  • The main objectives of this paper are to demonstrate the feasibility of using newly developed smart GFRP reinforcements to effectively monitor reinforced concrete beams subjected to flexural and creep loads, and to develop non-linear numerical models to predict the behavior of these beams. The smart glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars are fabricated using a modified pultrusion process, which allows the simultaneous embeddement of Fabry-Perot fiber-optic sensors within them. Two beams are subjected to static and repeated loads (until failure), and a third one is under long-term investigation for assessment of its creep behavior. The accuracy and reliability of the strain readings from the embedded sensors are verified by comparison with corresponding readings from surface attached electrical strain gages. Nonlinear finite element modeling of the smart concrete beams is subsequently performed. These models are shown to be effective in predicting various parameters of interest such as crack patterns, failure loads, strains and stresses. The strain values computed by these numerical models agree well with corresponding readings from the embedded fiber-optic sensors.

  • Recently, fiber optic sensors, which have many advantages are being applied in various fields by replacing conventional electric sensors. To transmit the light signals between an interrogator and a sensor head, optical components such as an optical adaptor and optical jumper cords are generally used. When signals are transmitted using an adaptor, the end surface of each jumper cord is faced together. If alien substances exist on the core surface of an optical fiber, those can cause light transmission loss and signal disappearance. For this reason, non-contact fiber jumper cords are developed to overcome the problems that require continual attention. The light transmission performance of non-contact fiber jumper cords are also evaluated. From the test results, conventional fiber jumper cords are unable to transmit the signals over 2 mm cavity between the ends of both cords. Otherwise, non-contact fiber jumper cords can transmit the signals with stability up to the cavity of 7 mm though they have more transmission loss than the conventional ones. Consequently, non-contact fiber jumper cords that have better signal stability than conventional ones in environments are highly recommended in field applications, especially if they play a role as a cable for signal transmission between fiber optic sensors.

  • We demonstrated numerically that both the chromatic dispersion and the dispersion slope could be compensated by using purely phase-sampled superstructure fiber Bragg gratings provided with chirp of coupling coefficient along the wavelength axis. Also, we propose a purely phase-sampled Bragg grating for dispersion and dispersion slope compensation by introducing a chirp in coupling coefficient and sampling function. The bandwidth of all reflected channels can be equalized.

  • Erbium doped fiber (EDF) sources are useful devices for characterization of optical components for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) fiber optic communication system. Therefore, there are many efforts to extend the bandwidth and to increase the power of the light source. Especially, L-band ASE source uses the low inversion state of EDF. It makes the power efficiency very low and needs a lot of fiber as several times as the fiber needed in C-band ASE generation. (omitted)

  • As optical communication is being substituted for telecommunication, the demand of a large variety of fiber optic components is increasing. V-groove substrates, one of the module components, are used to connect optical fibers to optical planar circuits and to arrange fibers. Their applications are multi-channel optical connectors and optical waveguide fiber coupling, etc. Because these substrates are a critical part of the splitter in a multiplexer and a multi fiber connector, precise and reliable fabrication process is required. For precisely aligning core pitch between fibers, machined core pitch tolerance should be within sub-microns. Therefore, these are generally produced by state-of-the-art micro-fabrication like MEMS. However, most of the process equipment is very expensive. It is also difficult to change the process line for custom designs to meet specific requirements using various materials. For various design specifications such as different values of the V angle and low-priced process, the fabrication method should be flexible and low cost. To achieve this goal, we have suggested a miniaturized machine tool with high accuracy positioning system. Through this study, it is shown that this cutting process can be applied to produce V-groove subtracts. We also show the possibility of using a miniaturized machining system for producing small parts.

  • Electro Explosive Devices can be susceptible to electromagnetic interference. When these components are exposed to external electromagnetic fields, it may cause to induce sufficient current to generate enough heat for an inadvertent detonation. It is almost impossible to monitor the event of firing throughout the electromagnetic environment test. The survivability of EED for hazards of electromagnetic radiation is investigated. A fiber optic sensor is installed near the bridge wire after removing explosive material in order to measure the induced current on the bridge wire. The length of lead-wire of the EED fabricated is around 15 cm.

