  • In this study, we investigated identification of anti-oxidative constituents from Ficus erecta var. sieboldii King (F. erecta) leaves. DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activities were screened for the ethanol extract and solvent fractions, and ethyl acetate fraction showed the most potent scavenging activities. Five constituents were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of F. erecta leaves; monoolein (1), oleic acid (2), lutein (3), afzelechin (4), catechin (5). The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on the spectroscopic data including NMR spectra, as well as comparison of the data to the literature values. As far as we know, all of the compounds 1 ~ 5 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Studies on DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activities were conducted for the isolated compounds. Among them, afzelechin (4) and catechin (5) showed strong DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activities, whose activities were comparable to a positive control vitamin C. Also, the content of catechin isolated from this plant was determined by HPLC and it was about 3.8 mg/g for the 70% ethanol extract and 20.8 mg/g for the ethyl acetate fraction. From these results, F. erecta leaves extract could be potentially applicable as anti-oxidant ingredients in cosmetic industries.

  • In this study, a preliminary evaluation of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the Ficus erecta var. sieboldii (Miq.) King (FES) leaf extract has been performed to assess its potential as a natural resource for food and medicinal materials. FES was extracted using 70% EtOH and then fractionated sequentially using n-hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc, and n-BuOH. To screen for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents effectively, the inhibitory effect of the FES extracts on the production of oxidant stresses (DPPH, xanthine oxidase, and superoxide) and pro-inflammatory factors (NO, iNOS, COX-2, $PGE_2$, IL-6, and $IL-1{\beta}$) in the murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was examined. Among the sequential solvent fractions of FES, the $CH_2Cl_2$ and EtOAc fractions showed decreased production of oxidant stresses (DPPH, xanthine oxidase and superoxide), and the hexane and $CH_2Cl_2$ fractions of FES inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory factors (NO, iNOS, COX-2, and $PGE_2$). The $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction also inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, and $IL-1{\beta}$). These results suggest that FES has a significant effects on the production of oxidant stresses and pro-inflammatory factors and may be used a natural resource for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents.

  • The vegetation of Odongdo island was surveyed over twenty-nine times from April, 1982 to August, 1983. This island is located at 127。46'05'∼127。39'37'E. longitude and 34。40'20'∼34。48'14'N. latitude. The vegetation of this island consisted of 94 families, 261 genera, 314 species, 53 varieties and 6 formae. And among them were 170 species of woody plants and 203 species of herbs. The community of evergreen broad-leaved trees comprised a total of 44 species including Sasa coreana Nakai and camellia japonica L. and the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees was good in this island as a whole. Sasa coreana Nakai, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii Nakai, Ficus erecta Thunb., Ficus nipponica Fr. et Sav, Stauntonia hexaphylla (Thunb.) Decne, Cinnamomum japonicum Sieb., Machilus thunbergii S. et Z., Lozoste lancifolia (S. et Z.) Bl., Ilex intergra Thunb., Camellia japonica Thunb., Hedera rhombea Bean and Ardisia japonica Bl. etc. in this island were autochthonous flora and their preservation is required.

  • Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for evergreen broad-leaved forest in Hongdo. Forty-nine plots were classified into six groups, which are Camellea japonica community, Machilus thunbergii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii-Machilus thunbergii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboidii-Camellea japonica community and evergreen broad-leaved mixed community by the DCA ordiantion and TWINSPAN techniques. Successional sere of the forest vegetation in the surveyed area were proceeding from Pinus densiflora through Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieholdii to Neolitsea sericea, Dendropanax morbifera, Machilus japonica, Quercus acuta and Mahilus thunbergii in the canopy layer group and from Ligustrum japonicum, Ardisia japonica. Eurya japonica. Rhaphiolepsis umbellata through Trachelosperum asiaticum, Kadsura japonica. Litsia Japonica, Camellea japonica to Aucuba japonica, Euscaphis japonica, Ficus erecta in the understory and shrub layer group.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant components and activities of HR02/04(8:2)-W, a mixture of S. quelpaertensis Nakai and F. erecta var. sieboldii. We investigated the p-coumaric acid, total flavonoid, and total phenol contents. To evaluate the antioxidant efficacy, we measured the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, FRAP activity, reducing power, and ORAC value. We observed the protective effect of hydrogen peroxide against cell damage in human dermal fibroblasts. As a result of the experiment, the p-coumaric acid, total flavonoid, and total phenol contents were 75.62±1.56 mg/100 g, 21.57±0.84 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g, and 21.25±1.31 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g, respectively. In the experiments on antioxidant activity, HR02/04(8:2)-W was found to have significantly increased antioxidant activity. In the human dermal fibroblasts, the HR02/04(8:2)-W treated groups could effectively protect cells against oxidative damage. In this study, we confirmed that HR02/04(8:2)-W is a material with effective physiological antioxidant activity.

  • This paper contains the results obtained by ecological investigation of flora in Sogumoon Island of the southern coast in Korea. Fifty varieties, 455 species, 322 genera and 104 family of Tracheophyta were recorded island showed a plant community predcominated by Pinus thunbergii grwon in miggle with Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Litsea japonica, Albizzia julibrissin, Carpinus coreana, Carpinus laxiflora, Mallotus japonica and Clerodendron trichotomum. Sixtythree species in Sogumoon Island and 64 species in Pogil Island of evergreen broad-leaved trees were recorded by this investitgations. The plant resources of this island were 203 species. The evergreen broad-leaved trees of this island wre valuable for landscaping material plants and the evergreenherbs were valuable for foliage-plants resources. The flora breaking in this island was due to cuttinf for fuel and grazing cattle and goats. Therefore Machilus thunbergii, Ardisia japonica, Ficus miponica, Kadsura japonica, Daphniphyllum macropodum, etc. should be preserved. Autochonous flora of Buxus microphyllac, Fius erecta, Machilus thunbergii, Kadsura japonica, Ardisia japonica, Mitchella undulata, etc. should be preserved.
