  • In this paper, the authors have implemented a blood flow simulator and a blood flowmeter probe using self-mixing effect of the laser diode. The purpose of the blood simulator is to simulate microvascular blood flow in tissue. It consists of melinex film (thickness = $125{\mu}m$) which has similar optical characteristics to epidermis and porous polyethylene filter (Vyon, porosity 35%, mean pore size $50{\mu}m$, thickness=1 mm) which has similar optical characteristics to dermis. The blood flowmeter probe consists of laser diode(5 mW, 780 nm wavelength), CD lens(focal lenght 12 mm), current-to-voltage converter, highpass filter, and preamplifier. It doesn't need optical fiber, therefore, implementation of the probe is simpler than conventional probe using optical fiber.

  • Figure '8' type, passively-mode-locked erbium-doped-fiber ring laser was developed, incorporating a nonlinear loop mirror. Transmittance of the loop mirror was found to be dependent on the incident light intensity due to the non-reciprocal nonlinear phase shift, which enables the passive mode locking of the laser. Self-starting of stable mode locking was possible with only controlling the polarization controllers inside the cavity without any help of external perturbation or modulation. The mode-locked output pulse shape was discussed in relation with the transmission characteristics of nonlinear loop mirror.

  • In this study, a PID control method for sweeping automatic linearization of a wavelength swept laser is proposed. First, the closedloop transfer function embodying the PID control is derived. Through the simulation of the function, Kp = 0.022, Ki = 0.008, Kd = 0.002 were obtained as the best PID coefficients for fast linear sweeping. The performance test using the PID coefficients showed that linear sweeping was held up well with a 98.7% decrement in nonlinearity after the 10th feedback, and 45 nm sweeping range, 1 kHz sweeping frequency, and 8.8 mW average optical power were obtained. The equipment consists of a fiber Bragg grating array, an optical-electronic conversion circuit, and a LabVIEW FPGA program. Every 5s, automatic feedback and PID control generate a new compensated waveform and produce a better linear sweeping than before. Compared with nonlinear sweeping, linear sweeping can reduce the cumbersome and time-consuming recalibration processes and produce more accurate measurement results.

  • Wavelength tunable fiber ring laser can be tuned by causing a resonance on the optical path having the least loss which is controlled by a polarization adjustment. It is observed that lasing wavelengths having 1 nm FSR(Free Spectral Range) can be tuned over the range of 1540-1560 nm when a polarization controller and an intra-cavit polarizer with 1.5 mm air gap are adjusted. The characteristics of wavelength shift in the laser output are analyzed by introducing an optical path modeling and the concept of a birefringence loss.

  • Lasing characteristics of an Er-doped fiber laser have been investigated at various conditions of resonator reflectivities and pump powers. Variation of the laser wavelength with various mirror reflectivities has been compared with the theoretical analysis based on absorption, gain spectra, and resonator parameters. The maximum slope efficiency of 38% was obtained with the resonator's mirror reflectivities of 100% and 4% on both sides, and the threshold powers were varied from 7.8 mW to 5.6 mW, and lasing wavelengths were varied $1.532\mum to 1.563\mum and 1.558 \mum to 1.570 \mum$ for 6 and 15.8 mlong Er-doped fiber, respectively, as the resonator reflectivities were changed from 0.0016 to 0.9.to 0.9.

  • Sagnac interferometer gyroscopes can be divided into three large generations using starting points of time or highlights of their research. As the first generational Sagnac interferometer, the ring laser gyroscopes have been studied since the 1960s by laser invention, and as the second generational Sagnac interferometer, the fiber optic gyroscopes have been studied since the 1970s by invention of optical fiber for communication. In the latter half of the 1990s, after having confirmed the wave theory of the atom, studies of atomic interferometers were started for a next generation gyroscope application. This paper discusses the operation principles, application, and future prospects of these three generations of Sagnac gyroscopes.

  • The joining of Ti and SUS304 dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to save rare metal. But Ti and SUS304 have differences in materials properties, and Ti and Fe intermetallic compounds such as TiFe and $TiFe_2$ are easily formed in weld fusion zone between Ti and SUS304. Nevertheless, in this study, full penetration lap dissimilar welding of Ti and SUS304 using single-mode fiber laser with ultra-high welding speed was tried, and it was found out that ultra-high welding speed could control the generation of intermetallic compound. To recognize the formation of intermetallic phase in the weld fusion zone and the compound zone of interface weld area were observed and analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). And it was confirmed that the ultra-high welding speed could reduce amount of intermetallic compounds, but the intermetallic compounds were existed in the weld fusion zone under the all conditions.

  • In this study, we studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the fiber Bragg gratings written by femtosecond UV laser in single mode optical fibers. The fiber Bragg gratings were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of about 31.6 kGy at the dose rate of 106 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, we confirmed Bragg gratings written by femtosecond laser have the excellent radiation-hardened characteristics for high radiation environments.

  • We demonstrate a compact optical coherence tomography(OCT) system based on the optical fiber delay line controlled by a cylindrical piezo-electric transducer(PZT). An 18-m length of single mode fiber is wrapped under constant tension around a PZT. Approximately 134 windings are used. Wraps of the long length of fiber allow the small expansion of the PZT to be magnified to an optical path length delay of 0.78 m. The OCT system shows characteristics for 2-dimensional imaging, exhibiting 96.9dB of signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), $18.6{\pm}0.5\;{\mu}m$ of axial resolution, and $5\;{\mu}m$ of lateral resolution with samples.
