  • A technique to control the operating frequency of microstrip antenna by using the X-cut quartz substrate has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. We consider 6, 8 and 10 GHz resonance frequency in three dimensional quartz plates. Equation of linear piezoelectricity are solved for the thickness-shear approximation of X-cut quartz plates. At X-band frequencies, the microstrip antenna was voltage-controllable using the dc electric field dependence of the piezoelectric constant of X-cut quartz. This work demonstrates advantageous application for X-cut quartz plate in microstrip antenna substrates.

  • We describe recent observations and measurements realized with microdot (MDOT) detectors having 50 mm, 100 mm, and 200 mm pitches for 3.7 keV X-rays. A gas gain of $3.1{\times}10^3$ has been measured with 50 mm pitch MDOT at potential difference much lower than those usually obtained with MSGCs. The defocusing effect caused by the existence of the readout lines passing below the insulator layer has been investigated from the drift voltage dependence of the count rate variation and the electric field simulation for all the detectors. Results concerning the spatial resolutions are presented with collimated X-ray beams.

  • Everyone wishes to live a happy life. Unfortunately, however, most people who have grown up in dysfunctional families grow up living wounded inner child' .This wounded inner child not only experiences conflicts in interpersonal relations but also exchanges wounds with others, which inflicts pain on them. Besides, they suffer from dependence and addiction, leading them to have miserable lives. This study seeks to review the definitions of the inner child and treatment methods using movies for the wounded inner child. The study found that as a field of art therapy, cinema therapy can have a positive effect on curing the emotionally wounded inner child.

  • Expansion dynamics of C$^{+}$ ions ejected from 355-nm laser ablation of graphite target in vacuum has been investigated by pulsed-field time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. A strong nonlinear dependence of the amount of desorbed C$^{+}$ ions on laser fluence is interpreted by the mechanism that C$^{+}$ ions are produced directly from the graphite via conversion of the multiphoton energy into thermal energy. The temporal evolution of C$^{+}$ ions was measured by varying the delay time of the ion repelling pulse with respect to the laser irradiation, which provides significant information on the ablated plume characterization. The TOF distributions of ablated ions showed a bimodal shape and could be fitted by shifted Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions. The velocity of the fast component increases with the delay time, whereas the slow component (< 500 m/s) exhibits a constant velocity. Also studied were the effects of the laser fluence on the energetics of C$^{+}$ ions.

  • Dynamic analysis of nano/micro bio-sensors based on a multiscale atomistic/continuum theory is introduced. We use a generalized atomistic finite element method (GAFEM) to analyze a bio-sensor which has $3{\times}N_a{\times}N_p$ degrees of freedom, where $N_p$ is the number of representative unit cells and $N_a$ is the number of atoms per unit cell. The stiffness matrix is derived from interatomic potential between pairs of atoms. This work contains two studies: (1) the resonance analysis of nano bio-sensors with different amount of target analyte and (2) the dependence of resonance frequency on finite element mesh. We also examine the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition based on the highest resonance frequency. The CFL condition is the criterion for the time step used in the dynamic analysis by GAFEM. Our studies can be utilized to predict the performance of micro/nano bio-sensors from atomistic perspective.

  • The water wave characteristics of Bragg reflections from a train of fixed floating pontoon breakwaters was studied numerically. A numerical model of boundary discretization type was developed to calculate the wave field. The model was verified by comparing to analytical data in literature and good agreements were achieved. Series of parametric studies were conducted systematically to investigate the dependence of the reflected coefficients by the Bragg scattering on the design variables, including the spacing between the breakwaters, the total number of installed breakwaters, the draft and width do the breakwater, and wave length. Certain wave characteristics of the Bragg reflections were observed and discussed in details which might be of help for practical engineering applications in shoreline protection from incident waves.

  • We have investigated the activation magnetic moment, which characterizes the basic magnetic moment acting as a single magnetic particle during magnetization reversal. The activation magnetic moment was measured from each local area on continuous ferromagnetic thin films, by analyzing the magnetic field dependence of magnetization reversal of the corresponding local area, based on a thermally activated relaxation process. It was found that the activation magnetic moment was nonuniform on a submicrometer scale; the fluctuation increased with increasing the number of layers in Co/Pd multilayers. The distribution could be well described by exp($\delta m^{3/2}$), where $\delta$m is the deviation of the activation magnetic moment from the mean value.

  • Electromagnetic actuators are versatile and able to meet demanding requirements, such as operation in very low or very high temperatures. When the actuator is used in a high-temperature environment up to $500^{\circ}C$, we need to know how the force-producing capability of the actuator is affected by the operating temperature. Specifically, it is necessary to know the temperature-dependence of magnetic properties that determine the mechanical forces. In this paper, we measure the changes in magnetic properties of SUS410 material in high-temperature environment. We also devise a novel signal processing technique to remove the integration drift. At the field strength of 18,000 A/m, we found that the flux density at $500^{\circ}C$ is decreased by 26%, compared to the result at room temperature. Therefore, the actuator must be sized appropriately, if it is to operate in high-temperature settings.

  • In this series, we investigate the calculation of mean values of derivatives of Dirichlet L-functions in function fields using the analogue of the approximate functional equation and the Riemann Hypothesis for curves over finite fields. The present paper generalizes the results obtained in the first paper. For µ ≥ 1 an integer, we compute the mean value of the µ-th derivative of quadratic Dirichlet L-functions over the rational function field. We obtain the full polynomial in the asymptotic formulae for these mean values where we can see the arithmetic dependence of the lower order terms that appears in the asymptotic expansion.
