Machine learning models have been widely used for landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) in recent years. The large number of inputs or conditioning factors for these models, however, can reduce the computation efficiency and increase the difficulty in collecting data. Feature selection is a good tool to address this problem by selecting the most important features among all factors to reduce the size of the input variables. However, two important questions need to be solved: (1) how do feature selection methods affect the performance of machine learning models? and (2) which feature selection method is the most suitable for a given machine learning model? This paper aims to address these two questions by comparing the predictive performance of 13 feature selection-based machine learning (FS-ML) models and 5 ordinary machine learning models on LSA. First, five commonly used machine learning models (i.e., logistic regression, support vector machine, artificial neural network, Gaussian process and random forest) and six typical feature selection methods in the literature are adopted to constitute the proposed models. Then, fifteen conditioning factors are chosen as input variables and 1,017 landslides are used as recorded data. Next, feature selection methods are used to obtain the importance of the conditioning factors to create feature subsets, based on which 13 FS-ML models are constructed. For each of the machine learning models, a best optimized FS-ML model is selected according to the area under curve value. Finally, five optimal FS-ML models are obtained and applied to the LSA of the studied area. The predictive abilities of the FS-ML models on LSA are verified and compared through the receive operating characteristic curve and statistical indicators such as sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. The results showed that different feature selection methods have different effects on the performance of LSA machine learning models. FS-ML models generally outperform the ordinary machine learning models. The best FS-ML model is the recursive feature elimination (RFE) optimized RF, and RFE is an optimal method for feature selection.
Recent advancement in data gathering technique improves the capability of information collecting, thus allowing the learning process between gathered data patterns and application sub-tasks. A pattern can be associated with multiple labels, demanding multi-label learning capability, resulting in significant attention to multi-label feature selection since it can improve multi-label learning accuracy. However, existing evolutionary multi-label feature selection methods suffer from ineffective search process. In this study, we propose a evolutionary search process for the task of multi-label feature selection problem. The proposed method creates large set of offspring or new feature subsets and then retains the most promising feature subset. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can identify feature subsets giving good multi-label classification accuracy much faster than conventional methods.
In fine-tuning-based transfer learning, the size of the dataset may affect learning accuracy. When a dataset scale is small, fine-tuning-based transfer-learning methods use high computing costs, similar to a large-scale dataset. We propose a mid-level feature extractor that retrains only the mid-level convolutional layers, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced computing costs. This mid-level feature extractor is likely to provide an effective alternative in training a small-scale medical image dataset. The performance of the mid-level feature extractor is compared with the performance of low- and high-level feature extractors, as well as the fine-tuning method. First, the mid-level feature extractor takes a shorter time to converge than other methods do. Second, it shows good accuracy in validation loss evaluation. Third, it obtains an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.87 in an untrained test dataset that is very different from the training dataset. Fourth, it extracts more clear feature maps about shape and part of the chest in the X-ray than fine-tuning method.
In this paper, we present an empirical study for improving the Korean text chunking based on machine learning and feature set selection approaches. We focus on two issues: the problem of selecting feature set for Korean chunking, and the problem of alleviating the data sparseness. To select a proper feature set, we use a heuristic method of searching through the space of feature sets using the estimated performance from a machine learning algorithm as a measure of "incremental usefulness" of a particular feature set. Besides, for smoothing the data sparseness, we suggest a method of using a general part-of-speech tag set and selective lexical information under the consideration of Korean language characteristics. Experimental results showed that chunk tags and lexical information within a given context window are important features and spacing unit information is less important than others, which are independent on the machine teaming techniques. Furthermore, using the selective lexical information gives not only a smoothing effect but also the reduction of the feature space than using all of lexical information. Korean text chunking based on the memory-based learning and the decision tree learning with the selected feature space showed the performance of precision/recall of 90.99%/92.52%, and 93.39%/93.41% respectively.
We present proofs of the stability and convergence of Self-organizing feature map (SOFM) neural network with time-invarient learning rate and binary reinforcement function. One of the major problems in Self-organizing feature map neural network concerns with learning rate-"Kalman Filter" gain in stochsatic control field which is monotone decreasing function and converges to 0 for satisfying minimum variance property. In this paper, we show that the stability and convergence of Self-organizing feature map neural network with time-invariant learning rate. The analysis of the proposed algorithm shows that the stability and convergence is guranteed with exponentially stable and weak convergence properties as well.s as well.
Machine learning (ML) is a method of fitting given data to a mathematical model to derive insights or to predict. In the age of big data, where the amount of available data increases exponentially due to the development of information technology and smart devices, ML shows high prediction performance due to pattern detection without bias. The feature engineering that generates the features that can explain the problem to be solved in the ML process has a great influence on the performance and its importance is continuously emphasized. Despite this importance, however, it is still considered a difficult task as it requires a thorough understanding of the domain characteristics as well as an understanding of source data and the iterative procedure. Therefore, we propose methods to apply deep learning for solving the complexity and difficulty of feature extraction and improving the performance of ML model. Unlike other techniques, the most common reason for the superior performance of deep learning techniques in complex unstructured data processing is that it is possible to extract features from the source data itself. In order to apply these advantages to the business problems, we propose deep learning based methods that can automatically extract features from transaction data or directly predict and classify target variables. In particular, we applied techniques that show high performance in existing text processing based on the structural similarity between transaction data and text data. And we also verified the suitability of each method according to the characteristics of transaction data. Through our study, it is possible not only to search for the possibility of automated feature extraction but also to obtain a benchmark model that shows a certain level of performance before performing the feature extraction task by a human. In addition, it is expected that it will be able to provide guidelines for choosing a suitable deep learning model based on the business problem and the data characteristics.

In this study, there are many difficulties in defining and judging creative people because there is no systematic analysis method using accurate standards or numerical values. Analyze and judge whether In the previous study, A study on the application of rule success cases through machine learning algorithm extraction, a case study was conducted to help verify or confirm the psychological personality test and aptitude test. We proposed a solution to a research problem in psychology using machine learning algorithms, Data Mining's Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining, and CRISP-DM, which were used in previous studies. After that, this study proposes a solution that helps to judge creative people by applying the feature selection algorithm. In this study, the accuracy was found by using seven feature selection algorithms, and by selecting the feature group classified by the feature selection algorithms, and the result of deriving the classification result with the highest feature obtained through the support vector machine algorithm was obtained.
Feature selection has been widely established as an efficient technique for microarray data analysis. Feature selection aims to search for the most important feature/gene subset of a given dataset according to its relevance to the current target. Unsupervised feature selection is considered to be challenging due to the lack of label information. In this paper, we propose a novel method for unsupervised feature selection, which incorporates embedded learning and $l_{2,1}-norm$ sparse regression into a framework to select genes in microarray data analysis. Local tangent space alignment is applied during embedded learning to preserve the local data structure. The $l_{2,1}-norm$ sparse regression acts as a constraint to aid in learning the gene weights correlatively, by which the proposed method optimizes for selecting the informative genes which better capture the interesting natural classes of samples. We provide an effective algorithm to solve the optimization problem in our method. Finally, to validate the efficacy of the proposed method, we evaluate the proposed method on real microarray gene expression datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method obtains quite promising performance.
