This study evaluated the effects of water velocity, substrates, and phosphorus concentrations on the growth of filamentous periphytic algae (FPA) in the two types of artificial channel systems using treated wastewater. Controlled parameters included 5 ${\sim}$ 15 cm $s^{-1}$ for the water velocity; 10 and 20 mm wire meshes, natural fiber net, gravel and tile for the substrates: and 0.05 ${\sim}$ 1.0 mgP $L^{-1}$ for the P concentration. Algal growth rate of FPA was compared using both chi. a and dry weight change with time. Under the controlled water velocity range, the growth of FPA increased with the velocity, but the maximum growth rate was shown in the velocity of 10 cm $s^{-1}$. The substrate that showed the maximum growth of FPA differed between the artificial channel and indoor channel, due to the influence of suspended matters which caused the clogging of the meshed substrates. Under the controled range of P concentration, the growth rates of all three FPA species (Spirogyra turfosa, Oedogonium fovelatum, Rhizoclonium riparium) increased with the P increase, but they showed the differential growth rates among different P concentrations. The results of this study suggest that under the circumstance having an large amount of nutrients FPA develop the biomass rapidly and that even a little increase over the threshold velocity causes the detachment of filamentous periphytic algae. Thus, FPA dynamics in eutrophic streams, such as those receiving treated wastewater, seem to be sensitive to the water velocity. On the other hand, detached algal filaments could deteriorate water quality and ecosystem function in receiving streams or down-stream, and thus they need to be recognized as an important factor in water quality management in eutrophic streams.
In this paper, we numerically induced the optimal values of optical phase conjugator (OPC) position and dispersion coefficients of fiber sections, which can improve the bit error rate (BER) and design the adaptive WDM transmission system, as a function of the extinction ratio (ER) of 10 dB and 20 dB in $16{\times}40$ Gb/s WDM transmission system. It is confirmed that these optimal parameter values for effectively compensating overall WDM channels are dependence on the extinction ratio of signals as well as modulation format, transmitted channel numbers, which were investigated in previous researches. It is also confirmed that ER of 20 dB has the advantage of designing flexible WDM systems using optimal parameters than ER of 10 dB.
Buprenorphine, one of the mixed agonist-antagonist opioid drugs was used to inverstigate the opioid receptor on frog sciatic nerve A fibers. Action potentials were recorded for 4 hrs by a sucrose gap apparatus which were separated by four rubber membranes. To examine the one of the mechanism of action of buprenorphine, meperidine or naloxone was added after or before the treatment of buprenorphine. The results of this experiment were as follows: 1. Buprenorphine suppressed significantly the compound action potentials of frog sciatic nerve, and the maximal effects were shown both at $10^{-4}\;M$ and at $10^{-8}\;M$. 2. The dose-response relationship of buprenorphine on the depressant effect in frog sciatic nerve was biphasic and inverted U-shaped. 3. Buprenorphine blocked the effect of Meperidine $(10^{-3}\;M)$ on this preparation. 4. The depressant effcct of Buprenorphine on frog sciatic nerve was blocked by $10^{-8}\;M$ naloxone. From the above results, buprenorphine acts as one of agoinist-antagonistic effect on frog sciatic nerve, and the opioid receptor on this preparation is located on or near the intracellular opening of the sodium channels, which are sensitive to naloxone.
Background and aims: The KCNQ1 S140G mutation involved in $I_{ks}$ channel is a typical gene mutation affecting atrial fibrillation. However, despite the possibility that the S140G gene mutation may affect not only atrial but also ventricular action potential shape and ventricular responses, there is a lack of research on the relationship between this mutation and ventricular fibrillation. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the correlation and the influence of the KCNQ1 S140G mutant gene on ventricular fibrillation through computer simulation studies. Method: This study simulated a 3-dimensional ventricular model of the wild type(WT) and the S140G mutant conditions. It was performed by dividing into normal sinus rhythm simulation and reentrant wave propagation simulation. For the sinus rhythm, a ventricular model with Purkinje fiber was used. For the reentrant propagation simulation, a ventricular model was used to confirm the occurrence of spiral wave using S1-S2 protocol. Results: The result showed that 41% shortening of action potential duration(APD) was observed due to augmented $I_{ks}$ current in S140G mutation group. The shortened APD contributed to reduce wavelength 39% in sinus rhythm simulation. The shortened wavelength in cardiac tissue allowed re-entrant circuits to form and increased the probability of sustaining ventricular fibrillation, while ventricular electrical propagation with normal wavelength(20.8 cm in wild type) are unlikely to initiate re-entry. Conclusion: In conclusion, KCNQ1 S140G mutation can reduce the threshold of the re-entrant wave substrate in ventricular cells, increasing the spatial vulnerability of tissue and the sensitivity of the fibrillation. That is, S140G mutation can induce ventricular fibrillation easily. It means that S140G mutant can increase the risk of arrhythmias such as cardiac arrest due to heart failure.
SCST(The generic SCSI target subsystem for Linux) enables developers to make SCSI target storage and supports various SCSI network protocol such as iSCSI, FC, SRP. In this paper, we propose storage virtualization method using SCST and virtualize all flash array as high performance storage through 4Gb Fiber Channel, 10Gb Ethernet and 40Gb Infiniband and evaluate their performance, respectively. Experimental result shows that 40Gb infiniband network appliance have better performance than others. In case of sequential/random read, 40Gb infiniband network appliance shows 78% and 79% of local all flash array performance attached to SCSI target system. In case of sequential/random write, it shows 83% and 88% of local flash array performance attached to SCSI target system.

