The effects of the crystallographic orientation and sample thickness on the magnetic levitation forces (F) and trapped magnetic field (B) of single grain YBCO bulk superconductors were examined. Single grain YBCO samples with a (001), (110) or (100) surface were used as the test samples. The samples used for the force-distance (F-d) measurement were cooled at 77 K without a magnetic field (zero field cooling, ZFC), whereas the samples used for the B measurement were cooled under the external magnetic field of a Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet (field cooling, FC). It was found that F and B of the (001) surface were higher than those of the (110) or (100) surface, which is attributed to the higher critical current density ($J_c$) of the (001) surface. For the (001) samples with t=5-18 mm, the maximum magnetic levitation forces ($F_{max}s$) of the ZFC samples were larger than 40 N. About 80% of the applied magnetic field was trapped in the FC samples. However, the F and B decreased rapidly as t decreased below 5 mm. There exists a critical sample thickness (t=5 mm for the experimental condition of this study) for maintaining the large levitation/trapping properties, which is dependent on the material properties and magnitude of the external magnetic fields.
Polyethylene is widely used as the insulator for power cable. To investigate the conduction mechanism for power cable insulation under ac high field, it is very important to acquire the dissipation current under actual running field. Recently, we have developed the unique system, which make possible to observe the nonlinear dissipation current waveform. In this system, to observe the nonlinear properties with high accuracy, capacitive current component is canceled by using inverse capacitive current signal instead of using the bridge circuit for canceling it. We have already reported that the dissipation currents of $40\;{\mu}m$ thick LDPE film at 10 kV/mm and over 140 Hz, it starts to show nonlinearity and odd number's harmonics were getting large. To investigate the conduction mechanis ms in this region, especially space charge effect, various kinds of estimation, such as time variations of instantaneous resistivity for one cycle, FFT spectra of dissipation current waveforms and so on, has been examined. As the results of these estimations, it was found that the dissipation current will depend on not only the instantaneous value of electric field but also the time differential of applied electric field due to taking a balance between applied field and internal field. Furthermore, two large peaks of dissipation current for each half cycle were observed under certain condition. In this paper, to clarify the reason why it shows two peaks for each half cycle, the film thickness dependences of dissipation current waveforms were observed by using the three different thickness LDPE films.
Due to droughts and water shortages causing severe damage to crops and other vegetations, much attention has been given to efficient irrigation for upland farming. However, little information has been known to measure soil moisture levels in a field scale and apply their spatial variability for proper irrigation scheduling. This study aimed to characterize the spatial variability and temporal stability of soil water contents at depths of 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm on flat (loamy soil) and hill-slope fields (silt-loamy soil). Field monitoring of soil moisture contents was used for variogram analysis using GS+ software. Kriging produced from the structural parameters of variogram was applied for the means of spatial prediction. The overall results showed that the surface soil moisture presented a strong spatial dependence at the sampling time and space in the field scale. The coefficient variation (CV) of soil moisture was within 7.0~31.3 % in a flat field and 8.3~39.4 % in a hill-slope field, which was noticeable in the dry season rather than the rainy season. The drought assessment analysis showed that only one day (Dec. 21st) was determined as dry (20.4 % and 24.5 % for flat and hill-slope fields, respectively). In contrary to a hill-slope field where the full irrigation was necessary, the centralized irrigation scheme was appeared to be more effective for a flat field based on the spatial variability of soil moisture contents. The findings of this study clearly showed that the geostatistical analysis of soil moisture contents greatly contributes to proper irrigation scheduling for water-efficient irrigation with maximal crop productivity and environmental benefits.
The polarization gratings were fabricated in chalcogenide $As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin film applicable to a medium of the polarization holography and their diffraction efficiencies$(\eta)$ were monitored by real-time measurement. The polarization gratings prepared consisted of the multi-layer thin film system. As a method to improve the $\eta$, we have investigated its change for the field effect. As the results, the value of $\eta$ strongly depended on the voltage applied to the film and the maximum value, $\eta_{max}$ was enhanced to be about 4 times in comparison with that of not biased sample. In addition, an increase in the $\eta$ can be estimated to be due to additional creation of new defects caused by the electric field across the film.
Sample size effect on ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in polycrystalline MgFe2O4 has been investigated. The signal intensity (SI), resonance field (Hres) and line width (ΔH) were found to increase proportionally to r3 with the increase of sample radius. The r3-depencence of SI means the complete penetration of rf-field into the sample, and the broadening of ΔH due to the sample size appears to be closely related to the amount of scattering sources like pores. Meanwhile, the values of Hres (0) and ΔH (0) obtained by extrapolating the data of Hres (r) and ΔH (r) measured at several sizes to r=0, were in good agreement with those calculated using the Schlomann's equations for internal field and ΔH, respectively. This result indicates that the discrepancy between the measured FMR parameters and those calculated by Schlomann's equation could be ascribed to the effect of sample size. Thus it is suggested that the size effect on FMR should be removed for the analysis of the FMR parameters. Meanwhile, our result for the size dependance of ΔH was found to be contradictory to those reported by Dionne, where ΔH 1/r at a given surface roughness. This discrepancy appears to arise from the difference in the definition of reading the line width.
Polarization and strain induced by unipolar electric field (P\ulcorner, S\ulcorner), those induced by bipolar electric field (P, S) and remanent polarization (P\ulcorner) were investigated in 0.9Pb(Mg\ulcornerNb\ulcorner)O$_3$-$0.1PbTiO_3$relaxor ferroelectric ceramics in the temperature range of $-50^{\circ}C$~$90^{\circ}C$. From the temperature dependence of polarization and strain, the transition from predominantly paraelectric (electrostrictive) to partially ferroelectric (piezoelectric) is visualized. Under the given temperature, the P\ulcorner/P\ulcorner is always larger than the S\ulcorner/S\ulcorner and the difference between them becomes larger ass the temperature decrease. The S\ulcorner/P\ulcorner increases as the temperature decreased below phase transition temperature. It was suggested that these experimental results might be explained with a simple rigid ion model concentrating on BO\ulcorner octahedron.

