To study the correlation between body composition values and practice of the Standard Guideline for Korean Dietary Life, a nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted with 378 female college students living in four Korean cities in December 2005. Among the student subjects, 98 were analyzed for body fat mass, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio(WHR), body mass index(BMI) and obesity degree using Inbody 3.0(Biospace Co, Seoul, Korea). Percent body fat was at a high level of 54.1 %, WHR was at a high level of 58.2% and BMI was at a high level of 41.8%. However, both weight and body fat were below normal at 79.5% and 77.6%, respectively. Percent body fat, WHR, and BMI were slightly negatively correlated with vegetable consumption, but slightly positively correlated with beer intake. WHR > 0.8 was significantly negatively correlated with exercise. Standard Guideline for Korean Dietary Life was practiced to and above normal level by 64.6% of the female college students. However, female college students who are within the normal range of body composition value should notice that obesity will relate to abdominal or visceral fat on their body.
This study was conducted to investigate how much influence home environment and satisfaction degree with a undergraduate major have on female students' college adjustment. For this purpose, 190 undergraduate females participated in and completed all measures, and we analysed the data with SPSS computer programs. The results of this study are as follows: First, home environment and college adjustment have a positive correlation. Also, the students' satisfaction degree with their majors and college adjustment are positively correlated. Second, their satisfaction degree with a major was found to be different according to what year they are in. Third, the students' college adjustment was found to be different according to the satisfaction degree with their majors. Fourth, the female undergraduates' college adjustment was found to be different according to their home environment.
The purpose of this study is to assess folate intake, and serum and red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations, and investigate the association between folate status and health-related behaviors among Korean college students. A total of 169 students, aged between 18 and 27 years, participated in this study. Dietary intake data were collected by trained interviewers using a 24-hour recall method for three non-consecutive days in 2009. Information on health-related behaviors was obtained by a self-administered questionnaire. Serum and RBC folate concentrations were measured by microbiological assay. The average intakes of folate were $456{\mu}gDFE$ and $347{\mu}gDFE$ in male and female students, respectively. While the average serum folate concentration was significantly lower in male students (8.9 ng/mL) compared to female students (12.5 ng/mL), RBC concentrations were not significantly different between male (398.6 ng/mL) and female students (405.3 ng/mL). In male students, low serum folate concentrations were associated with total folate intake less than the Estimated Average Requirement, non-use of folic acid supplements, smoking, alcohol drinking at least once a week and low physical activity. In female students, low serum folate concentrations were associated with smoking and alcohol drinking at least two drinks at a time and BMI ${\geq}25$. Alcohol drinking and low physical activity were also associated with low RBC folate concentrations in both male and female students. In order to improve folate nutritional status of college students, the practice of desirable health-related behaviors, such as non-smoking, moderate alcohol drinking, regular physical activity, and maintenance of healthy BMI should be encouraged along with consumption of folate-rich foods and supplements.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the relationships among parent-child communication, self-esteem and sexual assertiveness for male and female university students. Methods: This descriptive study used a comparative survey design that utilized self-report questionnaires. A total of 470 participants were male and female university students in B metropolitan city. Results: The degree of open communication use was higher for female students in comparison to male students, There were no differences in dysfunctional communication for both the father-child communication. There were no differences between males and females for the mother-child communication either. The degree of self-esteem was higher for male students in comparison to the female students. The degree of sexual assertiveness was higher for female students in comparison to the male students. The grade, religion, major, allowance source, marital status of parents, and relationship experience with opposite sex were influencing factors for the male students' sexual assertiveness whereas the individual's major and physical contact were influencing factors for the female students. Conclusion: Self-esteem and mother-child open communication were influencing factors of sexual assertiveness. Thus, the nursing intervention based on the influencing factors is needed in order for male and female students to express sexual assertiveness.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and examine gender role identity and sexual attitude according to sex among college students. Method: The subjects consisted of 1,118 college students. The tool for gender role identity and sexual attitude was the Korea Gender Role Identity Inventory(KGRII) of Lee, Kim and Koh(2002) and the Sexual Attitude Scale of Koh, Kim and Lee(2005). The collected data was analyzed using descriptive analyzed statistics, $X^2$ test, Lamda, t-test, ANOVA, Sheffe and Pearson correlation with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Result: For male students, undifferentiated role identity type, 36.5%, was the most common but for female students, an androgynous role identity type, 39.3%, was most common. The sexual attitude score according to gender role identity type was 2.9 for the undifferentiated type as the highest score. Of both male and female students, the highest sexual attitude score was the undifferentiated type. Sexual attitude according to general characteristics for male students had a significant difference in major field of study and height and for female students weight. Sexual attitude was significantly related to age, height and weight. Conclusion: These results suggest that gender role identity and sexual attitudes are different between the sexes. This study result contributes to providing basic data for sex education and nursing interventions for college students.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine cognition about harmful use of alcohol among female university students. Methods: The data were collected by questionnaire from the 389 female university students. The analysis of the data was used by SPSS program(ver. 18.0). Technical statistics analysis was used in general characteristics and drinking related characteristics and drinking related cognition of objects. Logistic regression was used in factors affecting on cognitive degree of drinking evil. Results: Cognitive degree of drinking evil was low as more drinking related outlay expenses and was low as more moderation in drinking and publicity experience. Conclusions: University and the government authorities must consider the seriousness and importance of the problem and enforce moderation in drinking and publicity for female university students and develop education program and prepare the publicity material.