Optical packet switching (OPS) is being considered as one of the switching technologies for a future optical internet. For contention resolution in an optical packet switching (OPS) system, the wavelength dimension is generally used in combination with a fiber delay line (FDL) buffer. In this article, we propose a method to reduce the number of tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) by sharing TWCs for a cost-effective design of an asynchronous OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Asynchronous and variable-length packets are considered in the OPS system design. To investigate the number of TWCs needed for the OPS system, an algorithm is proposed, which searches for an available TWC and an unused internal wavelength, as well as an outgoing channel. This algorithm is applied to an OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Also, the number of internal wavelengths (i.e., the conversion range of the TWC) needed for an asynchronous OPS system is presented for cost reduction of the OPS system.

A multichannel optical slotted ring network is designed using a wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technique and photonic packet switching devices. The electronics speed bottleneck is removed out of the ring, which allows utilization of the full bandwidth for the optical fiber transmission medium. The ring channel adopts a slotted ring concept with a destination cell remove strategy for the eing access mechanism. The slot size in the ring is selected as the same as that of ATM based cell in order to be used as B-ISDN Access Networks. In this paper, we devised a mathematical method to measure the average transfer delay characteristics of the network. The analytical method turned out to yield accurate results over a broad range of parameters in comparison to simulation results. From the study, we observed the average transfer delay of the network as the network parameters vary.

In this paper, we have shown the gain recovery time of erbium-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) in WDM add/drop networks can be reduced to less than $3\mu$sec by employing disturbance observer technique with PID controller which is based on 3-level EBFA model. The $3\mu$sec transient time is the fastest one ever reported and it is about $1\%$ of $250\mu$sec previously obtained from disturbance observer technique with PI controller which was based on 2-level EDFA model and it is also less than $200\mu$sec of commercially available EDFAs for WDM networks. We were able to obtain this result by analyzing various system characteristics as we change the parameters of disturbance observer and PID controller. If this result is applied to a commercial product, the product will do an important role in the future dynamic WDM networks.
For growing need for the multimedia application in the vehicles, the MOST protocol has been focused on. The MOST protocol supports three kinds of communication modes; short control message, asynchronous packets, and reserved synchronous stream data. Because of a variety of transportation, the MOST is suitable for various applications in vehicle environment. In this paper, we implemented embedded system which is MOST-enabled AMS platform and tested the network communication operation through the control port and the synchronous channel of the source port. We implemented the prototype platforms which communicate each other on the MOST's POF network. Moreover we implemented the DivX decoder attached AMS platform and verified the operation by transferring the video stream and the control messages through the MOST network.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Dictyota coriacea extract and its active components such as 1,9-dihydroxycrenulide and epiloliolide on the hair growth. Treatment with D. coriacea extract and the hexane and EtOAc fractions of D. coriacea extract significantly increased the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (DPCs), a central regulator of the hair cycle. Especially, 1,9-dihydroxycrenulide and epiloliolide from D. coriacea extract, caused an increase in the DPC proliferation. When isolated rat vibrissa follicles were treated with 1,9-dihydroxycrenulide or epiloliolide for 21 d, the hair-fiber lengths for the vibrissa follicles increased. When examined the activity of 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a main cause of androgenetic alopecia, the several solvent fractions of D. coriacea extract significantly decreased the 5α-reductase activity while 1,9-dihydroxycrenulide and epiloliolide scarcely inhibited 5α-reductase activity. In addition, we found that the D. coriacea extract and several solvent fractions of D. coriacea extract could not act as a KATP channel opener, which could be a contributory factor in the effect on hair growth. These results suggest that D. coriacea extract and 1,9-dihydroxycrenulide and epiloliolide, principals of D. coriacea, have the potential to treat alopecia via the proliferation of DPCs.
