Highly-Birefringent Photonic Crystal Fiber (Hi-Bi PCF) is composed of a single material, silica, so that its temperature sensitivity is extremely low. Therefore, we propose afiber based Sagnac interferometer for measurement of strain and curvature independent of temperature variation. The sensitivities of strain and curvature (both axes) are measured to be $1.41\;pm/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and $0.93nm/m^{-1}$(slow axis Y), $-1.6\;nm/m^{-1}$(fast axis X), respectively.
We proposed an integrated wavelength-selective photodetector based on a grating-assisted contradirectional coupler and a graphene absorption layer for a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) communication system. The center wavelength of the absorption spectrum of the proposed device can be tuned simply by changing the period of the grating, and the proposed device structure is suitable to forming a cascaded structure. Therefore, an array of the proposed device of different grating periods can be used for simultaneous wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection in a CWDM communication system. Our theoretical study showed that the designed device with a grating length of $500{\mu}m$ could have an absorption of 95.1%, an insertion loss of 0.2 dB, and a 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 nm, resulting in a -14 dB crosstalk to adjacent CWDM channels. We believe that the proposed device array can provide a compact and economic solution to receiver implementation in the CWDM system by combining functions of wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection.
WDM thin film filters for fiber optical communication were designed using Fabry-Prot type multiple cavity filters and an equivalent thin film technique. As the number of cavities in multiple cavity filters increases, it becomes difficult to design the filters due to a great number of variables (the number of cavities, period of reflectors, order of spacers). To solve the problem of design, we treated the fewest variables, regarding symmetrical thin films as equivalent layers, and we applied structural and numerical formulas based on an analysis method of multiple cavity filters. The equivalent thin film technique was able to provide systematic and quantitative design of the WDM thin film filters.
Dielectric thin film mirrors are embedded in multimode and single-mode fibers by a fusion splicing technique. The fibers with $45{\circ}$ angled embedded mirrors serve as ultra-compact directional couplers with low excess optical loss of 0.2 dB for multimode and 0.5 dB for single mode at 1.3 ${\mu}m$ and excellent mechanical properties. The reflectance is wavelength dependent and strongly polarization depencient. Far-field scans of the reflected output power measured with a white-light source show a pattern which is almost circularly symmetric with aspect ratio of 1.09 at 5% of the peak power. The splitting ratio in a multimode coupler measured with a diode laser source is much less dependent on input coupling conditions than in conventional fused biconical-taper couplers, indicating that these couplers are less susceptible to modal noise occuring in optical fiber communication systems. Spectral properties of multilayer internal mirrors normal to the fiber axis have been investigated experimentally, and a matrix analysis has been used to explain the results.
The fiber Raman amplifier(FRA) is a distinctly advantageous technology. Due to its wider, flexible gain bandwidth, and intrinsically lower noise characteristics, FRA has become an indispensable technology of today. Various FRA modeling methods, with different levels of convergence speed and accuracy, have been proposed in order to gain valuable insights for the FRA dynamics and optimum design before real implementation. Still, all these approaches share the common platform of coupled ordinary differential equations(ODE) for the Raman equation set that must be solved along the long length of fiber propagation axis. The ODE platform has classically set the bar for achievable convergence speed, resulting exhaustive calculation efforts. In this work, we propose an alternative, highly efficient framework for FRA analysis. In treating the Raman gain as the perturbation factor in an adiabatic process, we achieved implementation of the algorithm by deriving a recursive relation for the integrals of power inside fiber with the effective length and by constructing a matrix formalism for the solution of the given FRA problem. Finally, by adiabatically turning on the Raman process in the fiber as increasing the order of iterations, the FRA solution can be obtained along the iteration axis for the whole length of fiber rather than along the fiber propagation axis, enabling faster convergence speed, at the equivalent accuracy achievable with the methods based on coupled ODEs. Performance comparison in all co-, counter-, bi-directionally pumped multi-channel FRA shows more than 102 times faster with the convergence speed of the Average power method at the same level of accuracy(relative deviation < 0.03dB).
