The survey was conducted in 2005 and it evaluated totally 34,152 cases. Among them 3074 cases investigating the elderly aged over 65 years were selected for this study and finally 2036 cases were included in it by excluding cases with no answer or a wrong answer. The results were as follows. In the illness days, the average of the whole subjects was 11.05 days and it was longer when subjects were female and older, had lower educational background and lower family income, did not have spouses and jobs and were covered by medical aid as medical security. In the years of activity restriction, the average of the total subjects was 3.48 years and it was increased when they were older, had lower educational background and lower family income, did not have spouses, lived in detached houses and were covered by medical aid as medical security. Subjective health condition of the total subjects was 2.64 points out of 5 points in average. The scores were higher when subjects were male, younger, had better educational background, spouses, jobs and more family income, lived in multi-family living houses and were covered by corporate insurance as medical security. The average of total quality of life of the subjects was 2.61 points out of 3 points and it was found to be higher when subjects were male, younger, had better educational background, spouses, jobs and more family income and were covered by corporate insurance as medical security. It was decreased with higher illness days, higher years of activity restriction and lower subjective health condition. For the effects of the factors related to quality of life, subjective health condition showed the largest influence.

  • In this paper, we analyze a rather vaguely-defined concept of environmental consciousness by examining causal association among sub-concepts that constitute environmental consciousness; environmental concern, environmental policy evaluation, and environmental practice. An empirical research is conducted on Korean Ministry of Environment's 2000 survey. It was found that environmental concern and environmental practice were highly correlated. While environmental policy evaluation did not show any significant relationship with them, it depended heavily on regime-intimacy instead. Socio-economic factors showed different effects on sub-concepts. Elder and more-educated people showed more environmental concern while female and elderly people were more active on environmental practice. These findings are different from foreign studies, which may suggest that our environmental movement could be understood quite differently from their experience.

  • A number of screening tools have been developed to evaluate the human balance capability. Many of them were designed to identify the elderly with falling risk. Three different screening tools, which have been well used many clinical fields, were used in this study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate balance capability in facilities maintenance workers in korea. There were no statistical significance between male and female when evaluated with three different screening tools. However, significant differences were found among the age groups irrespective of gender when evaluated with three different screening tools. The results of three different screening tools in korea showed poor values compared with previous results. These results revealed that facilities maintenance workers faced more critical falling risk in korea.

  • A 94-year-old female with end-stage renal disease presents with fever, fatigue, and hematochezia. She had previously resided in Hunan Province, China, and Myanmar, and she immigrated to Taiwan 30 years ago. Colonoscopy revealed a colonic ulcer. Biopsy of the colonic ulcer showed ulceration of the colonic mucosa, and many Paragonimus westermani-like eggs were noted. Serum IgG antibody levels showed strong reactivity with P. westermani excretory-secretory antigens by ELISA. Intestinal paragonimiasis was thus diagnosed according to the morphology of the eggs and serologic finding. After treatment with praziquantel, hematochezia resolved. The present case illustrates the extreme manifestations encountered in severe intestinal paragonimiasis.

  • Herpes zoster (HZ) is an acute, unilateral inflammatory viral infection characterized by a rash with painful blisters in a localized area of the body. HZ is often associated with intense pain in the acute phase and presents postherpetic neuralgia in the chronic phase. During the prodromal stage of the HZ from the trigeminal nerve, however, the only presenting symptom may be odontalgia, which could be particularly difficult to diagnose. This distinctive syndrome occurs predominantly in the immunocompromised or elderly individuals. In this article, we report a case of HZ developed in the trigeminal nerve of a 60-year-old immunocompromised female patient, whose symptoms including atypical, non-odontogenic odontalgia had improved after series of antiviral treatments.

  • Angina bullosa hemorrhagica (ABH) is a rare oral mucosal disorder characterized by blood blisters which is not related to hematologic or immunopathologic abnormalities. ABH is most common in middle-aged and elderly people and associated with local trauma, diabetes and long-term use of inhaled steroids. Diagnosis is generally based on reviewing history and clinical presentation and it is important to distinguish it from other serious disorders. Usually, ABH is benign condition which requires no treatment. We present a case of 81-year-old female with ABH.

The main results were as follows: 1) About 1 in 6 adults reported that they provided care for the relatives and friends during the previous year. 2) The proportion of male to female caregivers was similar, indicating a higher prevalence of male involvement than previous studies indicated. Yet, the relationships to care recipients and types of care were found to be different by gender of caregiver 3) Adult caregivers are most likely to provide care for the elderly, but continue to provide care for younger persons as well. 4) A nontrivial proportion of the respondents reported providing care for more than one person, suggesting the need to pay special attention to these multiple caregivers.

  • Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) is a useful drug for treating neuropathic pain. However, tremors are one of the relatively frequent side effects of TCA. A female patient, who was suffering from postherpetic neuralgia, was treated with amitriptyline starting with 10 mg/day. She developed resting tremors on the second day after increasing the dose to 30 mg/day. This case highlights the need for the careful use of amitriptyline in the treatment of neuropathic pain in elderly patients.
