There has been fast progress in economy in Korea derived by a consecutive five-year plan program for economic development started in the early 1960's. In the field of transportation, rapid changes in the technological environment of transportation and communication have brought a revolution of the transport system, of which inter-modal transportation through containerisation is typical. Because of the rapidly growing traffic volumes of cargo, especially container traffic, and lack of investment into transport infrastructure in the past, both road and railway are beyond their capacity. As a result, the public-road network has suffered a serious congestion problem. For instance, in relation to the corridor between Seoul and Pusan, today, it takes about 14 hours for the journey of container trailer through Kyongbu Expressway, for which it used to take only 7 hours in 1986. For the railway, though the congestion problem is not very serious compared with the road sector, a shortage of capacity on certain main lines has emerged as a problem as railway traffic has increased. Furthermore, the further expansion of the system in near future is difficult due to burden of higher construction the cost. Unlike these two modes, coastal shipping, which has been paid relatively less attention for commodity transport in Korea, shows no constraint in this respect. In addition, it is the most cost efficient mode of transport. This work therefore aims to make a proposal for the alternative inland transportation mode, which is to promote the coastal transport of container. Three obstructing factors for the promotion of the coastal transport are investigated and some solutions for those are suggested as follows : First, it appears to be essential to provide exclusive ports for the coastal shipping, that comply with simplification, specialization and rationalization. The optimum size of berths on the exclusive ports in Pusan port is estimated as 16-20. We found that it needs periodical study and publicity on the advantages from the adoption of the coastal mode. Inducing competition in the coastal shipping market is also necessary. For the supply of the fleet in the coastal shipping, chartering of the surplus ships in the oversea shipping is found to be more desirable than new shipbuilding. Second, to solve the fragmentation of the companies which wish to participate in the coastal transport, government has to implement the subsidy policy. The encouragement of participation of the shipping lines engaging in Korea-Japan run and Korea-East South Asia run, into coastal shipping also needs to be considered cautiously. Third, simplification of the document for entry in ports is needed for rational coastal shipping management. We can use B/L (Bill of Lading) for coastal shipping as a prerequisite to get the indemnity by P & I Club. The reduction of the government controls on entering and leaving the ports also needs.
Researches on resources recycling in the field of construction have made an extensive progress such as recycled aggregate of waste concrete and recycling of asphalt. On the other hand, there are almost never researches on pavement method with used waste frying oil. In South Korea, 0.2 million ton used waste frying oil is discharged every year. It is guessed that about 0.1 million ton used waste frying oil can be collected. If used waste frying oil is recycled, it is expected that disuse cost will be reduced and water pollution of rivers will be prevented. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to evaluate on mechanical features (strength, water resistance, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, freezing and thawing resistance and permeable coefficient) whether dense graded permeable concrete mixing silica sand with flexible alkyd resin manufactured by making ester reaction with collected used waste frying oil to make alkyd resin could be applied to road pavement for non-roadway. The results of the study were as follows. In flexural strength, it had 1.6 times as much as road design standard 4.5MPa. In water resistance, chemistry resistance and freezing and thawing resistance, they had lack of strength in early age. As age went by, they didn't have large changes. And curing temperature had phenomenon of increase in strength at rather low temperature than high temperature by glass transition temperature of resin. Therefore, considering workability, strength and durability when it was applied to road pavement, it was reasonable that the mixing ratio of flexible alkyd resin was 10~15% in comparison with silica sand weight.
As the interest in hydrogen energy is being increased, it is a widely issue to develop a lot of hydrogen technologies in the field of production, storage, transportation, application and others. In the aftermath, there is a hydrogen town in Ul San, which is expected to expand application fields of hydrogen energy, as a demonstration project. The hydrogen town in Ul San can consist of high and low pressure part by the gas pressure. The high pressure part is managed by 'the high pressure gas safety control act'. And, low pressure part is managed by 'the guideline for the safety management of demonstration project of hydrogen town'. In this paper, to improve efficiency of safety management, the direction of safety management is reviewed by an analysis of low pressure hydrogen facility and safety management items. And then, some improvement directions are suggested. In the end, it is expected that the results of this study could help to activate construction of hydrogen town and improve efficiency of safety management as well.
Current initial rock stress state is one of the key factors required to evaluate the stability and failure around an excavated opening and its importance increases as the construction depth become deeper and the scale of the rock structure become larger. In this paper, the study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of the regional stress state at Chuncheon-Yanggu mountainous region, the East-North part of Kyeonggi Massif. Forty nine field stress measurements in 9 boreholes were conducted at the depth from 20 m to 290 m by hydraulic fracturing method. The fracturing tracing works were carried out by acoustic televiewer scanning. The study results revealed that the different intial rock stress states presented at different formation rock type and the excessive horizontal stress state with stress ratio(K) close to 3.0 was measured at the depth of 200 m and deeper in the intrusive unite body of the study area. The results from the investigation of excessive horizontal stress and its effect on failure mode showed that there exist several points where the localized excessive horizontal stresses are big enough to potentially induce brittle failures around the future openings greater than 100 m in depth within the granite body of the study area.