This study was conducted to assess food safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media reports. To accomplish this, a survey was conducted to investigate the reliability, of primary mass-media sources on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy(BSE) as well as the preferences of college students. The most common sources of media consumed by male and female students were terrestrial television(TV)(60%), the internet(21%), and newspapers(11%) and terrestrial TV(60%), newspapers (18%), and the internet(17%), respectively. The preferences for media of major and non-major students were terrestrial TV(64%), newspapers(17%), and the internet(14%) and terrestrial TV(51%), the internet(22%), and newspapers(19%), respectively. The reliability of media as viewed by male students were as follows: terrestrial TV(53%) and the internet(40%), whereas for female students, these values were terrestrial TV(55%) and the internet(37%). The reliability of media as viewed by major and non-major students was as follows: terrestrial TV(67%) and the internet(28%), and terrestrial TV(44%) and the internet(44%), respectively. In the case of male students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(54%) and the internet(38%), whereas for female students, the primary sources were terrestrial TV(57%) and internet (37%). In the case of major students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(52%) and the Internet(40%), and for non-major students, the internet(47%) and terrestrial TV(39%). Both male and female students were found to have less knowledge regarding prions, SRM(Specified Risk Materials), MM(methionine-methionine) type genes, and cow above 30 months associated with BSE compared to the other factors associated with this disease. The BSE-related knowledge held by major and non-major students was revealed unknown more than the majority of responses. Based on these results, greater effort should be made to provide meaningful information to improve the food-safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media.
The purpose of this study was to compare health practice and health status college students according to sex. The data consisted of a random sample of 743 students (388 males and 355 females) at 4 colleges in Pohang city. The analytic methods for the study were chi-square analysis and an odds ratio analysis. The results were as follows: 1. The most prevalent religious group was protestant (35.7%). The most prevalent monthly income of parents was 100-200 million won. The educational level of the father was college level or more for 60% of the samples for the mother, 70% was a high school graduate or more. 2. As far as health practice female students practiced better health than male students concerning smoking while male students practiced better health than female students in exercise and BMI(Pdv.001). 3. Odds ratio (OR) of the female students to the male students for BMI (odds ratio=0.30), exercise(odds ratio=0.15), alcohol drinking (odds ratio=O.69) were all significantly smaller than 1. On the other hand, ORS for smoking was significantly greater than 1. 4. A good health pratice score(5-7) were 38.1% in male students and 26.9% in female students. 5. Health pratice had a statistically significant association with physical well-being among male students. OR of the bad health pratice for physical well-being (OR=1.59) was significantly greater than 1.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting on depression among female middle school students. Methods: A survey was conducted on 217 first and second grade female middle school students in C city. Participants' general characteristics, home environment, level of depression, paternal, maternal, peer attachment, school adjustment were measured by self-reporting questionnaire. With SPSS 18.0 program, measured variables were analyzed and compared using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ post hoc test, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The level of depression among female middle school students were higher among students with lower economic status, second in birth order, and second grade in school. The level of depression was negatively associated with the level of paternal attachment (r=-.522), maternal attachment (r=-.487), peer attachment (r=-.376), relationship with teachers in school adjustment (r=-.274), relationship with friends in school adjustment (r=-.378), classroom behavior (r=-.450), school regulation (r=-.267). About 42% of depression among female middle school students were explained by paternal attachment, relationship with friends in school adjustment, and classroom behavior. Conclusion: Paternal attachment was identified as the most influencing factor on depression among female middle school students. Encouraging paternal involvement in the process of school adjustment might be a useful intervention to decrease depression among middle school girls.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether neck circumference might be correlated with other obesity indices and to determine the neck circumference cutoff level for obesity in female college students. Method: The data were obtained by measuring other anthropometric indices including BMI and neck circumference from 325 female college students in J city, Chungbuk Province. Receiver Operating Characteristic curve(ROC curve) analysis was used to find the optimal neck circumference cutoff level against BMI $25kg/m^2$. Results: The mean BMI was $21.4kg/m^2$, and the prevalence of obesity was 12.6%. Neck circumference was significantly correlated with body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist to hip ratio, % body fat, triceps skinfold thickness, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Neck circumference of 31.95cm was the best cutoff level for determining female students with a BMI over $25kg/m^2$, and the characteristic was acceptable with 97.6% sensitivity and 85.6% specificity. Conclusions: Neck circumference was strongly correlated with the other conventional obesity indices. Female college students with neck circumference over 31.95cm require an additional evaluation of obesity.
