The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feed processing and feeding methods on growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs. A total of 72 pigs (LYD, 22.24 kg BW) were employed for a 90-d feeding trial. Treatments were 1) mash dry feeding (MD), 2) mash wet feeding (MW), 3) pellet dry feeding (PD), and 4) extruded pellet dry feeding (EPD). Corn, soybean meal and wheat bran in the basal diets were extruded before mixing and pelleting for EPD diet production. Ileal or fecal digestibility and carcass traits including lean meat percentage and weights of stomach ulcer were also examined. During the growing period, pigs fed PD showed improved (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion (F/G) over those fed MD, whereas no significant differences in average daily feed intake (ADFI) were found among dietary treatments. Finisher pigs fed MD showed lover, but not significant, ADG and F/G than those fed MW, PD or EPD. For the overall period, pigs fed PD grew faster (p < 0.05) than those fed MD or EPD. Feed intake was different between the two feeding methods (MD vs MW), and between the two processed feeds (PD vs EPD). The digestibility of crude fat was higher (p < 0.05) in pigs fed EPD than in pigs fed mash feeds. NFE digestibility of EPD treatment was also higher (p < 0.05) than that of PD. Back fat (10th rib area) was thicker (p < 0.05) tn pigs fed MD than in pigs fed EPD. other carcass traits including incidence of esophagogastric ulcers were not different among treatments. In conclusion, pelleting appeared to bo the desirable processing methods and wet feeding could also be recommended for growing-finishing pigs.
We researched effects of growth on initial inoculum size, liquid volume, and medium feeding rate etc. Cell suspension inoculated at low cell concentrations showed a typical growth reduction, whereas root cultures showed an improvement in growth. In this paper, Hairy roots showed high growth rate at 0.4 % inoculum size and 100 mL liquid volume in 250 mL flask cultures.
Recent developments of Laser metal 3D deposition with wire feeding are reviewed which provide an alternative to powder feeding method. The wire feeding direction, angle and position as well as laser power, wire feeding rate, and deposition speed are found to be key parameters to make quality deposition with high throughput. When compared with the powder feed, the wire feed shows higher material efficiency, higher deposition rate, and smoother surface. Large elongated columnar grains which have epitaxial growth across deposit layers are observed in deposit cross sections. The growth direction is parallel to the thermal gradient during the deposit process. Tensile properties are found to be dependent on the direction due to the anisotropic deposit property. A real-time feedback control is demonstrated to be effective to improve the deposition stability.

To minimize the damage caused by summer season such as high temperature and red tide, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding and starvation on the survival rate, growth, growth restoration and physiological response of red seabream Pagrus major which were reared in marine net cage ($6m{\times}6m{\times}6m$). The feeding group was fed throughout the experiment for 10 weeks, whereas starvation group was not fed for 6 weeks and subsequent refeeding for 4 weeks. Survival rates of feeding and starvation groups were 94.4% and 98.1% respectively. The growth rate of starvation group was significantly lower than feeding group during starvation period, but recovered rapidly after feeding. The nutritional status such as albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, triglyceride also showed similar tendency to the growth data. Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were higher in the feeding group than the starvation group during starvation period. Aspartate aminotransferase, glucose and total cholesterol were rapidly increased at the same time (in 5 week) in feeding group, whereas starvation group did not significant difference during starvation period. It was shown that the feeding group is more sensitive to stress than the starvation group. Thus, starvation can be applied as a rearing management plan of net cage fish farm in summer season.

