  • We have synthesized and characterized the first cyclic co-oligomeric ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) based on cyclic siloxanes and found that the co-oligomer containing two different mesogenic units exhibits $SmC^*$ mesophase over a wide temperature range from $65^{\circ}C$ to $135^{\circ}C$, much wider than those of the monomer counterparts and the cyclic homo-oligomers. The cyclic co-oligomeric liquid crystal readily filled the display cell and exhibited fast switching times in the range of 4 ms to 6 ms over the entire $SmC^*$ phase. Moreover, the practical absence of layer shrinkage, attributed to de Vries-type transition, shows an additional significant advanage for cyclic co-oligomeric FLCs in LCD applications.

  • In-plane switching characteristics of PI rubbed ITO sandwich cell with low molecule FLC (ferroelectric liquid crystal) surface was investigated. FLC on the surface is governed by the applying frequency and surface condition. By controlling the Ps (spontaneous polarization) direction of dual FLC surfaces, switching characteristics are improved without change of cell structure.

  • We fabricated a flexible ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) device containing polymer walls and networks which fix plastic film substrates. The device using 100-${\mu}m$-thick substrates could be bent in a radius of 7mm without disordering the FLC alignment. When sandwiched between polarizers a roll-up display with high-speed grayscale capability for moving-image displays was created.

  • We have found that the hysteretic behavior of a polymer stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal system coincides with Blinov et. al's model qualitatively. The hysteresis inversion frequency could be promoted up to 7000 Hz by connecting external capacitor and resistor in serial. In addition, the influence of temperature and the amplitude of the applied field on hysteresis-free switching of the cell could be minimized.

  • Abstract A new and versatile method for the preparation of biphenyl thioester series was studied in ferroelectric liquid crystal. Many of the resulting liquid crystal showed a ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase in addition to the chiral nematic and smectic A phase. We obtained a large spontaneous polarization exceeding $10^{-8}$C/c$m^2$ in new biphenyl thioester series. It was found that the size and polarity of the substituent in chiral carbon influenced the magnitude of spontaneous polarization. The series allow us to determine the influence of substituent size in the chiral carbon the existence and the stability of the Sc* phase.

  • We propose on a novel vertical configuration (VC) for a helix-deformed ferroelectric liquid crystal (HDFLC) display that has fast response, high contrast, analog gray scale capability, and wide-viewing characteristics. In contrast to a conventional HDFLC in a planar geometry, smectic layers arrange themselves parallel to the substrates, and thus, extremely uniform alignment of molecules in large area is naturally achieved in our new configuration without additional processes such as the rubbing and/or electric field treatment. Moreover, with a proper design of electrode patterns on the same substrate, multidomain switching is easily realized without employing any complex process of alignment. Our new VC-HDFLC is expected to provide a viable technology to produce a next-generation large area LCD suitable for processing the dynamic image at a video-rate.

  • The effect of the temperature dependence of the smectic layer spacing in the smectic-A (SmA) phase on the formation of defects in the ferroelectric smectic-$C^{\ast}$ ($SmC^{\ast}$) phase is investigated with x-ray scattering technique. The study is based on thin parallel-aligned surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with two different alignment conditions, high pretilt $SiO_x$, alignment and low pretilt polyimide films. It is found that defects observed in the $SmC^{\ast}$ phase have much more profound dependence on the layer changes and chevron formation in the SmA phase than in the $SmC^{\ast}$ phase. We find that thermal layer expansion with decreasing temperature in the SmA phase suppresses the formation of defects observed in the SmC phase.

  • Here we report the effect of photo-spacer and polymer wall on the mechanical stability of the polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (PSFLC) system. A better bending tolerance of the PSFLC cell was obtained when the polymer wall was formed parallel to the rubbing direction. In addition, the effect of the distance between photo-spacer columns as well as that of the distance between polymer wall columns on the mechanical stability of the liquid crystal was examined.

  • New banana-shaped achiral compounds, 1,3-phenylene bis [4-{4-(alkenyloxy) phenyliminomethyl}benzoate]s were synthesized by varying the length of alkenyl group; their ferroelectric properties are described. The smectic mesophases, including a switchable chiral smectic C $(Sm\;C^*)$ phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and triangular wave method. The presence of vinyl groups at the terminals of linear side wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules containing Schiff's base mesogen induced a decrease in melting temperature and formation of the switchable $(Sm\;C^*)$ phase in the melt. The smectic phases having the octenyloxy group such as $(CH_2)_6CH=CH_2$ showed ferroelctric switching, and their values of spontaneous polarization on reversal of an applied electric field were 120 nC/cm² (X=H) and 225 nC/ cm² (X=F), respectively. We could obtain ferroelectric phases by controlling the number of carbon atom in alkenyloxy chain of a bent-core molecule.
