  • The magneto impedance (MI) behaviors of patterned $Co_{30}Fe_{34}Ni_{36}$ microwire were investigated with respect to its shape variation. After preparing $Co_{30}Fe_{34}Ni_{36}$ microwires using electrodeposition and photolithography methods, impedance measurements were conducted to compare the MI ratios of the devices with different aspect ratios. As a result, the anisotropy field and transverse permeability were found to be strongly affected by the aspect ratio of the device. The external field value at the maximum impedance and maximum sensitivity of the device was found to increase with increasing device width, which was attributed to the increased transverse anisotropy with decreasing aspect ratio. While an increase in the thickness also contributed to an increase in the MI ratio, a variation in the thickness not only increased the anisotropic field, but the variation in the MI ratio was as also affected by the skin effect. Conversely, the MI ratios of the present devices were hardly affected by variations in the length. Considering the typical aspect ratios of our devices, it was expected that the length effect would emerge when the aspect ratio was reduced to less than 10. Nevertheless, our results show that for the practical application of MI devices, the MI characteristics can be optimized by tailoring the aspect ratio of the devices.

  • In this paper, a temporal color and luminance variation suppression algorithm for a digital video sequence is proposed by considering time-varying light source. When a video sequence is sampled with the periodically emitting illuminant and with a short exposure time, the color rolling phenomenon occurs, where the color and the luminance of the image periodically change from field to field. In conventional signal processing techniques, the luminance variation remaining in the resultant video sequence degrades the constancy of the image sequence. In the proposed method, we obtain video sequences with constant luminance and color by compensating for the inter-field luminance variation. Based on a motion detection technique, the amount of the luminance variation for each channel is estimated on the background of the sequence without the effects of moving objects. The experimental results clearly show that our strategy efficiently estimated the illuminant change without being affected by moving objects, and the variations were efficiently reduced.

  • The GRACE satellite, Launched in March 2002, is applied to research on glacial melt of polar regions, glacial isostatic adjustment(GIA), sea level change, terrestrial water storage(TWS) variation of river basin and large-scale earthquake etc. In this research, the TWS variation of Yangtze river basin from August, 2002 to January, 2009 is analyzed using Level-2 GRACE monthly gravity field model. Particularly, gravity changes of the Three Gorges Dam during the impoundment process in 2003, 2006 and 2008 is observed by estimating equivalent water thickness(EWT). The research results show the distinct annual and seasonal changes of Yangtze river basin, and its amplitude of annual variation is 2.3cm. In addition, we compare the results with water resource statistics and hydrologic observation data to confirm the possibility of research of TWS variation of river basin using GRACE observation data, and also the satellite gravity data is of great help for the research on the movement and periodic changes of river basin.

  • Elevation differences within a paddy field relate strongly to plant health, crop homogeneity, and pest control. For precision agriculture (PA), the elevation within a field should be precisely controlled. We analyzed variation in elevation within a rice paddy field over one crop cycle. The study took place in a rectangular plot (100 m x 30 m). Elevations within the a plots was measured by a laser-equipped surveying instrument, that could determine elevations to precisions of I mm. The test field was divided into grids with 30 squares; elevation was measured at the center of each 5 x 10-m grid square. This study measured elevation during nine observation periods from pre-plowing to post-harvest. Descriptive statistics showed the highest elevations after plowing due to soil disturbance. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant elevation differences before and after plowing and transplanting, although elevations were similar over the period of crop growth. Comparison of pre-plowing and post-harvest data showed differences in elevations, indicating that elevation changes occurred during plowing, rice transplanting, plant growth, and harvesting. In summary, the above statistical analysis indicated that elevation changes occurred due to plowing but not during the plant growth season or due to harvesting.

  • This paper describes a compact and novel wireless vital sign sensor at 2.4 GHz that can detect heartbeat and respiration signals. The oscillator circuit incorporates a planar resonator, which functions as a series feedback element as well as a near-field radiator. The periodic movement of a human body during aerobic exercise could cause an input impedance variation of the radiator within near-field range. This variation results in a corresponding change in the oscillation frequency and this change has been utilized for the sensing of human vital signs. In addition, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter and power detector have been used to increase the system sensitivity and to transform the frequency variation into a voltage waveform. The experimental results show that the proposed sensor placed 20 mm away from a human body can detect the vital signs very accurately.

  • This paper describes the variations of geomagnetic field by analyzing the geomagnetic observation data, which spanned the period from 1918 through 1944 and the global geomagnetic model in Korea. Geomagnetic data observed at Incheon in the period of 1918~1944 and global geomagnetic model (IGRF-95) were obtained from the World Geomagnetic Data Center. In this study, the variations of geomagnetic declination is estimated as $1^\circ{50'}$ from 1918 to 2000 and the variation rate is given as the nearest 1'20"/yr. The total variation of inclination is about 38' for 82 years and the variation rate is estimated as the nearest 27"/yr."/yr.;/yr.

  • This paper proposed a simple and helpful analysis model of voltage variation in order to predict the voltage variation at PCC (Point of Common Coupling), when a wind turbine is connected in an isolated grid. The PCC voltage flucuates when the wind turbine outputs active power to an isolated grid. This voltage variation is proportional to the product of the line impedance from the ideal generator to the PCC and the wind turbine output current. And It is different according as where wind turbine is connected. To solve the problem of voltage variation, this paper proposed the reactive power control. To verify the proposed analysis model, this paper utilized PSCAD/EMTDC Simulation and the field measurement data of the voltage variation during the wind power generation.

  • In this study, the spatial variation mechanisms of large far-field earthquakes at engineering scales are first investigated with data from the 2008 Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake. And a novel 'coherency cut-off frequency' is proposed to distinguish the spatial variations in ground motions in the low-frequency and high-frequency ranges. Then, a practical piecewise coherency model is developed to estimate and characterize the spatial variation in earthquake ground motions, including the effects of source-to-site distances, site conditions and neighboring topography on these variations. Four particular earthquake records from dense seismograph arrays are used to investigate values of the coherency cut-off frequency for different source-to-site distances. On the basis of this analysis, the model is established to simulate the spatial variations, whose parameters are suitable for both near- and far-field earthquake conditions. Simulations are conducted to validate the proposed model and method. The results show that compared to the existing models, the proposed model provides an effective method for simulating the spatial correlations of ground motions at local sites with known source-to-site distances.

  • Field-effect transistor (FET)-based ion or biosensors have been intensively studied so far. Among many measurement methods, the variation of the drain current can be induced when ions or biomolecules are interacted with sensing membranes located on the gate insulator of FET. One of typical FET-type sensors is an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) utilized in this study. In ISFET, the voltage is usually applied to the reference electrode instead of the gate voltage. Firstly, the voltage applied to the reference electrode versus the drain current was observed, and the steepest slope in this graph was found. Using this point, the optimized condition was established for the larger variation of the drain current in the saturated region in response to the variation of the input in the dynamic range.