A front-end loader (FEL) mounted on an agricultural tractor is one of the most commonly used implements to mechanize routine agricultural tasks. When the FEL is used with a loaded bucket, careful operation is required to maintain safety and avoid spillage when the tractor passes a bump because a change in the gravity center of the tractor due to varied loadings can affect the stability of the tractor. Use of a boom suspension system consisting of accumulators and orifice dampers can be instrumental in reducing pitching vibrations while increasing the handling performance of the FEL-mounted tractor. The objective of this research was to reduce bump shocks by adding an orifice and a flow control valve to the original hydraulic circuit composed solely of accumulators. A simulation study was performed using the SimulationX program to investigate the effects of an accumulator and an orifice-throttle damper on bump shocks. Results showed that the peak pressure on a boom cylinder and the vertical acceleration of a bucket were significantly affected by use of both an accumulator and an orifice damper. In a field test conducted with a 75-kW tractor, the peak pressure of the boom cylinder, and the root mean square (RMS) vertical acceleration of the bucket and seat were reduced by on average, 23.0, 42.2, and 44.9% respectively, as compared to those measured with the original accumulator system, showing that an improved design for the accumulator hydraulic circuit can reduce bump shocks. Further studies are needed to design a tractor suspension system that includes the effects of cabin suspension and tires as well as dynamic analysis.
This study analyzed degree of disturbance, using specimens by laboratory test with large block specimens and piston samplers collected from the Korea's two typical soft ground districts: South coast Gwangyang and Yangsan. To assess the characteristics of compression index of laboratory test incurred by disturbance, the compression index of laboratory test was compared with the back analysis compression index resulting from the analysis of the measured settlement. The analysis of specimen disturbance of the laboratory test results with the piston specimens of the two districts found that the qualities of most specimens were poor and the settlement predicted by the laboratory test compression index was underestimated. The analysis of test material taken from nearby areas proved that the disturbance degrees of large block specimens were lower than that of the piston specimens. The hyperbolic method, Hoshino method, Asaoka method, and ${\sqrt{S}}$ method, all of which are predictive methods using measured settlement, were employed to reach a conclusion that reliabilities of each predictive method except predictive material of a few points were the same. To compensate the disturbance effects on compression index of the piston specimens, we suggested a new modification formula that estimates compression index of piston specimens, using Schmertmann's corrected compression index, and back analysis compression index from the analysis of predictive settlement.

Recently P2P (Peer-to-Peer) networks and applications have been expanded to various field. However, because the construction of P2P network did not influence a underlying network topology or property, it may be inefficient. Especially, this inefficiency is more serious in MANET because MANET has narrow bandwidth and energy constraint. When we use a proactive routing protocol in MANET, we can know hop counts between two nodes. And, we can construct a P2P overlay network using this hop count information. However, In case of using hop count only, we can avoid a interference path selection problem and a zig-zag problem. We propose a method of improving P2P contents distribution using virtual positions. We calculate virtual positions from hop counts using the trigonometry. This method solves a interference path selection problem and a zig-zag problem. This method also allows a P2P network to influence underlying network topology. We adopt this method to a network which uses a virtual geographic routing, a proactive routing protocol, or a reactive routing protocol. We show that our proposed methods improve P2P contents distribution performance over MANET through a simulation.
Many e-learning programs in Korea use lecture as a main instructional method. A meta-analysis study reports that e-learning programs using lectures were the most ineffective. In addition, many researchers in the field of distance education contend that the active participation of learners is the key to the success of e-learning. These imply why we can easily find many people who don't have good impression about e-learning. The quality of e-learning depends on the application of appropriate pedagogy. This study aims to present the implications for the improvement of e-learning programs in the Republic of Korea by analyzing the psychological characteristics reflected on the e-learning programs in the U. S. that have been improved through design research for a long time. The result shows that the e-learning programs in the U. S. have five major psychological aspects, i.e., reflective thinking, collaborative interaction, knowledge construction, situated action, and utilizing multiple representations. Consequently, this study suggests that e-learning programs in the Republic of Korea need to reflect learning principles such as learning by doing, situated learning, collaborative learning, learning with multiple representations in order to improve the quality.
As part of the digital era, a digital twin that simulates the weak part of a product by performing a stress test that reduces the lifespan of some expensive equipment that cannot be done in reality by accurately moving the real world to virtual reality is being actively used in the manufacturing industry. Due to the development of IoT, the digital twin, which accurately collects data collected from the real world and makes it the same in the virtual space, is mutually beneficial through accurate prediction of urban life problems such as traffic, disaster, housing, quarantine, energy, environment, and aging. Based on its action, it is positioned as a necessary tool for smart city construction. Although digital twin is widely applied to the manufacturing field, this study proposes a smart city model suitable for the 4th industrial revolution era by using it to smart cities and increasing citizens' safety, welfare, and convenience through the proposed model. In addition, when a digital twin is applied to a smart city, it is expected that more accurate prediction and analysis will be possible by real-time synchronization between the real and virtual by maintaining realism and immediacy through real-time interaction.
This article explores how to incorporate the topic of the global environmental crisis called the "anthropocene" into archives studies and connect it to ecological practical reasons. In order to encourage discussion of archival studies, which puts the environmental crisis at a kind of archive constant value, this study seeks to examine the possibility of a quality shift in archival studies based on ecology. This article aims to go beyond the pragmatism of preparing improvements to eco-friendly record management, which is recently claimed by the "Green Archive" in Western archival studies. It calls for a new concept called 'ecological archive', which theoretically combines a more archives-based and ecological paradigm, and its epistemological transformation. Specifically, the ecological approach of archives is first discovered in the discussion of archival studies and at the same time, through the "ecological turn" of archives emphasized by recent anthropocene discourses, the concept of "ecological archive" emphasized by this article is embodied. This study uses 'ecological archive' as a universal and theoretical framework for archives as a basic concept for building ecological 'living' archives. In other words, for the construction of ecological archives, we reinterpret and extend so-called democratic values for archives, i.e., post-custodianship, community archives, and archives of emotions. Finally, the records of foot-and-mouth disease killing burial sites, an important site and example of the anthropocene tragedy, exemplifies the methodology of the actual application of ecological living archives. The case analysis aims to seek a new qualitative shift in record management that adapts to global ecological transformation, while also emphasizing the documentation by archival activism in ecological field practices jointly organized by archivists and citizens.
