  • Optimal range of soil physical quality to enhance crop productivity or to improve environmental health is still in dispute for the upland soil. We hypothesized that the optimal range might be established by comparing soil physical parameters and their interactions inhibiting crop growth. The parameter identifying optimal range covered favorable conditions of aeration, permeability and root extension. To establish soil physical standard two experiments were conducted as follows; 1) investigating interactions of bulk density and aeration porosity in the laboratory test and 2) determining effects of soil compaction and deep & conventional tillage on physical properties and crop growth in the field test. The crops were Perilla frutescens, Zea mays L., Solanum tuberosum L. and Secale cereael. The saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density from the root depth, root growth and stem length were obtained. Higher bulk density showed lower aeration porosity and hydraulic conductivity, and finer texture had lower threshold bulk density at 10% aeration bulk density. Reduced crop growth by subsoil compaction was higher in silt clay loam compared to other textures. Loam soil had better physical improvement in deep rotary tillage plot. Combined with results of the present studies, the soil physical quality was possibly assessed by bulk density index. Threshold subsoil bulk density as the upper value were $1.55Mg\;m^{-3}$ in sandy loam, $1.50Mg\;m^{-3}$ in loam and $1.45Mg\;m^{-3}$ in silty clay loam for optimal soil physical quality in upland.

  • In order to assess the quality and depth of ground densification by compaction, SPT and/or CPT are performed before and after compaction. Both methods are intrusive and one point tests, require a substantial time to evaluate a large area, and their results are quite dependent on the operation technique and soil type. In this paper, the quality and extent of ground densification by compaction was evaluated by using in situ SASW test and laboratory resonant column (RC) test results. SASW test was used to determine the shear wave velocity profiles before and after compaction, and RC test was adopted to determine the correlation between the normalized shear wave velocity and the density of the site, which is almost uniquely independent of confinement. Testing and data reduction procedures of both tests were discussed, and a simplified evaluation procedure of ground densification was proposed. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by performing field study at Inchon International Airport Project. Field densities determined by the proposed method matched well with those determined by sand cone tests.

  • The 19 mm-sized aggregate was produced by melting vinyl waste (waste polyethylene film) generated from vinyl greenhouses in rural areas. It was mixed with As'cone at various weight ratios, and then insulation effect test, tension test after repeated freezing and thawing, ice pull-out strength test and field density test were conducted for the mixtures. These results demonstrated that as the mixing ratio of polyethylene aggregate increased, the insulation effect increased, due to the many pore spaces that existed in the polyethylene aggregate. After repeatedly freezing and thawing As'cone, the tensile strength significantly increased at 2.5% of the polyethylene aggregate content rather than 0% of polyethylene aggregate content but it also slightly decreased at 5% and 10% of polyethylene aggregate content in comparison to 2.5% of its polyethylene aggregate content. As'cone added with polyethylene aggregate by 2.5% resulted in lower ice pull-out strength than that of normal As'cone. As a result of the porosity test for the samples taken at the site, porosity of the As'cone, which added polyethylene aggregate, was smaller than that of the general As'cone.

  • The quality control of compaction fills has been commonly performed via the field density measurement and plate load tests. However, the engineer frequently encounters difficulties in actually controling the quality due to the uncertainty in the field density measurement as well as the plate load tests. To overcome these difficulties, Park et al. (2009) proposed an alternative quality control method based on the measurement of the compressive wave velocities. In this study, the compressive wave velocities measured in the full-scale model test site were analyzed. Direct arrive seismic tests were performed after the completion of each trackbed layer. To identify a relationship between elastic wave velocities and degree of compaction, laboratory compaction tests were conducted.

