  • In the field of speech recognition, the research area can be classified into the following two categories: one which is concerned with the development of phoneme-level recognition system, the other with the efficiency of word-level recognition system. The resonable phoneme-level recognition system should detect the phonemic boundaries appropriately and have the improved recognition abilities all the more. The traditional LPC methods detect the phoneme boundaries using Itakura-Saito method which measures the distance between LPC of the standard phoneme data and that of the target speech frame. The MFCC methods which treat spectral transitions as the phonemic boundaries show the lack of adaptability. In this paper, we present new speech recognition system which uses auto-correlation method in the phonemic boundary detection process and the multi-layered Feed-Forward neural network in the recognition process respectively. The proposed system outperforms the traditional methods in the sense of adaptability and another advantage of the proposed system is that feature-extraction part is independent of the recognition process. The results show that frame-unit phonemic recognition system should be possibly implemented.

  • Objectives : In this paper, we proposed a method for selecting reliable variables from various vocal features such as frequency derivative features, frequency band ratios, intensities of 5 vowels and an intensity of a sentence, since some features are sensitive to the variation of a subject's utterance. Methods : To obtain the reliable voice variables, the coefficient of variation (CV) was used as the index to evaluate the level of reliability. Since the distributions of a few features are not Gaussian, but are instead skewed to the right or left, we transformed the features by taking the log or square root. Moreover, the definition of the variables that are suitable to represent the vocal property was explained and analyzed. Results : At first, we recorded the vowels and the sentence five times both in the morning and afternoon of the same day, totally ten recordings from each of six subjects (three males and three females). We then analyzed the CVs of each subject's voice to obtain the stable features with a sufficient repeatability. The features having less than 20% CVs for all six subjects were selected. As a result, 92 stable variables from the 222 features were extracted, which included all the transformed variables. Conclusions : Voice can be widely used to classify the four constitution types and to recognize one's health condition from extracting meaningful features as physical quantity in traditional Korean medicine or Western medicine. Therefore, stable voice variables can be useful in the u-Healthcare system of personalized medicine and for improving diagnostic accuracy.

  • As the study of the object feature detection from image, we explain methods to identify the species of the tree in forest using the picture taken from dron. Generally there are three kinds of methods, which are GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix) and Gabor filters, in order to extract the object features. We proposed the object extraction method using the statistical properties of trees in this research because of the similarity of the leaves. After we extract the sample images from the original images, we detect the objects using cross correlation techniques between the original image and sample images. Through this experiment, we realized the mean value and standard deviation of the sample images is very important factor to identify the object. The analysis of the color component of the RGB model and HSV model is also used to identify the object.

  • Jain et al. proposed the hybrid matching method which was combined the minutia-based matching method and the filter-bank based matching method. And, their experimental results proved the hybrid matching method was more effective than each of them. However, this hybrid method cannot utilize each peculiar advantage of two methods. The reason is that it gets the matching score by simply summing up each weighted matching score after executing two methods individually. In this paper, we propose new hybrid matching method. It mixes two matching methods during the feature extraction process. This new hybrid method has lower ERR than the filter-bank based method and higher ERR than the minutia-based method. So, we propose the adaptive hybrid scoring method, which selects the matching score in order to preserve the characteristics of two matching methods. Using this method, we can get lower ERR than the hybrid matcher by Jain et al. Experimental results indicate that the proposed methods can improve the matching performance up to about 1% in ERR.

  • A new classification method and recognition algorithms for printed Korean and Chinese character is studied for Korean text which contains both Korean and Chinese characters. The proposed method utilizes structural features of the vertical and horizontal vowel in Korean character. Korean characters are classified into 6 groups. Vowel and consonant are separated by means of different vowel extraction methods applied to each group. Time consuming thinning process is excluded. A modified crossing distance feature is measured to recognize extracted consonant. For Chinese character, an average of stroke crossing number is calculated on every characters, which allows the characters to be classified into several groups. A recognition process is then followed in terms of the stroke crossing number and the black dot rate of character. Classification between Korean and Chinese character was at the rate of 90.5%, and classification rate of Ming-style 2512 Korean characters was 90.0%. The recognition algorithm was applied on 1278 characters. The recognition rate was 92.2%. The densest class after classification of 4585 Chinese characters was found to contain only 124 characters, only 1/40 of total numbers. The recognition rate was 89.2%.

  • In this paper, we envisioned a multimedia object recognition system processing and combinig information from all available sources, such as 2-D, 3-D, color and sound data. Out of the overall system, we proposed 3-D information extraction and object recognition methods. Firstly, surfaces are classified by z-gradient from the range data, surface features are extracted using the intersection of normal vectors. Also feature relationship such as intersection angle and distance is established between the surfaces. Secondly, recognition is accomplished by matching process which is improtant step in the image understanding systems. Matching process is very improtant procedures because of more general and more efficient method is needed in the field of multimedia sytem. Therefore, we focused the proposal of matching process and in this article, first of all, we deal with the matching process of the 3-D object. Similarity measures are calculated.

  • The fingerprint classification of categorizing fingerprints by classes should be used in order to improve the processing speed and accuracy in a fingerprint recognition system using a large database. The fingerprint classification methods extract features from the fingerprint ridges of a fingerprint and classify the fingerprint using learning and reasoning techniques based on the classes defined according to the flow and shape of the fingerprint ridges. In earlier days, many researches have been conducted using NIST database acquired by pressing or rolling finger against a paper. However, as automated systems using live-scan scanners for fingerprint recognition have become popular, researches using fingerprint images obtained by live-scan scanners, such as fingerprint data provided by FVC, are increasing. And these days the methods of fingerprint classification using Deep Learning have proposed. In this paper, we investigate the trends of fingerprint classification technology and compare the classification performance of the technology. We desire to assist fingerprint classification research with increasing large fingerprint database in improving the performance by mentioning the necessity of fingerprint classification research with consideration for fingerprint images based on live-scan scanners and analyzing fingerprint classification using deep learning.

  • The new design methodology of prediction model and pattern classification, which is based on the dimension reduction algorithm called principal component analysis, is introduced in this paper. Principal component analysis is one of dimension reduction techniques which are used to reduce the dimension of the input space and extract some good features from the original input variables. The extracted input variables are applied to the prediction model and pattern classifier as the input variables. The introduced prediction model and pattern classifier are based on the very simple regression which is the key point of the paper. The structural simplicity of the prediction model and pattern classifier leads to reducing the over-fitting problem. In order to validate the proposed prediction model and pattern classifier, several machine learning data sets are used.

  • In many industrial applications, an unexpected fault of induction motor drive systems can cause serious troubles such as downtime of the overall system heavy loss, and etc. As one of methods to solve such problems, this paper investigates the fault diagnosis for open-switch damages in a voltage-fed PWM inverter for induction motor drive. For the feature extraction of a fault we transform the current signals to the d-q axis and calculate mean current vectors. And then, for diagnosis of different fault patterns, we propose a clustering based diagnosis algorithm The proposed diagnostic technique is a modified ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) which uses a clustering method on the premise of general ANFIS's. Therefore, it has a small calculation and good performance. Finally, we implement the method for the diagnosis module of the inverter with MATLAB and show its usefulness.