  • A new method for temperature compensation of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) using hi-metal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Bi-metal bends toward the metal of low temperature expansion coefficient as the temperature increases, and this property is utilized to cancel the thermo-optic effect of the fiber. The optimum thickness of the high coefficient metal was empirically found by the trial-and-error method. The temperature sensitivities were 8.1 pm/$^{\circ}C$ and -0.018 pm/$^{\circ}C$ for the uncompensated and compensated FBGs, respectively, which indicates a reduction to a mere 0.22 % of the original sensitivity. No appreciable change in the spectral shape was observed. The packaging technique described in this paper is simple and compact, and it can be used for FBGs in WDM and DWDM communication systems that have stringent requirements on the temperature stability of the components.

  • The fiber optic receiver, ETRI APD-FET 1.0, is developed for the application of optical communication. This fiber optic receiver includes PD sub-module and pre-amplifier case. A single lens system is introduced for the PD sub-module. The sub-module consists of the avalenche photodiode(APD), GRIN rod lens, and a single mode fiber. The above components are enclosed into the stainless steel 304L housings. By bevelling the fiber end, the single mode fiber provides less than ~ 28 dB of optical return loss. The area of image focus is controlled by adjusting the length of spacer located in-between the fiber and the GRIN rod lens. The laser welding technique is applied to achieve the maximum coupling efficiency for the joining of each housing. In the pre-amplifier case, GaAs FET pre-amplifier workes for photocurrent amplification and the thermister is mounted to control the APD bias. The performance of ETRI APD-FET1.0 shows the sensitivity of - 30.3 dBm at $10^{-10}$ BER(bit error rate) and 2.5 Gbps optical random signal of $2^{23}-1$ word length. The fiber optic receiver is one of the essensial parts of the transmission module for B-ISDN. Also, the above optical packaging technology will be adapted for the developement of 10 Gbps transmission application 2.5 Gbps 5 Gbps

  • During last years, large investments have been directed to development and research of nano-technological products like semiconductor, display panel, optic-fiber communication components, life technology, and ultra-precision components. All quantitative measurements at nanometre scale should guarantees accurate results and high quality. Laser interferometer is one of most famous nanometre scale devices to be able to measure metre-scale distance with nanometre scale resolution, but it is easily affected by various error causes like geometrical, instrumental and environmental factor. On the other side, capacitive sensor is robust to above error factors, but it is able to measure relatively shorter distance, under $100{\mu}m$, than laser interferometer. New error correction method for laser interferometry using capacitive sensor will be introduced in this paper.

  • In fiber optic networks, system size and cost can be significantly reduced by development of optical components through planar optical waveguides. One important step to realize the compact optical devices is to develop planar optical amplifier to compensate the losses in splitter or other components. Planar amplifier provides optical gain in devices less than tens of centimeters long, as opposed to fiber amplifiers with lengths of typically tens of meters. To achieve the same amount of gain between the planar and fiber optical amplifier, much higher Er doping levels responsible for the gain than in the fiber amplifier are required due to the reduced path length. These doping must be done without the loss of homogeniety to minimize Er ion-ion interactions which reduce gain by co-operative upconversion. Sol-gel process has become a feasible method to allow the incorporation of Er ion concentrations higher than conventional glass melting methods. In this work, Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$ $O_3$ films were prepared by two different method via sol -Eel process. Tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)/aluminum secondary butoxide [Al (OC$_4$ $H_{9}$)$_3$], methacryloxypropylcnethoxysaane(MPTS)/aluminum secondary butofde [Al(OC$_4$ $H_{9}$)$_3$] systems were used as starting materials for hosting Er ions. Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$ $O_3$ films obtahed after heat-treating, coatings on Si substrate were characterized by X-ray din action, FT-IR, and N-IR fluorescence spectroscopy. The luminescence properties for two different processing procedure will be compared and discussed from peak intensity and life time.
