  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode. • A new online multi-layer integrated routing (MLIR) scheme that combines IP (electrical) layer routing with WDM (optical) layer routing is investigated. It is a highly efficient and cost-effective routing scheme viable for the next generation integrated optical Internet. A new simplified weighted graph model for the integrated optical Internet consisted of optical routers with multi-granularity optical-electrical hybrid switching capability is firstly proposed. Then, based on the proposed graph model, we develop an online integrated routing scheme called differentiated weighted fair algorithm (DWFA) employing adaptive admission control (routing) strategies with the motivation of service/bandwidth differentiation, which can jointly solve multi-layer routing problem by simply applying the minimal weighted path computation algorithm. The major objective of DWFA is fourfold: 1) Quality of service (QoS) routing for traffic requests with various priorities; 2) blocking fairness for traffic requests with various bandwidth granularities; 3) adaptive routing according to the policy parameters from service provider; 4) lower computational complexity. Simulation results show that DWFA performs better than traditional overlay routing schemes such as optical-first-routing (OFR) and electrical-first-routing (EFR), in terms of traffic blocking ratio, traffic blocking fairness, average traffic logical hop counts, and global network resource utilization. It has been proved that the DWFA is a simple, comprehensive, and practical scheme of integrated routing in optical Internet for service providers.

  • We have investigated a novel optical decoder for a fiber-optic code division multiple access(CDMA) communication systems. The conventional optical encoder and decoder have the advantage of simple structure. However the number of users in the system is limited by the auto- and cross-correlation properties generated in decoding process. In previous studies, to improve the system performance, although they used an optical code that minimize the sidelobe and cross-correlation, could not yet find a novel methods for performance improvement in fiber-optic CDMA system. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the novel optical decode in order to improve the performance of system. In this paper, we schematize the AND gate logic element(AGLE) composed with 1$\times$2 or 1$\times$3 coupler and the optical thyristor and propose the novel optical decoder using K(weight) AGLE. The optical thyristor only passes the overlapped signal and clips other signals. Such a novel concept means that the optical thyristor can operate as a hard-limiter. We analyze the fiber-optic CDMA system using the novel optical decoder with simulation and is found that the novel optical decoder using the AGLE and optical thyristor excludes the sidelobe and cross-correlation intensity between any two sequences.

  • In this paper we study the effect of chaos in nonuniform instability with optical fiber based IoT networks. The transient response of optically controlled fiber has also described. Nonlinear optical fiber effects especially fiber scattering in networks has emerged as the essential means active optical devices. The paradigm instability in fiber Internet serves as a test for fundamental study of chaos and its suppression and exploitation in practical application in optical communication. This paper attempts to present a survey and some of our research findings on the nature of chaotic effect on Internet based optical communication. The transient response in optical fiber has been evaluated theoretically by calculating the variation of the scattering function. The lines has used under open ended termination containing optically induced region. The scattered optical waves in a fiber used in optic communications are temporally unstable above certain threshold intensity.

  • We propose 3-layered hierarchical fiber-optic backbone transmission network composed of B-DCS, Backbone ring, Edge ring for efficient transmission of high capacity traffic and consider design method to ensure network survivability of each layer at affordable cost. Mathematical ring-construction cost minimization using MIP(Mixed Integer Programming) models results in NP-complete problem. So, it is hard to solve it within reasonable computing time. on a large-scale network. Therefore we develop heuristic algorithms solving WSCAP(Working and Spared Channel Assignment Problem) for B-DCS, MRLB(Multi-Ring Load Balancing) problem for Backbone ring, and ORLB(Overlayed Ring Load Balancing) problem for Edge ring and show their usefulness through case study.

  • Ferrule is widely used as fiber optic connecters. In fiber-optic communications. the shape accuracy such as coaxiality and cylindricity of ferrule affects insertion loss. When coaxial grinding of ferrule supported by two pin. pin alignment and chucking accuracy are very important. In this research, the kinematic behavior of the ferrule centers are investigated in the case where the ferrule is chucked with the cone-shaped center pins and bail centers, With homogeneous coordinate transformation and numerical analysis, the obtained results are as follows: In the case of cone-type center, the alignment errors between center pins alone do not affect the rotation accuracy of ferrule. The alignment errors between center holes cause sinusoidal displacement of ferrule. And the maximum displacement of ferrule centers is proportional to the center pin angle. In the case of ball-type center, the displacements of ferrule centers has similar pattern as cone-type center, and the alignment errors art proportional to ball diameters.

  • Considering survivability in fiber-optic transmission networks using B-DCS(Broadband Digital Cross-connect System), a network design problem consists of WCAP(Working Channel Assignment Problem) and SCAP(Spare Channel Assignment Problem). WCAP has not been studied intensively as a part of a network design problem to minimize total network cost while SCAP has been studied in the several papers as an independent problem. In this study, we developed a WSCAP(Working and Spare Channel Assignment Problem) algorithm which is to minimize the total number of spare channels and working channels. After problem description, an IP(Integer Programming) model is formulated and several heuristic algorithms are presented. Finally, the result of a case study is described.

  • A receiver ASIC for fiber optic modules of STM-1 optical communication has been fabricated with 0.65 $\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology. The ASIC has a limit amplifier circuit for the 155.52 Mbps data reshaping, and a clock extraction circuit for the 155.52 MHz clock recovery. The ASIC has an acquisition aid and LOS monitoring circuit for properly operation with near 155.52 MHz clock frequency in case of the data loss due to transmission line open or data transfer fail. Measured results show that the circuit reshapes data from 5 mV to 1 V wide range of input voltage condition, add it recovers system clock with stable on any condition.

  • Optical networks are composed of various enabling technologies, merged in harmony to produce high-speed, reliable and affordable communications backbones. Optical communications has evolved out of the necessity for a transmission medium with increased bandwidth capacity. The evolution of fiber optic data communications has stemmed from the telecommunications industry's need to multiplex voice channels for interconnecting call distribution center.
