In this study, the compression test of steel fiber reinforced high-strength concrete have been performed with varying strengths and volume factions of steel fiber. Three types of matrices including low strength concrete( c'=30 MPa), medium strength concrete( c'=50 MPa), and high strength concrete( c'=70 MPa) were selected. Five types of fiber fractions were studied including 0.0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, and 1.5% by volume. From the results of the compressive strength test, the post-peak characteristics of the stress-strain relationship were investigated, and the existing equations to predict the elastic modulus were experimentally evaluated.
Nowadays, shotcrete plays an essential part in the construction of underground structures, and fiber reinforcement is so useful for increasing the toughness of the concrete that is spotlighted at tunnel or pavement construction. Therefore, many type of fibers have been introduced on the site and variety of tests have been developed to measure and quantify the improvements achievable in fiber reinforced concrete and shotcrete. Therefore, this study focuses on the flexural toughness according to the fiber types and appraisal methods. The major interests are fiber types, volume fractions and evaluation methods.
Due to their flexible tailoring qualities, composites have become fascinating materials for structural engineers. While the research area of fiber-reinforced composite materials was previously limited to synthetic materials, natural fibers have recently become the primary research focus as the best alternative to artificial fibers. The natural fibers are eco-friendly and relatively cheaper than synthetic fibers. The main concern of current research into natural fiber-reinforced composites is the prediction and enhancement of the effective material properties. In the present work, finite element analysis is used with a numerical homogenization approach to determine the effective material properties of jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composites with various volume fractions of fiber. The finite element analysis results for the jute fiber-reinforced epoxy composite are then compared with several well-known analytical models.
Nine steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams and three steel fiber reinforced normal strength concrete beams without stirrups were tested by two point load. The variables studied in this investigation are the shear span/depth ratios of a/d = 2, 3 and 4, steel fiber volume fractions of V$_{f}$ : 0, 0.5% and 0.75% and concrete compressive strengths of f$_{ck}$: 630kgf/$cm^{2}$, and 310kgf/$cm^{2}$. Based on these tests and on tests by previous investigators, predictive equation is proposed for evaluating the ultimate shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. The proposed equation gave good prediction for the ultimate shear strength of the tested beams.
In this study, the creep behaviors of amorphous steel fiber-reinforced concrete were investigated. Two different types of tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of amorphous steel fibers on the creep of concrete: compressive creep test and tensile creep test. Fiber volume fractions used in the test were 0.2% and 0.4% for tensile specimens, and 0.2% and 0.3% for compressive specimens. Based on the test results, the addition of fiber volume fraction of 0.2% into concrete could significantly reduce both compressive and tensile creep.
Since the electromagnetic properties of fiber reinforced polymeric composites can be tailored effectively by adding small amount of electromagnetic powders to the matrix of composites, they are plausible materials for fabricating the radar absorbing structures (RAS) of desired performance. In order to design the effective electromagnetic wave (EM) absorber with the fiber reinforced polymeric composites, the electromagnetic characteristics with respect to the constituents of the composite should be available in the target frequency band. In order to describe the dielectric behavior of low loss unidirectional fiber reinforced composite, theoretical models and mixture equations for estimating its dielectric constant were proposed with respect to the fiber, matrix volume fractions and fiber orientations, and verified by the experiments. From the investigation, it was found that the suggested binary mixture rules agreed well with the experimental results.
The contribution of steel fibers on the 28-day compressive strength of high-performance steel fiber reinforced concrete was investigated, is presented. An extensive experimentation was carried out over water-cementitious materials (w/cm) ratios ranging from 0.25 to 0.40, with silica fume-cementitious materials ratios from 0.05 to 0.15, and fiber volume fractions ($V_f$= 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) with the aspect ratios of 80 and 53. Based on the test results of 44 concrete mixes, mathematical model was developed using statistical methods to quantify the effect of fiber content on compressive strength of HPSFRC in terms of fiber reinforcing index. The expression, being developed with strength ratios and not with absolute values of strengths, is independent of specimen parameters and is applicable to wide range of w/cm ratios, and used in the mix design of steel fiber reinforced concrete. The estimated strengths are within ${\pm}3.2%$ of the actual values. The model was tested for the strength results of 14 mixes having fiber aspect ratio of 53. On examining the validity of the proposed model, there exists a good correlation between the predicted values and the experimental values of different researchers. Equation is also proposed for the size effect of the concrete specimens.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of protein and dietary fiber levels on the activities of ehanol metabilizing enzymes of the brain in acute and chronic ethanol-treated rats. Male Sprague-Dwley rats were fed on diets containing two levels of protein(7%, 20%)) with two levels of fiber(5%, 105) for 5 weeks. Rats were orally administered 40% (v/v) ethanol(5g/body weight) 90 min before decapitation in the acute ethanol-treated groups and 25% (v/v) ethanol (5g/kg body weight) once a day for 5 weeks in the chronic ethnol-treated groups. Cytosilic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activities were higher than those of mitochondrial ADH. The ADH activities were increased by 20% protein and %% fiber levels in the diet in two fractions , but were decreased by chronic ethanol treatment. Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities did not change by ethanol treatment but were increased by the 20% protein level. However, cytosilic ALDH activities were decreased by chronic ethanol treatment at the 5% fiber level and did not change with protein levels. Both ALDH activities were higher in the 10% fiber groups than the 5% fiber groups. Cytochrome P-450 contents were significantly increased in the chronic ethanol-treated groups but xanthine oxidase (XO) activities did not change. P-450 contents and XO activities were significantly decreased in both the low protein and fiber groups.
Since the mechanical properties of cement-based materials are time-dependent due to the prolonged cement hydration process, those of fiber reinforced concrete(FRC) may also be time-dependent. Toughness is one of important properties of FRC. Therefore, it should be investigated toughness development of FRCs with curing ages to fully understand the time-dependent characteristics of FRCs. To this end, the effect of curing ages on flexural toughness development of steel fiber reinforced concrete is studied. Three point bending test with notched beam specimen was adapted for this study. Hooked-end steel fiber(DRAMIX 40/30) was used as a fiber ingredient to investigate w/c ratio and fiber volume fraction effect on toughness development during curing. Three different water-cement ratios(0.44, 0.5 and 0.6) and fiber volume fractions(0%, 0.5% and 1%) were used as influence factors. Each mixture specimens were tested at five different ages, 0.5, 1, 3, 7 and 28 days. The study shows that flexure toughness development with age is quite different than other concrete material properties such as compressive strength. The study also shows that the toughness development trend correlates more closely to water/cement ratio than to fiber volume fraction.
Research on permeable pavement like asphalt and concrete pavement with porous structure has been increasing due to environmental and functional need such as reduction of run off and flood, and increase and purification of underwater resource. This study was performed to evaluate permeability, strengths and durability of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using recycled aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the compressive strength and permeability coefficient of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. The weight reduction ratios for PPC after 300 cycles of freezing and thawing were in the range of 1.6~3.8 % and 2.2~5.6 %, respectively. The weight change ratio was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates. The weight reduction ratios of PPC with fiber and aggregate were in the range of 1.3~2.7 % and 2.2~3.2 % after 13 weeks and was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates.
