We propose the use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm for the improvement of measurement accuracy in wavelengthscanned Fabry-Perot filter based demodulation systems. The peak locations of FBG sensors were calculated from the fitted curves rather than from distorted PD profiles, resulting in much better measurement accuracy than that of the highest-peak search algorithm. Also, the algorithm was proved to minimize measurement uncertainty of spectrally-distorted grating sensors. From our experimental results, a temperature resolution as small as ${\sim}0.3^{\circ}C$ was readily achieved by use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm whereas the highest-peak search algorithm gave a temperature resolution larger than ${\sim}4^{\circ}C$.
Full-scale shake table seismic experiments and low-amplitude vibration tests on a masonry building are carried out to assess its seismic performance as well as study the effectiveness of a new multifunctional textile material for retrofitting masonry structures against earthquakes. The un-reinforced and the retrofitted with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) strips masonry building was subjected to a series of earthquake excitations of increasing magnitude in order to progressively induce various small, moderate and severe levels of damage to the masonry walls. The performance of the original and retrofitted building states is evaluated. Changes in the dynamic characteristics (lowest four modal frequencies and damping ratios) of the building are used to assess and quantify the damage states of the masonry walls. For this, the dynamic modal characteristics of the structure states after each earthquake event were estimated by performing low-amplitude impulse hammer and sine-sweep forced vibration tests. Comparisons between the modal results calculated using traditional accelerometers and those using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors embedded in the reinforcing textile were carried on to investigate the reliability and accuracy of FBG sensors in tracking the dynamic behaviour of the building. The retrofitting actions restored the stiffness characteristics of the reinforced masonry structure to the levels of the original undamaged un-reinforced structure. The results show that despite a similar dynamic behavior identified, corresponding to reduction of the modal frequencies, the un-reinforced masonry building was severely damaged, while the reinforced masonry building was able to withstand, without visual damage, the induced strong seismic excitations. The applied GFRP reinforcement architecture for one storey buildings was experimentally proven reliable for the most severe earthquake accelerations. It was easily placed in a short time and it is a cost effective solution (covering only 20% of the external wall surfaces) when compared to the cost for full wall coverage by GFRPs.

In this paper, we proposed a novel true time-delay (TTD) feeder for phased array antennas (PAAs) using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and fibers coated with Cr/Au film. This structure requires less number of FBGs than the previously proposed FBG TTD feeders since one FBG is replaced with a metal film reflector in a strand of optical delay line connected to each antenna element and also provides the flexible wavelength selection since the metal film shows wide reflectance spectrum. A TTD for 10 GHz linear PAAs capable of steering beams in three different directions at 0$^{\circ}$and $\pm$30$^{\circ}$has been built. Experimental results on time delays are in good agreement with those calculated at all the steering angles. A 10 GHz linear array antenna with eight antenna elements red from the proposed TTD has been designed and the far-field radiation pattern or this antenna has been obtained by simulation.

Various studies have been conducted on the structural health monitoring using optical fiber. Optical fibers can be used to measure multiple and distributed strain. Among the optical fiber sensors, FBG sensor has advantages of dynamic response measurement and high precision, but the number of measurement points is limited. Distributed fiber sensors, represented by distributed Brillouin sensors, usually have more than 1000 measurement points, but the low sampling rate makes dynamic measurements impossible. In this study, a hybrid nerve sensor system using only the advantages of the FBG sensor and the distributed Brillouin sensor has been proposed. Laboratory experiments were performed to verify the proposed system, and the accuracy and reproducibility were verified by comparing with commercial sensors. Applying the proposed system, dynamic response ambient measurements are used to evaluate the global state of the structure. When an abnormal condition is detected, the local condition of the structure is evaluated by static response measurement using the distributed measurement system. The proposed system can be used for efficient structural health monitoring.

