  • Retention of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of polymer composites at cryogenic temperature application is very important. In this work, single carbon tiber reinforced epoxy compositc was used to evaluate IFSS and apparent modulus under room and cryogenic temperatures. The property change of carbon and selected epoxy for particularly cryogenic temperature application were tested in tension and compression. Tensile strength and elongation of carbon fiber decreased at cryogenic temperature, whereas tensile modulus was almost same. On the other hand, epoxy matrix showed the increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. It can be due to maximum thermal contraction existing free volume in cryogenic temperature. IFSS increased up to $-10^{\circ}C$ and then decreased steadily. However, IFSS at cryogenic temperature was still similar to that at room temperature. This result is very useful to cryogenic application since selected epoxy toughness and interfacial adhesion can keep at such low temperature.

  • This paper presents the application of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the damage absorption and optimal design of portable smart devices to close in life. CFRP specimens are subjected to a tensile test to estimate their mechanical properties in terms of the stacking angles. Further, the screw reverse torque and screw torque at each stacking angle are determined using a torque tester after tapping holes on the CFRP specimens. Two experiments are performed for comparing their results in order to determine optimal conditions. In the tensile test, a woven specimen is found to have the highest strength and stiffness. In the case of the woven specimen, no difference is observed even when it is applied to prevent loosening of the coating. And average result value was excellent.

  • Advanced fiber-reinforced laminated composites are widely used in various fields of engineering to reduce weight. The material property of each ply is well known; specifically, it is known that ply is less reliable than metallic materials and very sensitive to the loading direction. Therefore, it is important to consider this uncertainty in the design of laminated composites. In this study, reliability analysis is conducted using COMSOL and MATLAB interactions for a laminated composite plate for the case in which the tip deflection is the design requirement and the material property is a random variable. Furthermore, the efficiency and accuracy of the approximation method is identified, and a probabilistic sensitivity analysis is conducted. As a result, we can prove the applicability of the advanced design method for the stabilizer of an underwater vehicle.

  • Effect of graphite powder addition on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (C/C composites) was investigated. Greenbody (G/B) with 0~30wt.% graphite powder addition to phenol resin was prepared and carbonized at $1000^{\circ}C$ to make C/C composites. Flexural strengths of 20wt.% graphite powder additions showed maximum values in the both case of G/B and C/C composites. But, at the graphite addition over 20wt.%, there was negative effect due to the matrix inhomogeneity. Flexural strength of cured resin without graphite Powder was higher than that with graphite. However, flexural strength of carbonized resin with graphite increased three times as much as that of carbonized resin without graphite. Because the addition of graphite powder effects the restraint of shrinkage after carbonization and the deflection of crack path. In Mode II ENF test, energy release rates($G_{II}$) of G/B and C/C composites with the 20w1.% addition of graphite were both increased. But, the addition of graphite was more effective to the increase of $G_{II}$ in C/C composites than that in G/B.

  • The ultrasonic atomic force microscope(UAFM) has been developed in order to enhance the characterization technology for nano-scale surface combining ultrasonic property to atomic force microscope. This UAFM technique enables elasticity imaging due to the physical properties on the heterogeneous surface in addition to the novel topography of surface height in the nano-surface layer. In this study, the prototype UAFM system was constructed and applied to several materials, silicon deposited wafer, spherodized cold heading steel, and carbon fiber reinforced plastic specimen. Clear elastic contrast was successfully obtained using this developed prototype UAFM.

  • In this study, the effects of ring stiffeners for buckling of cylindrical shells with composite materials were analyzed. The finite element method was used: 3-D beam elements were used for stiffeners and flat shell elements were used for cylindrical shells and were improved by introducing a substitute shear strain. The ring stiffeners were of the transverse rib type. The buckling behaviors of the cylindrical shells were analyzed based on various parameters, such as locations and sizes of stiffeners, diameter/length ratios and boundary conditions of shells, and fiber-reinforced angles. Effective reinforcement was examined by understanding the exact behaviors for buckling. The results of the analysis may serve as references for designs and future investigations.

  • The time to ignition, heat release rate characteristics, and carbon monoxide yield of fiber reinforced and sandwich phenol resin were investigated with cone calorimeter. The fire characteristics of unsaturated polyester, mostly being applied to the existing passenger train, and phenolic resin were compared. DSC & TGA was used to monitor the degree of thermal decomposition and weight loss for the phenolic resin. According to the cone calorimeter data, the time to ignition was shorter, heat release rate, and CO yield was higher as the external heat flux increased. Under the same heat flux, the time to ignition of sandwich type phenolic resin was shorter than that of laminated. The result of comparison between unsaturated polyester and phenolic resin was that phenolic resin was shown to have better fire resistance than unsaturated polyester.

  • Pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (PFRP) and FRP member manufactured by sheet molding compound (SMC) have superior mechanical and physical properties compared with those of conventional structural materials. Since FRP has an excellent corrosion-resistance and high specific strength and stiffness, the FRP material may be highly appreciated for the development of floating-type photovoltaic (PV) power generation system. In this paper, advanced floating PV generation system made of PFRP and SMC is designed. In the design, it includes tracking solar altitude by tilting photovoltaic arrays and tracking solar azimuth by spinning structures. Moreover, the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) are presented to confirm stability of entire structure under the external loads. Additionally, installation procedure and mooring systems in the Hap-Cheon Dam are discussed and the measurement of strain under the actual circumstances is conducted for assuring stability of actually installed structures. Finally, by comparison with allowable stress, appropriate safety of structure is confirmed to operate the system.

  • In this study, CFRP and metal or nonmetal were bonded with adhesive and the fracture study on this material was carried out. CFRP at the upper side of specimen and metal or nonmetal were assigned at the lower side of specimen by using DCB specimen as the analysis condition. And it was desribed that the structural adhesive were bonded between both upper and lower sides. As this analysis result, the least equivalent stress was shown at the specimen bonded with aluminium. The maximum shear stress was shown to become lowest at the de-bonded CFRP specimen when titanium was used. In conclusion, it was shown that the deformation of specimen became lowest when titanium was used. On the basis of this study result, the esthetic sense can be shown as the fracture data of bonded interface using adhesive are grafted onto the real life.

  • Recent development of core techniques the IT electronics industry can condense into lightweight and slimmer. In this circumstance, researches for the lightweight materials and subminiature screw have been attracted. In this study, the CFRP was produced by stacking angle to obtain the tensile properties. And Comparing the coated screws and non-coated screws on the specimen, and evaluating the adequacy for the application of CFRP using the result. So The clamping force measured by comparison evaluation. Low screw reverse and Superior torque value at each stacking angle were found the optimum conditions, when Subminiature Screw is applied on smart devices. Both tensile strength and stiffness of $[{\pm}0^{\circ}]_{10}$ is the highest. Followed by $[90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{10}$ is the highest. The largest clamping torque is $[90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{10}$ When Subminiature Screw is applied coating and non-coating to prevent loosening. Based on the above, Subminiature Screw should be applied in smart devices, because $[90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{10}$ meet both tensile properties and clamping force.
