A 5 kg/hr scale integral dual fluidized-bed gasifier for producing medium heating value syngas from biomass or combustible wastes was manufactured. The effect of operating variables including gasification temperature, rate of feeding, and weight ratio of steam/feed on the behavior of the gasifier was investigated. The contents of $H_2$ and CO in syngas, flow rate of feeding, cold gas efficiency increased with the increased gasification temperature or rate of feeding, but decreased with the increased weight ratio of steam/feed within the experimental range. With wood powder as the feed, the concentrations of $H_2$ and CO in the syngas were as high as 41% and 32%, and the cold gas efficiency and lower heating value of the syngas were as high as 70.1% and $3,428kcal/Nm^3$. With food wastes as the feed, the concentrations of $H_2$ and CO in the syngas were as high as 37% and 23.9%, and the cold gas efficiency and lower heating value of the syngas were as high as 66.7% and $3,670kcal/Nm^3$.

To investigate the effect of the unsaturated plant oil on the normal liver and lipid metabalism rats were fed the daily dose of 1.57ml/kg body weight of perilla oil (Iodine value 190~207), corn oil (Iodine value 115~130) and olive oil (Iodine value 80~85) respectively for 28 days. The results were as follows. For the 14 days the test groups showed normal weight gain with 7.86~20.89% increase rate. In the period of the 3rd and the 4th week the increase rate of the perilla oil group was decreased significantly under 17.53~13.8% of control level, but the remainders(corn oil, olive oil) keep normal. The feeding of corn and olive oil for 28 days did show any harmful effect on normal GOT, GPT activity, ALK-P, serum cholesterol and serum triglyceride value of rat. The perilla oil feeding for 21~28 days slightly increased the GOT, GPT activity as 174.87, 93.46u but decreased the cholesterol and triglycerids value as 54.6~0.36mg/dl compared to control. In the pathological finding of test group liver some rats in 28 days feeding group showed reactive vesicula nuclei in corn oil group and mild fatty metamorphosis in olive oil group. But most subjects did not show any characterized sign of acute or subacute liver damage.
The present study was conducted to evaluate feeding value of brown rice in Korean native beef steers (Hanwoo) fed concentrates and orchardgrass hay (50:50 on a wet basis) as a basal diet. Either 50% or 100% of corn in concentrates was substituted for brown rice, and ruminal fermentation characteristics, in situ degradability of feeds and in vivo digestibility of concentrate were investigated. The digestibility and nutritive values of corn and brown rice feeds were similar, whereas rumen degradability of brown rice was higher than that of corn. Compared with corn-based diets, the brown rice substitution decreased (P<0.05) ruminal NH3-N concentration, but did not affect rumen pH. Total volatile fatty acid content in ruminal digesta for the corn based diet was higher than those for the brown rice-contained diets. The brown rice substitution increased (P<0.05) the ratio of ruminal acetic acid to propionic acid (A/P) compared with corn-contained diets.Present results indicate that corn might nutritionally be substituted for brown rice as cattle feeds. In addition, we expect that relatively high A/P with brown rice may produce affirmative effects in rumen physiological aspect, particularly under the grain based feeding system for beef cattle in Korea.
The objectives of this study were to examine calpain activity and meat tenderness by three different feeding patterns in Korean native cattle (KNC). Total forty-five animals were assigned each fifteen in long term restriction feeding (LTFR), long-term restriction feeding and hormone treatment (LTFR-tH), and short term non-restriction feeding (STFNR), respectively. Concentrate was restricted based on body weight in exp 1 and 2. However, it was fed ad libitum in exp. 3. Hormonal implantation was made with $M-PO^{TM}$ for bulls and with $F-TO^{TM}$ for heifers at 18, 20, 22 months of age in exp. 2. Animals were purchased (3-5 month old) from local cattle market and managed in two local farms and university research unit at three different years. Animals were slaughtered at 24 months for long-term trial and at 18 month for short term-trial. Loin and tender loin muscle was used for calpain activity and meat quality. Calpain proteolytic system was not changed by treatment. However, calpastatin activity was low in short-term trial. The calpain and calpastatin activity is reciprocal relationship, therefore, the high calpain activity may effect on quality grade. The shear force value was decreased as the processing of aging after postmortem. On the other hand, the cooking loss was significantly higher in short-term than in long-term trial, and then gradually decreased by the aging. Hormone implants to increase meat yield influenced to calpastatin activity more powerfully than calpain activity to meat tenderness. In meat color-a*, there was not significant difference in loin. Meat color-b* was decreased as postmortem aging time increased in tenderloin. Western blots were done to learn whether these proteins are degraded during postmortem storage and whether this degradation temporally parallels the decrease of shear force value. Vinculin was detected at 0 day and 1 day and degraded after 3 day. In conclusion, Calpain activity was affected slightly on meat tenderness. But meat tenderness was influenced by calpastatin, more effectively.
Nematode fauna in Dokdo island was investigated for two years between 2008 and 2009. Population density and biomass were $239,500m^2$ (26,000-836,000) and $103.9mg/m^2$ (3.0-388.6), respectively. Total of 31 species of nematodes were identified : Acrobeloides is the most important genus with prominence value (PV) of 117.8, followed by Rhabditidae (PV = 81.9), Prismatolaimus (PV = 39.0), and Aphelenchoides (PV = 31.4). Among feeding group, bacteriovorus nematode composed 77% of density and 62% of biomass followed by plant-parasitic and fungivorus nematodes. A species of Pratylenchus having distinctive tail terminus is under study as a new species. Biological indices, Shannon and Wiener index (2.46), Simpson's diversity index (0.86), Species evenness (0.73), Species richness (1.30) indicate that nematode fauna in Dokdo island is diverse and unique. This study may give a general idea of nematode fauna at the Dokdo island.

