Studies were performed on evaluating the applicability of activated carbon bugs on dye tracer tests as tracer detectors by using its adsorption isotherm of the grained activated carbon. We preliminary conducted several standard adsorption and extraction tests and obtained the relationship between standard dye solution and detected concentrations from activated carbon samples in dry and wet conditions. the slopes of the regression line were 0.71 for wet condition and 0.74 for dried one. Field dye tracer tests were performed in a karst area, where several faults occur along a stream and pass the test area. We sampled water samples and activated carbon samples at three points in Hwangji Pond, where groundwater outflows from the karst conduit. According to the results of breakthrough curve analysis, the regional flow along the conduit, which is assumed to cause a karst conduit, was estimated as 0.18 m/day. The relationship between the concentrations of water sample and extracted activated carbon bugs shows the similar slopes with those from standard solution tests. This suggests that activated carbon could be useful as a dye tracer detector because the extraced concentration can be quantified.

Great concerns on geotechnical risk & hazard assessment have been increased due to human and economic damage by natural disasters with recent global climate changes. In this paper, geotechnical problems in particular, landslides which is interested in European countries and North America, were mainly discussed. For these, 18 key topics on geotechnical risk and hazards which had been discussed at the LARAM 2008 workshop in Italy were analyzed after grouping by subjects. Main topic contents consisted of applications such as field measurement, early warning systems, uncertainty analysis of parameters using radar, optical data and statistical theory and so on. And the problems related to analysis of vulnerability and deformation due to earthquakes, investigation of gas zone using seismic reflection data in a landslide area, risk quantification and hazard assessment of landslide movements and multi-dimensional analysis for stability of complex slopes were attracted. Also, there were studies on risk matters of cultural heritage, the blockglide of clayey ground, simulations of debris flows based on GIS, quantification of the failure processes of rock slopes, a meshless method for 3D crack modelling, and finally risk assessment for cryological processes due to global warming.
Several sensor systems are used to estimate the reinforceing effect of pile in hihg cut slopes, and to find a failure zone in slopes effectively. Inclinometer, extensometer and V/W sensor have shown a great potentiality to serve real time health monitoring of the slope structures. They were embedded or attached to the structures, we conducted field tests and test results have shown great solutions for sensor systems of Civil Engineering Smart Structures. This research is to seek for the relationships among the slope movement and the reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution in a active
zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure zone should be well defined based on the relationships. Also, the relationships between temperature and reinforceing effect of pile, and the strain distribution are estimated in this paper.

During the last few decades in Korea, the development of hillside or mountain areas has rapidly increased for infrastructure construction such as railroads, highways and housing. Many landslides have occurred during these constructions. Also, the amount and scale of damage caused by landslides have increased every year. In the case of Far East Asia including Korea, the damage of landslides is consequently reported during the wet season. In this paper, the effect of stabilizing piles on slope stability is checked and the behavior of slope soil and piles are observed throughout the year by field measurements in the large-scale cut slopes. In particular a large-scale cut slope situated on the construction site for the express highway in Donghae, Korea. First of all, The behavior of the slope soil was measured by inclinometers during slope modification. Landslides occurred in this area due to the soil cutting for slope modification. The horizontal deformations of slope soil gradually increased and rapidly decreased at depth of sliding surface indicating that the depth of sliding surface below the ground surface can be predicted. On the basis of being able to predict the depth of the sliding surface, stabilizing piles were designed and constructed in this slope. To ensure the stability of the reinforced slope using stabilizing piles, an instrumentation system was installed. The maximum deflection of piles is measured at the pile head and it is noted that the piles deform like deflection on a cantilever beam. The maximum bending stress of piles is measured at the soil layer. The pile above the soil layer is subjected to lateral earth pressure due to driving force of the slope, while pile below soil layer is subjected to subgrade reaction against pile deflection. As a result of research, the effect and applicability of stabilizing piles in large-scale cut slopes could be confirmed sufficiently.
The maintenance, repair, and reinforcement projects and structural stability assessments of Seokguram have primarily focused on examining the condition of stone members of Seokguram and the concrete dome structure for Seokguram. However, a 12 m-high rock slope located behind Seokguram raises a concern of slope failure and rockfall, which may reduce stability of Seokguram. It is also unclear whether the soil slopes and masonry wall at the side and the front of Seokguram have sufficient long-term stability against localized heavy rains and earthquakes, which have been frequent in recent years. The present study investigates the ground and the slopes around Seokguram using detailed field survey to identify geographical and geological risk factors, and assess structural stability of the exposed rock mass behind and the slope in front of Seokguram and the masonry wall using stability analysis.

