  • This paper proposes a convolution tree kernel-based approach for relation extraction where the parse tree is expanded with entity features such as entity type, subtype, and mention level etc. Our study indicates that not only can our method effectively capture both syntactic structure and entity information of relation instances, but also can avoid the difficulty with tuning the parameters in composite kernels. We also demonstrate that predicate verb information can be used to further improve the performance, though its enhancement is limited. Evaluation on the ACE2004 benchmark corpus shows that our system slightly outperforms both the previous best-reported feature-based and kernel-based systems.

  • Usually, spatial information can be incorporated into histograms by taking histograms of a multiresolution image. For these reasons, many researchers are interested in multiresolution histogram processing. If the relation and sensitivity of the multiresolution images are well combined without loss of information, we can obtain satisfactory results in several fields of image processing including histogram equalization, specification and pattern matching. In this paper, we propose a multiresolution histogram specification method that improves the accuracy of histogram specification. The multiresolution decomposition technique is used in order to overcome the unique feature of a histogram specification affected by a quantization error of a digitalized image. The histogram specification is processed after the reduction of image resolution in order to enhance the accuracy of the results by histogram specification methods. The experimental results show that the proposed method enhances the accuracy of specification compared to conventional methods.

  • This paper introduces a selection operator which utilized similarity and fitness of individuals based on fuzzy inference. Adding similarity feature to fitness, proposed selector obtained the decrease of premature convergence and better performances than other selectors. Moreover, an adoption of steady-state evolution provided enhancement of performances additionally. Experiments of proposed method for deceptive problems were tested and showed better performances than conventional methods.

  • Graphics processing unit (GPU) is used for a faster artificial neural network. It is used to implement the matrix multiplication of a neural network to enhance the time performance of a text detection system. Preliminary results produced a 20-fold performance enhancement using an ATI RADEON 9700 PRO board. The parallelism of a GPU is fully utilized by accumulating a lot of input feature vectors and weight vectors, then converting the many inner-product operations into one matrix operation. Further research areas include benchmarking the performance with various hardware and GPU-aware learning algorithms. (c) 2004 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. • The combination of mechano-chemical activation (MCA)and Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) has widened the technical possibilities for both methods. For YBCO systems the investigation showed that a short-term MCA of initial powders before SHS leads to single-phase and ultra-fine products. A new technique for preparation ultra-fine high-temperature superconductors (HTS) of YBCO composition with a grain size d <1m is developed using combination of MCA and SHS. The specific feature of the technique is formation of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_7-$ crystalline lattice directly from an X-ray amorphous state arising as a result of mechanical activation of the original oxide mixture. The technique allows the stage of formation of any intermediate reaction products to be ruled out. X-ray and magnetic studies of ultra-fine high temperature superconductors are carried out. Dimension effects associated with the microstructure peculiarities are revealed. A considerable enhancement of inter-grain critical currents is found to take place in the ultra-fine samples.

  • We investigated the cryogenic temperature plasticity of a bulk amorphous alloy. Experiments showed that as temperature decreases, the plasticity of the alloy increases, such that the alloy exhibited ~20% of plastic strain when tested at $-196^{\circ}C$. This enhancement in the plasticity at cryogenic temperatures was associated with the formation of abundant shear bands distributed uniformly over the entire surface of the sample. Nonetheless, the serrations, the characteristic feature of the plastic deformation of amorphous alloys, were unclear at $-196^{\circ}C$. In this study, both the enhanced plasticity and the unclear serrations exhibited by the amorphous alloy at cryogenic temperatures were clarified by exploring shear banding behaviors in the context of the velocity and the viscosity of a propagating shear band.

  • This paper applies the Scan-Angle Method (SAM) to the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aboard Earth Probe (EP) satellite for determining tropospheric ozone based on TOMS scan geometry. In the northern tropical Africa burning season, the distribution of the SAM-derived tropospheric ozone presents a tropospheric ozone enhancement related to biomass burning. This distribution is consistent with that of fire counts observed from Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) and that of carbon monoxide, the tropospheric ozone precursor, observed from Measurements of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITI). However, this feature is not shown in the distribution of tropospheric ozone derived from other TOMS-based algorithms for the northern burning season. In the high latitudes, the influence of pollution in the SAM results is seen over the northern continents in agreement with carbon monoxide for northern summer when the dynamical activity is weak in the northern hemisphere.

  • The feature of six existing condensation heat transfer correlations for microfin tubes were evaluated with the consideration of vapor quality, mass flux, geometries, and various refrigerants. The Kosky and Staub [15] and the Jaster and Kosky [16] correlations for smooth tube were used for the evaluation of the heat transfer enhancement factor (EF). For the prediction of zeotropic mixtures, most correlations show discrepancy with previous measurements. The Yu and Koyama [4] and the Shikazono et al. [8] correlations do not consider spiral angle effect. The Han and Lee [10] correlation shows fin height growth deteriorates heat transfer. Experimental verification to develop reliable condensation heat transfer correlation for microfin tubes is still needed with the consideration of geometrical effects and working conditions.
