to the narrow region where the deformation field changes rapidly but to apply the conventional continuum model to the region far from that region. This equivalent continuum model can be formulated by applying the Cauchy-Born rule to the exact atomistic potential as in the quasicontinuum method. To couple the atomistic model with the equivalent continuum model, continuum displacements are conformed to the molecular displacements at the discrete positions of the atoms within the bridging domain. To satisfy the coupling constraints, we apply the Lagrange multiplier method. The continuum model in the bridging model should be applied on the region where the deformation field changes gradually. Then we can make the nodal spacing in the continuum model be much larger than the atomic spacing. In the first step, we generate the atomic-resolution mesh with the nodal spacing equal to the atomic spacing, and then we eliminate the nodal degrees of freedom adaptively using the node deactivation techniques. We eliminate more DOFs as the regions are more far from the atomistic region. Computing time and computational resources can be greatly reduced by the present node deactivation technique in multi scale analysis.

  • The 246.8-m-tall Beijing Olympic Tower (BOT) is a new landmark in Beijing City, China. Its unique architectural style with five sub-towers and a large tower crown gives rise to complex dynamic characteristics. Thus, it is wind-sensitive, and a double-stage pendulum tuned mass damper (DPTMD) has been installed for vibration mitigation. In this study, a finite-element analysis of the wind-induced responses of the tower based on full-scale measurement results was performed. First, the structure of the BOT and the full-scale measurement are introduced. According to the measured dynamic characteristics of the BOT, such as the natural frequencies, modal shapes, and damping ratios, an accurate finite-element model (FEM) was established and updated. On the basis of wind measurements, as well as wind-tunnel test results, the wind load on the model was calculated. Then, the wind-induced responses of the BOT with the DPTMD were obtained and compared with the measured responses to assess the numerical wind-induced response analysis method. Finally, the wind-induced serviceability of the BOT was evaluated according to the field measurement results for the wind-induced response and was found to be satisfactory for human comfort.

  • This paper presents the analysis results on the electrical output performance characteristics of a 746 W high temperature superconducting generator (HTSG). The HTS field winding is charged by non-contact excitation method, i.e., contactless superconducting field exciter (CSFE) which is originated by rotary flux pump based on permanent magnet. In this paper, the preliminary current charging test was carried out using a 70 A CSFE to evaluate the performance of field exciter and analyze its non-contact excitation characteristics for the full-scale HTS field winding of the 746 W HTSG. First, the various contactless current-charging tests were conducted using assembly with HTS field winding and CSFE. Then, in order to estimate the output power performance characteristics of the 746 W HTSG, finite element analysis was conducted based on field excitation information which is experimentally measured under various operating conditions. Finally, the electrical output characteristics in no-load and load models were simulated by two-dimensional transient solver in ANSYS electromagnetics 19.0 release.

  • Due to droughts and water shortages causing severe damage to crops and other vegetations, much attention has been given to efficient irrigation for upland farming. However, little information has been known to measure soil moisture levels in a field scale and apply their spatial variability for proper irrigation scheduling. This study aimed to characterize the spatial variability and temporal stability of soil water contents at depths of 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm on flat (loamy soil) and hill-slope fields (silt-loamy soil). Field monitoring of soil moisture contents was used for variogram analysis using GS+ software. Kriging produced from the structural parameters of variogram was applied for the means of spatial prediction. The overall results showed that the surface soil moisture presented a strong spatial dependence at the sampling time and space in the field scale. The coefficient variation (CV) of soil moisture was within 7.0~31.3 % in a flat field and 8.3~39.4 % in a hill-slope field, which was noticeable in the dry season rather than the rainy season. The drought assessment analysis showed that only one day (Dec. 21st) was determined as dry (20.4 % and 24.5 % for flat and hill-slope fields, respectively). In contrary to a hill-slope field where the full irrigation was necessary, the centralized irrigation scheme was appeared to be more effective for a flat field based on the spatial variability of soil moisture contents. The findings of this study clearly showed that the geostatistical analysis of soil moisture contents greatly contributes to proper irrigation scheduling for water-efficient irrigation with maximal crop productivity and environmental benefits.

  • The construction industry highly depends on each specialized manager which is essential to successful project. However, a new employee, who has just graduated from architectural engineering college, is requested additional education for 1~2 years such as On-the-Job-Training (O.J.T) to perform his/her professional job in construction site. It is wasteful for both construction company and the employee in terms of time and cost. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the required abilities and analyze the gap of demanded abilities between field managers and students. To collect data for analysis, questionnaire which uses Likert Scale has been performed to both parts. As a result, the analysis show that the graduate's abilities related to field experience get especially low degrees in compare with non-field experience factors. These results will contribute architectural engineering education in college to make more realized.