A $3{\times}2$ factorial experiment was conducted to investigate effects of water temperature and feeding rate on growth and body composition of olive flounder. Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 118 g) fed a extruded pellet (55% protein and 4708 cal/g) to satiation and at restricted feeding rates of 0.25 and 0.4% body weight per day (BW/d) at the different water temperatures (13 and $18^{\circ}C$) for 9 weeks. Weight gain increased significantly with increase in feeding rates at each temperature. Weight gain of fish fed to satiation was significantly higher at 18 than $13^{\circ}C$, whereas, that of fish fed at 0.25 and 0.4% BW/d were significantly or slightly lower at 18 than $13^{\circ}C$. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed to satiation were not significantly different between 13 and $18^{\circ}C$, but those of fish fed at 0.25 and 0.4% BW/d were significantly higher at 13 than $18^{\circ}C$. The major finding of this study is that satiation feeding is efficient for optimal growth and feed efficiency of grower oliver flounder (116-164 g) in suboptimal water temperatures. The maintenance feeding ration which is zero growth performance, were 0.30 and 0.41% BW/day at 13 and $18^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the restricted feeding regime, compromised growth of fish were worsen in higher water temperature ($18^{\circ}C$ vs. $13^{\circ}C$). It might be related to high metabolic rate of fish that spend more energy for maintenance metabolism. Based on these results, we suggest that a satiation feeding regime is recommended for a productive growth of grower olive flounder in the suboptimal temperature.
This study investigated the effects of stocking density and feeding frequency (three and five times per week) on the growth of Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus. In the first experiment, experimental groups of fish (mean weight $167.8{\pm}41.4\;g$) were reared at three stocking densities (4, 8 and 12 kg/$m^3$) for 16 weeks. The total weight gain was 17.8, 17.1 and 35.4% at 4, 8 and 12 kg/$m^3$, respectively. The specific growth rates, survival rates and feeding efficiency increased with the density, but there were no significant differences (P>0.05). The daily feed intake decreased as the stocking density increased, whereas the condition factors increased with the stocking density (P<0.05). In the second experiment, groups of fish ($194.1{\pm}68.3\;g$) were fed either three or five times a week. The total wight gain was 14.4 and 18.5% for the fish fed three and five times per week, respectively. The specific growth rates of Pacific cod fed to satiation increased with the feeding frequency, although the difference was not significant (P>0.05). The survival rates, daily feed intake, feed efficiency, and condition factors of the Pacific cod were not significantly different (P>0.05). Based on these results, the optimum stocking density for juvenile cod is above 12 kg/$m^3$, and the best feeding frequency is three times a week, under the conditions used in this experiment.
This study was conducted to provide the basic information for nursing intervention in infant teach. ing and feeding situation. The subjects were 30 pairs of mother and her infant(9 month) who were normally delivered at 3 university hospital in Seoul area. The data collection was conducted by observation using videotaperecord from September 27, 1989 to Feburary 26, 1990 in their home. The measulsement tools used by this researcher were Nursing child Assessment Teaching scale (NCATS) and Nursing child Assessment Feeding Scale(NCAFS) which was developed by Barnard. The higher sum of "yes" score means the higher mother-infant interaction level. Mother-Infant interaction behaviors in both sitution were based on 6 subcategories; sensitivity to cue, response to distress, social-emotional growth fostering, cognitive growth 'fostering, clarity of + cues, and responsiveness to parent. The data collected through above method were analyzed by mean and t-test and the results were as follows. 1. The sum of maternal behavior score was 40.2 out of 50.0 in teaching situation and 37.9 out of 50.0 in feeding situation. Out of the 4 subcategories on maternal behavior in both situation, the highest subcategory was shown by response to infant's distress and the lowest subcategory by cegnitive growth fostering. 2. The sum of infant behavior score was 14.7 out of 23 in teaching situation and 17.9 out of 26 in feeding situation. Out of the 2 categories on infant behavior in both situation, the highest sub categroy was shown by the clarity of infant's cue in both situation. 3. There was a statistical significance between father's educational level and mother-infant interaction in teaching situation; college group was higher than high school group, particulary in category of sensitivity to infant's cue and congnitive growth fostering. 4. There was a statistical significance in teaching situation between mother's educational level and mother-infant interaction;college group was higher than high school group, particulary sensitivity to infant cue, social-emotional growth fostering and cognitive fostering. 5. There was no statistical difference in between parent educational level and mother.infant interaction in feeding situation.situation.