In this paper a sensitivity analysis about effects of influencing factors on the stability of soil cut and embankment slopes in field was performed. Slope stability analysis of slopes in field was carried out with dry, rainy and seismic conditions. As results of analyzing the sensitivity of factors for the dry and rainy conditions, effect of cohesion, internal friction angle and unit weight of soil on the stability of cut slope is more critical in the dry condition than in the rainy condition. However, their effects on the stability of embankment slope for both conditions are similar to each other. The horizontal seismic coefficient does also affect the stability within the similar range of values irrespective of dry or rainy conditions. Cohesion and internal friction angle are more dominant factors influencing the slope stability irrespective of dry or rainy conditions than unit weight of soil and the horizontal seismic coefficient.
Several sensor systems are used to estimate the reinforcing effect of stabilizing pile in slopes, and to find a failure surface in slopes effectively. FBG(Fiber Brags Crating) sensor, V/W(Vibrating Wire) sensor and inclinometer have shown a great potentiality to serve real time health monitoring of the reinforcing structures. Field tests and test results have shown great solutions for sensor systems of Smart Structures. The purpose of this research is to seek for the relationships among the slope movement and the reinforcing effect of stabilizing pile, and the strain distribution of stabilizing pile in a active zone by analyzing the data from the in-situ measurement so that the possible failure surface should be well defined based on the relationships. The field test results have shown that the data by FBG sensor are well coincided with those of V/W sensor and inclinometer, and the reinforcing effect of the stabilizing pile is good enough.

In Korea, more than 70% of the territory consists of mountains. Therefore, the construction of roads and railways has generally involved with a steep rock slope in which the event of rockfalls are often occurred due to the weathered rock conditions and rainfalls etc. This is dangerous when the rock falls into the road and railway on which vehicles and trains are running. In order to prevent such rockfalls, the rockfall protection fence consisting of post, wire rope, and PVC coating steel net has most used at the bottom of rock slopes. In a general practice, an absorbing rockfall energy, 50kJ is specified by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. However, questions still remain about whether the rockfall protection fence works effectively or not. In this study, a typical wire rope used in the standard rockfall protection fence was replaced by the high carbon steel wire rod and to validate its capacity of rockfall energy absorbing the field rockfall tests were conducted. The testing results show that a new rockfall protection fence using the high carbon steel wire rods can absorb the rockfall energy more than 50kJ and 20% of construction cost was saved in comparison with the previous rockfall protection fence.
We present N-body simulations of globular clusters including gravitational field of the Galaxy, in order to study effects of tidal field systematically on the shape of outer parts of globular clusters using NBODY6. The Galaxy is assumed to be composed of central bulge and outer halo. We mvestigate the cluster of multi-mass models with a power-law initial mass function (IMF) starting with different initial masses, initial number of particles, different slopes of the IMF and different orbits of the cluster. We have examined the general evolution of the clusters, the shape of outer parts of the clusters, density profiles and the direction of tidal tails. The density profiles appear to become somewhat shallower just outside the tidal boundary consistent with some observed data. The position angle of the tidal tall depends on the location in the Galaxy as well as the direction of the motion of. clusters. We found that the clusters become more elongated at the apogalacticon than at the pengalacticon. The tidal tails may be used to trace the orbital paths of globular clusters.

In this study, slope hazards mitigation methods for a natural terrain are systematically classified to survey the mitigation methods and develop a data base system. Also, field survey sheets which can be recorded the features of mitigation methods installed in the natural slope are developed. The slope hazards mitigation methods in the natural slope are classified as hillside part method and valley part method. The slope part sheet and the valley part sheet are also drawn up for field survey. As the result of the filed survey of mitigation methods about 50 points in Muju and Jangsu area, grass painting and slope covering methods are dominant in case of slopes part. In case of valley part, slit dam, concrete check dam and slope foot barrier are applied simultaneously.
