  • In this study, a PID control method for sweeping automatic linearization of a wavelength swept laser is proposed. First, the closedloop transfer function embodying the PID control is derived. Through the simulation of the function, Kp = 0.022, Ki = 0.008, Kd = 0.002 were obtained as the best PID coefficients for fast linear sweeping. The performance test using the PID coefficients showed that linear sweeping was held up well with a 98.7% decrement in nonlinearity after the 10th feedback, and 45 nm sweeping range, 1 kHz sweeping frequency, and 8.8 mW average optical power were obtained. The equipment consists of a fiber Bragg grating array, an optical-electronic conversion circuit, and a LabVIEW FPGA program. Every 5s, automatic feedback and PID control generate a new compensated waveform and produce a better linear sweeping than before. Compared with nonlinear sweeping, linear sweeping can reduce the cumbersome and time-consuming recalibration processes and produce more accurate measurement results.

  • We studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs by a variation of grating the fabrication parameters. The FBGs were fabricated in a different UV KrF laser intensity using the same boron co-doped photo-sensitive fiber and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 33.8 kGy. According to the experimental data and analysis results, We confirmed that the laser intensity for grating inscription has a highly effect on the radiation sensitivity of the FBGs and the radiation-induced Bragg wavelength shift by the change of laser process condition showed a difference more than about 30 %.

  • FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is an excellent new constructional material in resistibility to corrosion, high intensity, resistibility to fatigue, and plasticity. FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensor is widely used at present as a smart sensor due to lots of advantages such as electric resistance, small-sized material, and high durability. However, with insufficiency of measuring displacement, FBG sensor is used only as a sensor measuring physical properties like strain or temperature. In this study, FRP and FBG sensors are to be hybridized, which could lead to the development of a smart FRP rod. Moreover, developing the estimated model for deflection with neural network method, with the data measured through FBG sensor, could make conquest of a disadvantage of FBG sensor - uniquely used for sensing strain. Artificial neural network is MLP (Multi-layer perceptron), trained within error rate of 0.001. Nonlinear object function and back-propagation algorithm is applied to training and this model is verified with the measured axial displacement through UTM and the estimated numerical values.

  • FBG(Fiber Bragg grating)s have shown a great potential for sensing applications, and are easily embedded in materials with a negligible impact on the mechanical properties of the host. However, the use of FBG sensors is limited by their simultaneous dependence on strain and temperature, thus only one parameter can be determined from a single grating. This paper reviews various methods to discriminate between strain and temperature effects. To overcome this cross sensitivity using only embedded optical fibers, a number of techniques have been proposed, most of them relying on the deconvolution of two simultaneous measurements.

  • In this paper, two types of micro-optic submersion detection systems are proposed and demonstrated. The structures are based on the transmission and reflection of incident light, respectively. Two collimators are separated by 10 mm and installed face to face in straight line. The incident light transmits from one side of collimator to the other through the air, but the optical loss is below 1 dB. On the other hand, when the sensors are submersed into water, most of optical power scattered into water. The systems monitor the dramatical power change to alarm the submersion. Reflection type of sensor system has a Bragg grating at the end of the sensor for back-reflection of sensing signal. This is for simple configuration of systems. The performance of two sensor systems are described in detail.

  • Application of FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors to measure strain of steel roof trusses has been performed. This is to check and confirm the structural integrity of an unusually shaped, reverse shell structure made of reinforced concrete. The issue was to place sensors at proper location and compare the measured values to the results from structural analysis. It has been learned that a deliberate measurement scheme is needed in order to monitor a complex structure during construction. In this study, the measured values were within allowable range of strain, thus confirming the safety of the structure during measurement and construction.

  • A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor imbedded small wind turbine blade was manufactured to experimentally investigate the feasibility to embed FBG sensors between layers of glass fiber to monitor dynamic strains of the wind turbine blade. The blade which is similar to a commercial 300 W wind turbine blade was manufactured with glass fiber as a reinforcement and epoxy resin as base material. A total of five FBG sensors including one temperature sensor were imbedded in the blade to sense mechanical strain and temperature. While manufacturing the blade, residual strain and temperature that occurred in the small wind turbine blade were monitored using the imbedded FBG sensor array. To examine the sensor performance, an impact test was carried out. The experimental results from the FBG sensors were close to those from electrical strain gages mounted on the blade root surface. The mode shapes of the blade were analyzed also using a commercial Ansys simulation with a model obtained from a three dimensional laser scanning of the blade.

  • Among many fabrication methods of composite materials, filament winding is the most effective method for fabricating axis-symmetric structures such as pressure tanks and pipes. Filament wound pressure tanks are under high internal pressure during the operation and it has the complexity in damage mechanisms and failure modes. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. In this paper, we fabricated several filament wound pressure tanks with embedded FBG sensors and conducted some kinds of experiments such as an impact test, a bending test, and a thermal cycling test. From the experimental results, it was successfully demonstrated that FBG sensors are very appropriate to composite structures fabricated by filament winding process even though they are embedded into composites by multiplexing.

  • Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) like other optical fiber sensors also has the merit of embedding capability. To increase their actual value related to embedding capability, this paper reported the reliability and signal characteristics of FBGS embedded in composite laminates. The microphotographs of embedded optical fibers visualized the embedding environments of stripped optical fibers and coated optical fibers. Based on these microphotographs and cure monitoring performed using FBGs, we could understand that the main cause breaking the unique Bragg condition of low-birefrigence FBG were residual stress artier curing and reported the stale of stress/strain of optical fiber quantitatively. The cure monitoring also showed the history of splitting peak of a stripped FBG along cure processing. In addition, we could obtain a transverse insensitive grating(TIG) with ease by recoating a stripped FBG. TIG has good advantage for real-time signal processing.