The main objective of this study is to examine genetic changes in growth rate and carcass composition traits in group housed, ad libitum fed pigs, from lines of Large White divergently selected over four years for high and low post-weaning daily gain on a fixed but restricted ration. Genetic parameters for production and carcass traits were also estimated by using average information-restricted maximum likelihood applied to a multivariate individual animal model. All analyses were carried out on 1,728 records of group housed ad libitum fed pigs, and include a full pedigree of 5,324 animals. Estimates of heritability (standard errors in parentheses) were 0.11 (0.04) for lifetime daily liveweight gain (LDG), 0.13 (0.04) for daily carcass weight gain (CDG) and 0.28 (0.06) for carcass backfat (CFT). Genetic correlations between LDG and CDG were highly positive and between LDG and CFT negative, suggesting that selection for lifetime daily gain under commercial conditions of group housing with ad libitum feeding would result in favourable improvement in carcass traits. CFT showed negative genetic correlations with CDG. Correlated genetic responses evaluated as estimated breeding values (EBVs) were obtained from a multivariate animal model-best linear unbiased prediction analysis. After four years of divergent selection for 6 week post-weaning growth rate on restricted feeding, pigs performance tested on ad libitum feeding in groups exhibited changes in EBVs of 6.77 and -9.93 (g/d) for LDG, 4.25 and -7.08 (g/d) for CDG, and -1.42 and 1.55 (mm) for CFT, in the high and low lines, respectively. It is concluded that selection for growth rate on restricted feeding would significantly improve genetic performance and carcass composition of their descendants when group housed and ad libitum fed as is a common commercial practice.
To investigate the effect of repeated food deprivation and refeeding on the hyperphagia, compensatory growth, feed efficiency, body composition, hepatosomatic index (HSI), and survival rate of the juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, an experiment was conducted for 90 days. Feeding treatments consisted of the following five regimes for 90 days from August to October, 2005: C: daily satiation feeding (control), S1: 1-day satiation feeding after 1-day food deprivation, S2: 1-day satiation feeding after 2-day food deprivation, S3: 1-day satiation feeding after 3-day food deprivation and S4: 1-day satiation feeding after 4-day food deprivation, respectively. Although the monthly feed intake (MFI) of the control was significantly higher than that of all of the starved groups, the daily feed intake (DFI) was more higher in S1, S2, and S3 than that in the control as a result of hyperphagia after starvation. While the feed efficiency in the summer (to day 30) decreased in all of the starved groups with prolongation of the starvation period, the feed efficiency in the autumn (to day 90) was increased with prolongation of the starvation period. The whole body proximate composition and HSI were also affected by starvation. The crude protein, lipid, and HSI decreased with prolongation of the starvation period, whereas the crude ash and moisture increased. The growth rate and condition factor also decreased in proportion to the starvation period. The survival rate was highest in the control and was the lowest in S4. In this study, although hyperphagia occurred in the deprived groups, we knew that the compensatory growth did not always occur.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of pineapple cannery by-product (PCB) level on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing Hanwoo steers. Methods: The feeding stage was divided into early and late finishing stages. A total of 60 castrated Hanwoo steers (13.9±0.8 months old, 418.8±36.5 kg initial body weight [BW]) were blocked by initial BW and then randomly allotted into 12 pens (five head/pen). The pens were randomly assigned to control (CONT), low PCB (LPCB), or high PCB (HPCB) treatments. These diets contained 0%, 1.5%, or 3.0% of PCB (on a dry matter [DM] basis; as-fed basis was 0%, 10.6%, or 21.2%), respectively. Results: For the early finishing stage, body weight gain (BWG) and average daily gain (ADG) of the CONT and LPCB feeding groups were greater (p<0.05) than those of the HPCB feeding group. In addition, there were linear and quadratic effects on BWG and ADG with increasing dietary PCB level (p<0.05). The gain to feed (G:F) ratio tends to quadratically decrease with an increasing PCB level in the early finishing stage (p = 0.076). Growth performances of late finishing stage were not affected by PCB level. The marbling score of the LPCB feeding group was similar to that of the CONT feeding group. However, there was a linear decrease (p< 0.05) in marbling score and quality grade among treatments as PCB was increased in the diet. In the longissimus muscle free amino acid profile, histidine composition increased linearly (p<0.05) with an increasing level of PCB. Conclusion: The level of PCB 1.5% DM in diet can be used for finishing steers without any adverse effects on growth and carcass performances. However, there were some negative effects on growth and carcass performance in the HPCB feeding group.
