  • Due to the trend of evolution toward a broadband communication network with fiber-optics, the design and operation of fiber-optic network have been received a great deal of research attention recently. Furthermore, even a single fiber link failure in the network may result in severe service loss. Thus, the network survivability becomes an importantissue in planning and designing the network. This survey is on modelling of various fiber-optic subscriber loop network(FSLN) design problems, which are essential ones for providing broadband communication services and B-ISDN services. Models are classified and investigated as either conventional decomposition-iteration approach or integrated design method. To build survivable networks, SHR models are also suggested by ring control schemes. The result of this study will be effectively applied to build a design model for FSLN in the practical applications.

  • Optical fiber is a kind of local loop types. Most of countries do not still require the incumbent to open his optical fiber network except just a few countries such as US, Japan and Italy. Recently the FCC, the regulator in US, decided to reduce the obligation of its unbundling in order to facilitate the incentive of broadband network investment. And Japan also is reviewing the policy of the fiber' unbundling. So, We needs to take into consideration about the benefit and cost of the opening of optical fiber network in advance. The purpose of this paper is to review the opening policy of optical fiber network in Japan, and to discuss the implication of case study.

  • This study investigated and predicted the Marshall stability of glass-fiber asphalt mix, carbon-fiber asphalt mix and glass-carbon-fiber asphalt (hybrid) mix by using machine learning techniques such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest(RF), The data was obtained from the experiments and the research articles. Assessment of results indicated that performance of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based model outperformed applied models in training and testing datasets with values of indices as; coefficient of correlation (CC) 0.8492 and 0.8234, mean absolute error (MAE) 2.0999 and 2.5408, root mean squared error (RMSE) 2.8541 and 3.3165, relative absolute error (RAE) 48.16% and 54.05%, relative squared error (RRSE) 53.14% and 57.39%, Willmott's index (WI) 0.7490 and 0.7011, Scattering index (SI) 0.4134 and 0.3702 and BIAS 0.3020 and 0.4300 for both training and testing stages respectively. The Taylor diagram also confirms that the ANN-based model outperforms the other models. Results of sensitivity analysis show that Carbon fiber has a major influence in predicting the Marshall stability. However, the carbon fiber (CF) followed by glass-carbon fiber (50GF:50CF) and the optimal combination CF + (50GF:50CF) are found to be most sensitive in predicting the Marshall stability of fibrous asphalt concrete.

  • As interest in mobile devices and networks has increased recently, voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service, which is a technology for transmitting voice data using an existing internet protocol (IP) network, has rapidly spread, Cheap voice call service has become possible. As the digital broadcasting service becomes popular, hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network technology, which uses broadband cable network through fusion of broadcasting and communication, utilizes existing communication system and network equipment to provide various new services such as interactive broadcasting service. Therefore, if UGS-AD is applied to VoCM and RTPS is applied to MTA in order to guarantee the quality of voice data in actual HFC Internet service network, it is possible to smoothly perform voice data transmission in narrow upstream band which is a problem in actual commercial HFC network We also proposed a method to improve VoIP service by improving QoS of voice data in HFC Internet service network.

  • With the advent of CLSM in the end of 1980s, it has been applied to the field of pulp and paper science in various ways. This study showed the potentials of CLSM In analyzing a change of pulp fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment. In particular, a quantification of internal fibrillation has been done using cross-sectional images of fibers and image analysis technique, then evaluated the effects of fiber wall delamination on fiber and paper properties. It showed that the delaminated fibers were closely associated to development of the interfiber bonding in a fiber network. The CLSM made it possible to investigate a density profile along the sheet thickness, which was created by some papermaking processes like pressing, drying and calendering. Through the attempt to observe the forming procedure of a fiber network during handsheet making, the CLSM images showed that the pressing stage was considered greatly to contribute to generation of interfiber bonding with removing a free water and partly a bound water between fibers. In addition, the CLSM could be used to illustrate not only a surface profile of paper showing the extent of smoothness or roughness, but also a density profile in a B-direction of the network. Finally it became evident that the CLSM could be used as an excellent tool to predict development in fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment during papermaking processes.

  • This paper presents a simple and efficient two-dimensional rigid-body-spring network model able to accurately estimate the fractural behavior of civil fiber reinforced pavements. The proposed rigid-body-spring network model, denoted as RBSN model, considers civil fiber reinforcing materials using the beam elements and link spring elements. The RBSN method is able to model collapse due to asphalt crushing and civil fiber slip. The RBSN model is used to predict the applied load-midspan deflection response of civil fiber retrofitted asphalt specimen subjected to the three-point bending. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements are compared to based on tests available in the literature. The numerically simulated responses agree significantly with the corresponding experimental results until the maximum load. However, It should be mentioned that, in order to more accurately predict the postpeak flexural behavior of the civil fiber retrofitted asphalt pavement, development of the advanced model to simulate the slip relationship between civil fiber and asphalt is required.

  • The current copper-based communication network is going to be replaced with an optic fiber network. The new technology allows a larger amount of information to be transmitted than before. Due to its bandwidth and relatively high installation cost, however, the optic fiber network does not exhibit the inherent structural redundancy provided by the conventional copper-based network. We propose to supply it by adding multiple paths between important nodes. This so-called network survivability problem is computationally expensive to solve exactly. We report the application of a heuristic algorithm to this problem. Also discussed is the issue of how to make use of existing conduits.

  • In radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems, nonlinear compensation is very important to meet the error vector magnitude (EVM) requirement of the mobile network standards. In this study, a nonlinear compensation technique based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for RoF systems. This technique is based on a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) with one hidden layer and three neuron units in this study. The BPNN obtains the inverse response of the system to compensate for nonlinearities. The EVM of the signal is measured by changing the number of neurons and the hidden layers in a RoF system modeled by a measured data. Based on our simulation results, it is concluded that one hidden layer and three neuron units are adequate for the RoF system. Our results showed that the EVMs were improved from 4.027% to 2.605% by using the proposed ANN compensator.

  • The high capillarity of a plastic fiber network having superhydrophilic Si-DLC coating is studied. Although the superhydrophilic surface maximize wetting ability on the flat surface, there remains a requirement for the more wettable surface for various applications such as air-filters or liquid-filters. In this research, the PET non-woven fabric surface was realized by superhydrophilic coating. PTE non-woven fabric network was chosen due to its micro-pore structure, cheap price, and productivity. Superhydrophobic fiber network was prepared with a coating of oxgyen plasma treated Si-DLC films using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). We first fabricated superhydrophilic fabric structure by using a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) non-woven fabric (NWF) coated with a nanostructured films of the Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon (Si-DLC) followed by the plasma dry etching with oxygen. The Si-DLC with oxygen plasma etching becomes a superhydrophilic and the Si-DLC coating have several advantages of easy coating procedure at room temperature, strong mechanical performance, and long-lasting property in superhydrophilicity. It was found that the superhydrophobic fiber network shows better wicking ability through micro-pores and enables water to have much faster spreading speed than merely superhydrophilic surface. Here, capillarity on superhydrophilic fabric structure is investigated from the spreading pattern of water flowing on the vertical surface in a gravitational field. As water flows on vertical flat solid surface always fall down in gravitational direction (i.e. gravity dominant flow), while water flows on vertical superhydrophilic fabric surface showed the capillary dominant spreading.
