  • Background: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare, sporadic, and benign congenital condition in which normal cancellous bone is replaced by fibro-osseous tissue with immature osteogenesis. FD localized in the cranial and facial bones is called craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD). Cystic degeneration in CFD cases is rare; cystic degeneration appearing in both the maxilla and the mandible FD lesion is even rarer. The aim of this article was to report a case of fibrous dysplasia of the mandible and maxilla complicated by nonspecific cystic degeneration. Case presentation: A 30-year-old woman presented with a rare case of non-specific cystic degeneration in a mandible and maxilla FD lesion that occurred 11 years after surgery. She was diagnosed with polyostotic CFD and underwent maxillary and mandibular bone contouring. Cyst enucleation under general anesthesia was performed in the mandibular region due to pain and discomfort. Conclusions: In cases involving non-aggressive and non-invasive FD cystic degeneration in focal areas, conservative treatment is recommended. However, if cystic degeneration of FD develops rapidly and causes discomfort, pain, or dysfunction, surgical treatment should be considered.

  • This study compared the biological characteristics, nymphal development, adult longevity, and oviposition of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg, in fibrous nylon and glass-tube in the insectary at $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 16L:8D of photoperiod. Nymphal duration in the fibrous nylon-tube was 1 day longer than in the glass tube; the difference was attributed to the developmental duration of the fifth instar. Percent emergence in the fibrous nylon-tube was $64\%,\;8\%$ higher than in the glass tube ($56\%$). In the fibrous nylon-tube, adult longevities for female and male were 4.1 times and 6.0 times higher than those in the glass tube. Preoviposition period was 1 day longer in the fibrous nylon-tube than that in the glass tube. The total number of eggs laid was 3.5 times more in the fibrous nylon-tube than in the glass tube. The oviposition duration lasted about 30 days for the bean bug in the fibrous nylon-tube and about 8 days for those in the glass. Accordingly, the fibrous nylon-tube was found more conducive than the glass tube for determining the biology of bean bug.

  • Fibrous dysplasia is believed to be a hamartomatous developmental lesion of unknown origin. This disease is divided into monostotic and polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. Polyostotic type can be divided into craniofacial type, Lichtenstein-Jaffe type, and McCune-Albright syndrome. In this case, a 31-year-old female presented spontaneous loss of right mandibular teeth before 5 years and has shown continuous expansion of right mandibular alveolus. Through the radiographic view, the coarse pattern of the mixed radiopaque-lucent lesion was seen on the right mandibular body, and there was diffuse pattern of the mixed radiopaque-lucent lesion with ill-defined margin in the left mandibular body. In the right calvarium, the lesion had cotton-wool appearance. Partial excision for contouring, multiple extraction, and alveoloplasty were accomplished under general anesthesia for supportive treatment. Finally we could conclude this case was polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of cranio-maxillofacial area based on the clinical, radiologic finding, and histopathologic examination.

  • Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the spermatic cord represents an uncommon location for the most common soft tissue tumor in adults. MFH of the spermatic cord is extremely rare. No case report has been described in the Korean literature. We report a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, myxoid type, arising from left spermatic cord. A 77-year-old male presented with a painless left upper scrotal mass for 5 months. Simple mass excision was performed for a diagnosis. Grossly, the mass closely contacted with the left spermatic cord. Since a myxoid type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma was diagnosed from histopathological findings, left radical orchiectomy with high ligation of the spermatic cord was performed additionally. There were no evidence of local recurrence or metastasis at 6 months after surgery.

  • Fibrous dysplasia of the mandible is an unusual manifestation of the disease that is usually benign, occurs in young individuals, and is managed by conservative curettage or debridement. We present a case of persistent fibrous dysplasia complicated by pain and abscess formation that was successfully managed by radical resection and reconstruction with a free fibular flap. Although mandibular fibrous dysplasia is preferentially managed conservatively, treatment of this disease has evolved to a point where total excision and immediate reconstruction may be the treatment of choice and offer the best outcome.

  • Fibrous dysplasia is a chronic developmental disease of the skeleton involving formation of immature bone. Involvement of facial bones can result in deformation of facial contour. Prominent cheek area is often treated with malarplasty, which has a variety of modifications, depending on the surgeon's preference. The authors report on a case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia in which the patient's right cheek had a prominent appearance. The prominence was corrected with malarplasty without internal fixation. The soft nature of bone involved in fibrous dysplasia could provide greater flexibility for modification of the traditional surgery.

  • Shrinkage crack is a major concern for cement materials, especially for flat structures such as Korean On-Dol floor system, flooring for garages, and wall. One of the methods to reduce the adverse effects of shrinkage cracking is to reinforce cement materials with shot randomly distributed fibers. The efficiency of inorganic fibrous material to arresting cracks in cementitious composites was studied. Cement materials reinforced with five different qualities of inorganic fibrous material were tested. Contents of inorganic fibrous material were 1.0 kg, 1.5 kg, 2.0 kg, 2.5 kg, 3.0 kg by weight of cement mortar and C : S types of cement mortar were 1:3 and 1:4. W/C were 60% and 80%. Cement mortar of inorganic fibrous material reinforcement showed an ability to reduce the crack width and crack length significantly as compared to unreinforced cement mortar. $40%{\sim}60%$ drop in shrinkage crack of 1:4 cement mortar with 1.5 kg over was observed.

  • Solitary fibrous tumor on the pleura is rare but should be included in the differential diagnosis on a peripheral pulmonary nodule. Cytologic features of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is not familar to the pathologist and may be misdiagnosed as malignancy. We report fine needle aspiration cytologic(FNAC) findings of a case of solitary fibrous tumor misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma in a 48-year-old woman. The FNAC displayed a mixture of bland-looking spindle cells and clusters of epithelioid cells, which have hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli. The helpful finding to distinguish It from other circumscribed benign and malignant lesions is the presence of fibromyxoid matrix admixed with blood vessels and thin collagen fibers. Familiarity with these features is essential to avoid misdiagnosis and overtreatment.

  • It is generally known that paper industry is the second largest industry in the use of process water, and also have the highest environmental impact load in the contaminant sources. Paper is produced from the mixtures composed of 1% fibrous raw materials and 99% water. The optimum use of process water effects on the quality properties of paper and the environmental impact load of waste water treatment. In this research, the kinds of fibrous raw material & additives used in the paperboard production line were investigated, and the quantification of environmental loads and the environmental effects of process water on COD potential were evaluated. The NBDCODs were also analyzed from process water by the method of waste water treatment in paper mill and applied for the optimum use of recycling water, and zero effluent process. In the fibrous raw materials, KOCC caused the highest COD potentials, and sack paper & UKP was comparatively low. The NBDCOD of KOCC largely reduced after biological treatment because of easily biodegradable properties, but AOCC contained non-biodegradable materials. In chemical additives, COD was high in turns of rosin>starch>deaeration agent>dye, NBDCOD greatly reduced in starch and deaeration agent. In the case of 2 kinds of paperboard product, the COD potentials was mainly high in starch, AOCC and KOCC.