In this paper, the variable tendency piezoelectric constant and resonance characteristics piezoelectric ceramics due to the electric field is studied. The practical application of piezoelectric ceramics is not only applied in field of small signal. For example, in case of an ultrasonic motor, $120{\sim}130Vrms$ of driving voltage is needed and that of an piezoelectric pump, $200{\sim}220Vrms$ of voltage is required. Therefore, to examine the characteristics of piezoelectric ceramics in large signal contributes to reducing the susceptibility to the multifarious application and securing the ease of the production of control circuit. These contributions may be connected to the expansion of industrial application. We fabricated disk-type piezoelectric ceramic samples by using conventional method and measured the resonance characteristics of these samples under from low to high voltage driving conditions. According to increasing the value of the input voltage, we measured the resonance frequency of the piezoelectric ceramic, and inquired into the cause of these phenomena.

We observed leveling-off of the resistance in granular In/InO$_x$ thin films in the zero-temperature limit. The temperature T$_b$ at which the leveling-off appears gets larger as the sheet resistance R$_n$ increases. This is consistent with the concept that the leveling-off of the resistance is due to the dissipation of the bosonic phase and that the dissipation is enhanced as the resistance increases. The magnetic field dependence of the saturated resistance R$_b$ at low temperatures fits the modified square-root cusp-like form R$_b$/R$_n$=α exp[-b(B/B$_c$-1)$^{-1/2}$] for the magnetic field in the range B$_c$$_f$ where B$_c$ is the onset magnetic field of the resistance leveling-off. α and b are constants of order 1. For B>B$_f$ tansport properties are described by the theory of the fermi insulator. From the results, we attribute the leveling-off to the dissipative quantum tunneling of vortices, which supports the models predicting the vortex-motion-induced insulating phase related with the concept like"dirty boson" [1]l and "hose metal" [2].

We studied the electrical characteristics of pentacene-based organic field-effect transistors (FETs) with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or poly-4-vinylphenol (PVP) as the gate insulator. PMMA or PVP was spin-coated on the indium tin oxide glass substrate that serves as gate electrodes. The source-drain current dependence on the gate voltage shows the FET characteristics of the hole accumulation type. The transistor with PVP shows a higher field-effect mobility of 0.14 $cm^{2}/Vs$ compared with 0.045 $cm^{2}/Vs$ for the transistor with PMMA. The atomic force microscope (AFM) images indicate that the grain size of the pentacene on PVP is larger than that on PMMA. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for the pentacene deposited on PVP exhibit a new Bragg reflection at $19.5{\pm}0.2^{\circ}$, which is absent for the pentacene on PMMA. This peak corresponds to the flat-lying pentacene molecules with less intermolecular spacing.
Residual stresses were predicted by a flow analysis in the mold cavity and residual stress distribution in the injection molded product was measured. Flow field was analyzed by the hybrid FEM/FDM method, using the Hele Shaw approximation. The Modified Cross model was used to determine the dependence of the viscosity on the temperature and the shear rate. The specific volume of the polymer melt which varies with the pressure and temperature fields was calculated by the Tait\`s state equation. Flow analysis results such as pressure, temperature, and the location of the liquid-solid interface were used as the input of the stress analysis. In order to calculate more accurate gap-wise temperature field, a coordinate transformation technique was used. The residual stress distribution in the gap-wise temperature field, a coordinate transformation technique was used. The residual stress distribution in the gap-wise direction was predicted in two cases, the free quenching, under the assumption that the shrinkage of the injection molded product occurs within the mold cavity and that the solid polymer is elastic. Effects of the initial flow rate, packing pressure, and mold temperature on the residual stress distribution was discussed. Experimental results were also obtained by the layer removal method for molded polypropylene.
