It is widely accepted that the SED of a galaxy relates to its morphology. In addition, the SED of the galaxy is closely connected to its star formation history, and its morphological properties are affected by the merger history, interactions with its environment, and the gravitational instability of its dynamical system. Thus, it is likely that star formation history correlates to the elements that determine morphological properties. Among the elements, this study investigates how much the merger histories of galaxies influence their star formation histories. By using simple merger trees and semi-analytic models, which disregard feedback processes to exclusively identify merger effects on star formation histories, we examine the relation between various merger histories and SEDs of galaxies. From the results, we discuss whether the SED of a galaxy can represent and constrain its merger history.

Observations suggest the star formation in nuclear rings of barred galaxies proceeds episodically in time and sometimes asymmetrically in space. Existing theories and numerical simulations suggest that the episodic star formation is perhaps due to either supernova feedback combined with fluid instabilities or time-varying mass inflow rate. However, it has been challenging to discern what dominates in shaping the star formation history because the effects of the inflow and feedback are blended in global simulations of nuclear rings. To understand their effects separately, we construct semi-global models of nuclear rings, which treat the mass inflow rate as a model parameter. By running simulations with the inflow rates kept constant or oscillating in time, we find that the star formation rate (SFR) of the rings varies coherently with the inflow rate, while the feedback is responsible only for stochastic fluctuations of the SFR within a factor of two. The feedback instead plays an important role in maintaining the vertical dynamical equilibrium and setting the depletion time. While the asymmetry in the inflow does not necessarily lead to the asymmetry in the star formation, we find that the rings undergo a transient period of lopsided star formation when the inflow rate of only one dust lane is suddenly increased.

A real-time hourly operation model for the flood control of Soyanggang Dam and Hwachon Dam, which are located in the North Han River is developed. The method is based on simulation with a feedforward-feedback control. The feedforward control was mainly concerned with providing the release history from the single dams. The outflows from the single dam operation rules with forecasted inflows were used as the inputs to simulation. And then feedback control is applied to reduce the peak discharge at the junction. Also, sensitivity analysis of the operation model was provided to respect the temporal and spatial distribution of storms to the model.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a visual feedbackbased balance training, using force platform biofeedback, on the postural balance of elderly faller. Methods: Fifty one community-dwelling older adults (aged 66-88 years) with a recent history of fall participated in the study. Participants were randomized to an experimental group (EG, n=25) and to a control group (CG, n=26). The EG participated in training sessions three times/week for 6 weeks. Visual feedbackbased balance training with the a computerized force platform with visual feedback screen was used in the experimental group. Static balance (center of gravity) and dynamic balance (Functional reach test, Timed "Up & Go" test, Berg balance scale) were assessed before and after end of training. Results: A significant improvement in static balance and dynamic balance were demonstrated within the EG (p<.05), but not in the CG. Conclusion: Visual feedback-based balance training may be an effective intervention to improve postural balance of elderly fallers.

Dwarf galaxies are the most abundant objects in the universe. Hence, understanding the dwarfs is important but relatively little is known due to the lack of computing power and limitations in the telescope resolution. We thus use the state-of-the-art NewHorizon simulation, which is a set of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, to dissect the quenching mechanism working on dwarf galaxies by inspecting the star formation and mass history of individual galaxies. It is known that internal (AGN, SN, stellar feedback) and external (major and minor mergers, ram pressure stripping, strangulation) mechanisms affect the quenching of dwarfs. Because of the combination of these mechanisms, periodicity in the star formation history of the dwarf galaxies is expected. To check for their periodicity, Fourier transform was performed on the star formation history. By comparing the physical timescales and the periodicity, we determine the dominant effect working on the dwarfs. Then, we compare the dominant effects working on the galaxies according to their varying properties.
Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) was first formally established in the Korea in 1981. Subsequently there has been a rapid growth in EIA activity, and over one hundred fifty environmental impact statements are now published in Korea each year. Although EIA now has almost 20 years of history in the Korea, elsewhere the development of roles and practice is more recent. Development is moving apace in many countries, including the Japan and the EU Member States. Such progress has not been without its problems, and a number of the current issues in EIA-scope of the assessment, the relative roles, the quality of assessment and monitoring and auditing after decision, and so on- are highlighted. So the purpose of this article is to reform the EIA roles and process, in extending the scope of activity, and assessing effectiveness. This article suggested improving the effectiveness of project assessment, widening the scope: stretegic environmental assessment, and extending EIA to project design process, environmental monitoring and feedback system.

The study of English words in terms of etymology has a long history, going back over 110 years since Murray et al. (1884). Scholars have therefore had lots of time to gather all kind of information on the origin of English words. In fact, Modern English is the product of a long and complex process of historical developments from a great diversity of sources. The origins and development of English words meaning ‘a vessel for washing, a bath or a toilet’ are traced from Old English to the twentieth century in this paper in terms of the semantic and/or conceptual categories of the words with their particular senses. We conclude this paper with a brief discussion of how the teaching of English words can give some feedback to both teachers and students under the circumstances of English education in Korea and/or how we come to a better understanding of this charming field of English etymology in its own right.
Intelligent tutoring system enables users to effectively learn by utilizing various artificial intelligence techniques. For instance, it can recommend a proper curriculum or learning method to individual users based on their learning history. To do this effectively, user's characteristics need to be analyzed and classified based on various aspects such as interest, learning ability, and personality. Even though data labeled by the characteristics are required for more accurate classification, it is not easy to acquire enough amount of labeled data due to the labeling cost. On the other hand, unlabeled data should not need labeling process to make a large number of unlabeled data be collected and utilized. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning method based on feedback variational auto-encoder(FVAE), which uses both labeled data and unlabeled data. FVAE is a variation of variational auto-encoder(VAE), where a multi-layer perceptron is added for giving feedback. Using unlabeled data, we train FVAE and fetch the encoder of FVAE. And then, we extract features from labeled data by using the encoder and train classifiers with the extracted features. In the experiments, we proved that FVAE-based semi-supervised learning was superior to VAE-based method in terms with accuracy and F1 score.

A power-saving mechanism for smartphone devices is developed by analyzing the features of data that are received from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors devices to optimize the data processing policies. In the proposed GreenIoT architecture for power-saving in IoT, the power saving and feedback mechanism are implemented in the IoT middleware. When the GreenIoT application in the power-saving IoT architecture is launched, IoT devices collect the sensor data and send them to the middleware. After the scanning module in the IoT middleware has received the data, the data are analyzed by a feature evaluation module and a threshold analysis module. Based on the analytical results, the policy decision module processes the data in the device or in the cloud computing environment. The feedback mechanism then records the power consumed and, based on the history of these records, dynamically adjusts the threshold value to increase accuracy. Two smart living applications, a biomedical application and a smart building application, are proposed. Comparisons of data processed in the cloud computing environment show that the power-saving mechanism with IoT architecture reduces the power consumed by these applications by 24% and 9.2%.

Most hot water heating valves for apartments are constant-flow types, which limit the flow rate through an individual household for even distribution of heating water to other households. The constant-flow type is implemented by an on-off control. As a result, heating water is supplied intermittently and hence, indoor air temperature also fluctuates. Returning water temperature is also high, which reduces energy efficiency. To implement continuous feedback control, the indoor temperature dynamics was simulated to fit a measured temperature history by a state-of-the-art physical model. From the model, it was found that the most important disturbance is outdoor temperature and its effect on indoor temperature lasts about an hour. To cope with the slow response and the significant disturbance, a prediction control with proportional feedback is proposed. The control was found to be successful in implementing continuous heating water flow and improved indoor temperature control.