Background: Rice bran is a by-product of the rice-milling process, which remains largely underutilized; however, efficient processing treatments may improve its feeding value for chickens. This is of great economic and environmental importance, as this can lower the production costs, and offer an opportunity for valorization of a low-quality agricultural by-product, to a high-value feed source. Methods: This experiment was conducted to study the effect of extruded rice bran on performance and phosphorous (P) bioavailability in broiler chickens. In a completely randomized design, 200 seven-day-old broilers (Cobb 500) were allotted to five treatments with five replicates per treatment and 8 chicks per replicate, and fed with their respective diet during the starter (8 to 21 days) and grower (22 to 42 days) periods. Diets were a basal corn-soybean based diet (T1), or diets containing 20 % rice bran (T2), 30 % rice bran (T3), 20 % extruded rice bran (T4), or 30 % extruded rice bran (T5). Results: Birds feeding on T4 and T5 diets had a higher body weight gain and lower feed-to-gain ratio compared to those feeding on T2 and T3 diets (p < 0.05). Birds receiving diets containing extruded rice bran had higher total P availability and tibia ash content, as compared with those receiving diets containing un-extruded rice bran (p < 0.05). Relative weight of the pancreas was higher in birds receiving T2 and T3 diets. Conclusions: The results confirmed the beneficial effect of extrusion treatment of rice bran on performance and P availability in broilers. Up to 30 % extruded rice bran may be included in the broiler diet without apparent adverse effects on the performance.

The oblong rockfish, Sebastes oblongus has recently drawn attention from aquaculturists because of its marketable value and tolerance against winter water temperature in the southern coastal waters of the Korean peninsula. In the study of temperature effect on growth, water temperature $16^{\circ}C$ showed best growth. The upper temperature of the fish showed feeding activity was $27^{\circ}C$ over which the fish showed no longer feeding activity. Stocking density was also a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of the juvenile fish. The best growth was in the density of 200 juveniles/L, while the highest survival was in the density of 100 juveniles/L. A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding frequency on growth and survival. A feeding scheme of twice a day was good enough in the sense of growth, survival, and economy. These results indicate that parameters such as water temperature, density, tank size and feeding frequency are consideration for best seed production of the fish.
A feeding trial was conducted to investigate effect of three paprika levels (0%, 5% and 10%) with two lipid levels (4% and 10%) in diets on growth performance and skin coloration of red- and white-colored fancy carp, Cyprinus carpio var. koi. Two replicate groups (an average body weight of $4.3{\pm}0.2g$) of fish fed one of eight experimental diets for 8 weeks. Survival, weight gain and feed efficiency of the fish were not significantly affected by both dietary paprika and lipid levels (P>0.05). After 8 weeks feeding period, the values of $a^*$, $L^*$ and $b^*$ of fish skin were significantly changed by dietary paprika level (P<0.05) but not lipid level. The $a^*$ value of fish fed the diets containing paprika was higher than that of fish fed control diet (P<0.05). Additional inclusion of 50-100 ppm canthaxanthin in diets containing 5% and 10% paprika did not improve $a^*$ value of fish skin. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that dietary inclusion of 5% paprika powder could increase the redness of red- and white-colored fancy carp fingerling.
Effects of feeding seven strains of Lactobacillus spp. on the level of cell glutathione sulphydryl (GSH) in spleen, liver and erythrocyte of the ICR mice and on the level of immunoglobulin M in the spleen were determined. The level of cell glutathione sulphydryl in the spleen was dependent on the strain of Lactobacilli, it was significantly higher in the mice fed with L. casei CU 001, L. rhamnosus CU 02, L. acidophilus NCFM and L. casei YIT9018 (p>0.05). The level of cell glutathione sulphydryl in the liver increased in the mice fed with L. casei YIT9018, L. acidophilus NCFM, L. casei CU 001 (p>0.05), the level of glutathione sulphydryl of the erythrocyte showed significantly higher value than control mice when fed with L. acidophilus NCFM, L. casei YIT9018, L. casei CU 001 (p>0.05). The level of immunoglobulin M in the spleen of ICR mice expressed as the plaque count revealed significantly higher value than the control mice when fed with L. casei CU 001, L. acidophilus NCFM and L.casei YIT 9018.
Among edible insects, black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), and common housefly (Musca domestica) have been considered as an alternative protein source for pigs. Because they are easy to breed and grow in the organic wastes, and they have well-balanced nutritional value as a protein source for pigs. The black soldier fly larvae and mealworm could replace the fish meal in the diets for weaned pigs without adverse effects on growth performance and nutrient digestibility. Black soldier fly could also be included in the finishing pig's diet without any negative effects on the growth performance and pork quality of the market pigs. Insect products showed a greater standardized ileal digestibility value of amino acids than conventional animal proteins in growing pigs. Due to the limited amount of insect products used for pig feeding study, most previous pig studies have been conducted in weaned pigs. Thus, further study is needed about the optimal inclusion level of insect products in every phase diet from weaned pigs to sows. The use of insect products in swine diets has some challenges in terms of cost, supply, and safety. Lastly, intrinsic differences among insect species, processing method, and feeding phase should be taken into consideration for the use of insect products in the swine diets.