We designed and fabricated the single mode fiber pigtailed DFB-LD module for 2.5 Gbps optical communication system. In the design of the DFB-LD module, we made the module divided into two parts of inner sub-module and outer 14-pin butterfly package and cylindrical shaped sub-module contain quasi confocal 2 lens system including optical isolator and electrical connection between these parts via hybrid substrate of bias T circuit. Laser welding was used to assemble the sub-module which requires accurate fixing between optical elements. The fabricated DFB-LD module showed optical coupling efficiency of 20% and - 3 dB small signal response of more than 2.6 GHz. We confirmed mechanical reliability of the module by temperature cycle test where the tested module exhibit optical power fluctuation of less than 10%. Finally we evaluated the performance of the fabricated DFB-LD module as light source of 2.5 Gbps optical communication system, sensitivity of - 30.2 dBm was obtained through 47 km optical fiber transmission under the criterion of $1\times10^{-10}$ BER and transmission penalties were 1.5 dB caused by extinction ratio and 1.0 dB caused by chromatic dispersion of normal single mode fiber. fiber.
The fiber optic receiver, ETRI APD-FET 1.0, is developed for the application of optical communication. This fiber optic receiver includes PD sub-module and pre-amplifier case. A single lens system is introduced for the PD sub-module. The sub-module consists of the avalenche photodiode(APD), GRIN rod lens, and a single mode fiber. The above components are enclosed into the stainless steel 304L housings. By bevelling the fiber end, the single mode fiber provides less than ~ 28 dB of optical return loss. The area of image focus is controlled by adjusting the length of spacer located in-between the fiber and the GRIN rod lens. The laser welding technique is applied to achieve the maximum coupling efficiency for the joining of each housing. In the pre-amplifier case, GaAs FET pre-amplifier workes for photocurrent amplification and the thermister is mounted to control the APD bias. The performance of ETRI APD-FET1.0 shows the sensitivity of - 30.3 dBm at $10^{-10}$ BER(bit error rate) and 2.5 Gbps optical random signal of $2^{23}-1$ word length. The fiber optic receiver is one of the essensial parts of the transmission module for B-ISDN. Also, the above optical packaging technology will be adapted for the developement of 10 Gbps transmission application 2.5 Gbps 5 Gbps
Fiber-Bragg-grating external cavity laser(FGL) modules were fabricated and experimentally analyzed. Proposed as a cost-effective solution for optical sources in the WDM-PON access network, FGL modules were packaged to TO-CAN type. We obtained a low threshold current of 13 mA, and an optical output power of 3.6 mW with a bias current of 60 mA at $25^{\circ}C$. The lasing wavelength dependencies on current and temperature were as small as 5.2 pm/mA and 30 pm/$^{\circ}C$, respectively. These change rates of the wavelength with the temperature and current are smaller than those of the DFB laser. Single-mode oscillations with the side-mode suppression ratio(SMSR) over 30 dB are maintained above the threshold current level. The FGL modules can be directly modulated at 155 Mbps, PRBS(2$^{23}$ -1) NRZ signal. Through the BER plots, we did not see the significant degradations before and after the transmission over 20km of the SMF at 155 Mb/s.
Performance of soliton based long-haul optical communication system with in-line optical amplifier repeaters are evaluated numerically. To reduce the optical amplifier noise, the amplifier gain is increased and the post amplifier loss is included. By theoretical calculation with 1480 nm co propagating pump, 7 dB amplifier gain and operating the amplifier 1 dB in compression, the spontaneous emission factor can be reduced from 2.37 to 1.45 by increasing the pump power from 3.71 to 11.53 mW and increasing the post amplifier loss from 0 to 10 dB. Then, power penalty can be reduced from 4.09 to 1.20 dB for 8,000'km transmission and the maximum transmission distance is 14,890 km. ,890 km.
This paper represents 50 ㎓ narrow band pass filters for fiber optical communication fabricated by dual ion beam sputtering method. We have analyzed the characteristics of the TA$_2$$O_{5}$ and $SiO_2$ single layers in order to optimize the process conditions for the 50 ㎓ narrow band pass filters, and controlled the film thickness uniformity to less than 0.1 nm deviation by dual peak spike filter pre-deposition. We designed and fabricated 50 ㎓ narrow band pass filters that consist of 216 layers including 4 cavities based on quarter wave optical thickness. Class substrates with high thermal expansion coefficients were used to reduce the film stress. Anti-reflection coating at the rear side of the substrate was also needed to reduce the optical thickness errors of the Optical Monitoring System caused by multiple beam interference between the front side and the rear side of substrate. The optical characteristics of this 50 ㎓ narrow band pass filters are insertion loss of 0.40 ㏈, pass band ripple of 0.20 ㏈, and pass bandwidth at -0.5 ㏈ of 0.20 nm. and isolation bandwidth at -25 ㏈ of 0.6 nm, which satisfy specifications of dense WDM system in fiber optical communications.tions.