We have demonstrated an amplified wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) passive optical network (PON) by using broadband light source (BLS) seeded optical sources and chirped fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) based dispersion compensators. Chirped FBGs located at central office (CO) were fabricated and used as channel-by-channel dispersion compensators in order to mitigate the dispersion-induced distortion of both downstream and upstream signals. Owing to a low insertion loss of chirped FBG based dispersion compensator, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the downstream signal could be improved to be ~28 dB. Thus, we re-confirmed that an error-free transmission of 1.25 Gb/s signals over a 100 km single-mode fiber (SMF) link could be achieved with a proposed amplified WDM-PON architecture. We have also evaluated the impact of various noises on the system's performance, and found that the low OSNR of the downstream signal would be a main limiting factor on the maximum reach of the proposed amplified WDM-PON architecture. From the measured ~13 dB improvement in OSNR of the downstream signal compared to our previously-proposed dispersion compensating module based scheme, we believe that the proposed architecture can accommodate a reach of longer than 100 km SMF link easily.
Renewable energy sources such as wind energy is copiously available without any limitation. Wind turbines are used to tap the potential of wind energy which is available in millions of megawatt. Reliability of wind turbine is critical to extract this maximum amount of energy from the wind. We reviewed different techniques, methodologies, and algorithms developed to monitor the performance of wind turbine as well as for an early fault detection to keep away the wind turbines from catastrophic conditions due to sudden breakdowns. To keep the wind turbine in operation, implementation of Condition Monitoring System (CMS) is paramount, and for this purpose ample knowledge of these types of system is mandatory. So, an attempt has been made in this direction to review maximum approaches related to CMS in this piece of writing.
We proposed an analysis model for a Fabry-Perot cavity constructed with a plane-mirrored optical fiber and a concave-mirrored one. We presented the analysis results calculated by inserting practical values into the equations derived. The coupling loss of the cavity and the mirror loss are the most important parameters in reducing the insertion loss of the filter. In order to build a filter of finesse 600, FSR 57 nm, and insertion loss < 3 dB, the plane-concave cavity using mirrors of loss < 0.09% should be aligned for the coupling loss to be less than 0.1 %.
Novel supervisory system for WDM transmission link using conventional optical time domain reflectometry was presented. By modifying the structure of erbuim doped fiber amplifier to support bi-directional transmission at arDR pulse wavelength and launching the optical pulse into transmission link in the opposite direction of data signal propagation to avoid the distortion by cross-gain modulation, it is possible to monitor the WDM link in service. To prove the validity of proposed scheme, the supervision result of 2.5 Gbps $\times$ 8 channel WDM 320 km transmission system in service by arDR was presented. And power penalty due to monitoring was measured as smaller than 0.3 dB. .3 dB.

Among many types of light rail transits (LRT), the rubber-tired automated guide-way transit (AGT) is prevalent in many countries due to its advantages such as good acceleration/deceleration performance, high climb capacity, and reduction of noise and vibration. However, AGT is generally powered by high-voltage electric power feeding system and it may cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) to measurement sensors. The fiber optic sensor system is free from EMI and has been successfully applied in many applications of civil engineering. Especially, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are the most widely used because of their excellent multiplexing capabilities. This paper investigates a prestressed concrete girder bridge in the Korean AGT test track using FBG based sensors to monitor the dynamic response at various vehicle speeds. The serviceability requirements provided in the specification are also compared against the measured results. The results show that the measured data from FBG based sensors are free from EMI though electric sensors are not, especially in the case of electric strain gauge. It is expected that the FBG sensing system can be effectively applied to the LRT railway bridges that suffered from EMI.
Ground anchor method is one of the most popular reinforcing technology in Korea. For the sound monitoring of slope reinforced by permanent anchor for a long period, monitoring the tension force of ground anchor is very important. However, special technology except conventional load cell has not been developed for this purpose. In this paper, a new method is described to replace the conventional strain gauge and V.W. type load cell which has been commonly used as a prestress force monitoring tool for a short-term and long-term. Four 11.5 m long strain detectable tension type anchors were made using FBG sensor embedded tendon since FBG sensor is smaller than strain gauge type load cell and does not have noise from electromagnetic wave. Each two set strain detectable tension type anchors were installed into the different ground conditions, i.e., soft rock and weathered granite soil. Prestress force of ground anchor was monitored during the loading-unloading step from in-situ pullout test using proposed FBG sensor embedded in the tendon and the conventional load cell Test results show that the prestress force monitored from FBG sensor may well be used practically, for it almost matches with that measured from expensive load cell.