  • PFA(Paper Fly Ash) are reclaimed mainly or used in cement industry field as mixture agent in terms of materials recycling. Recently, research for recycling PFA as embankment materials or soil stabilization agent are undergoing in geotechnical engineering field. In this study, physical characteristics of PFA stabilization agent-soil admixtures are examined in change of water content, void ratio, consistency, grain distribution, specific gravity and density. Futhermore, the physical characteristics are compared with unconfined strength as engineering characteristics. Test results showed that unconfined strength and density are increased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. On the other hand, specific gravity, void ratio and water content are decreased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. It would be concluded that natural high water content ratio weak soil could be highly improved engineering and physical characteristics with PFA stabilization agent

  • Loss in the multi-stacked HTS wires are affected by a number of factor, such as, number of wires used in the stack, direction of external magnetic field and insulation thickness between the wire. This paper examines the effects of the insulation thickness on the magnetization loss of the multi-stacked YBCO coated conductor. Measurements of magnetization loss were performed using 4 different typo of multi-stacked wires and under various angle of external magnetic field. Test results show that loss density per unit volume increased for YBCO coated conductors when thickness of insulation increased. Loss density per unit volume decreased for YBCO coaled conductors when stacking number of tapes increased.

  • Much attention has been given recently to solve the environmental contamination in golf courses Changing to culture practice rather than chemical practice that depends on pesticides and fertilizers is a hot issue in golf courses or grasslands. Organic soil conditioners improve soil-plant envirormental conditions rich in physical properties. In this study, measuring systems to evaluate soil conditioning effects were set up for on-site purpose. After establishing the methodology for evaluating soil conditioner effects, 2 kinds of organic conditioners were rested for examination. The systems for the methodology included a set of simulating equipment for field capacity, an impact type soil column compactor, and an infiltration-percolation system. Test results using the systems showed bulk density and infiltration rate of mixed soil were decreased at highter rates of conditioner, but total porocities were increased. Increased porocities were most capillary pore space which has a positive effect on soil water potential. The systems and methodology in this study seem to have an efficiency to measure the effects of soil conditioner on site purpose.

  • Magnetization loss of HTS wire is strongly dependent on the critical current density and the aspect ration of the HTS wire. This paper presents the magnetization loss of stacked BSCCO wire and stacked YBCO wires which had different critical current densities. Width of the BSCCO wire was 4mm and widths of two YBCO wires were 4mm and 8mm. Single wire, two stacked three stacked and four stacked wires were fabricated and tested. Ratio of magnetization loss of BSCCO wire to YBCO wire was presented at single wire. For stacked wire, ratio of magnetization loss of single wire to stacked wire was presented. Test results shows that magnetization losses of stacked wires were greater than that of single wire at large high magnetic field above critical magnetic field.

  • Although various fast and simple, testing devices have been developed in many countries such as the U.S, Japan, and European countries, these testing devices are not commonly used in Korea. In this study, compaction fur the field density test was carried out with a hand-guided vibrating roller. The results of the field density test were compared with those of the new testing devices such as the geogauge, soil impact hammer(CASPFOL), light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD), dynamic cone penetration(DCP). Regression analyses were conducted with the data from new testing devices. The analysis results showed that the correlation coefficients were high in the range of $70{\sim}95%$.

  • The objective of this study was to compare the resolution and density appropriate to diagnosis in chest PA radiography. In comparing the resolution, we radiographed with conventional radiography, computed radiography(CR) and digital radiography(DR) using the linear resolution phantom(Nuclear Associates-Carle Place. N.Y.). 2 radiologists and 3 radiological technologists read the resolution value by the blind test. DR, conventional radiography and CR measured 3.95, 3.58, 3.48 resolution value respectively. In analysing the density, we chose the fifty normal chest CR and DR and conventional film. We estimated the density using by densitometer(X-rite company-Model 301) in seven regions(lung field, lung field margine, mediastinum I, mediastinum II, heart shadow I, heart shadow II, diaphragm) of chest film. We adapted to analysis the Japanese chest X-ray evaluating method and table. It was scored 0(farthest density value) to 2(nearest density value). DR scored 2 at mediastinum I, mediastinum II, heart shadow I, heart shadow II and diaphragm. On the contrary with, CR scored 2 at lung field and lung field margine. Consequently, DR superior than CR and conventional radiography film compairing density and resolution. It was due to small pixel size and post processing algorithm with digital radiography.
