  • As recent virtual reality technologies provide a more natural three-dimensional interactive environment, users naturally learn to explore space and interact with synthetic objects. The virtual reality researcher develops a technique that realizes realistic sensory feedback to get appropriate feedback to sense input behavior. Although much recent virtual reality research works extensively consider the human factor, it is not easy to adapt to all new virtual environment contents. Among many human factors, distance perception has been treated as very important in virtual environment interaction accuracy. We study the experiential virtual environment with the feature of the virtual object connected with the real object. We divide the three-dimensional interaction, in which distance perception and behavior have a significant influence, into two types (whole-body movement and direct manipulation) and analyze the real and virtual visual distance perception heterogeneity phenomenon. Also, we propose a statistical correction method that can reduce a near-body movement and manipulation error when changing the interaction location and report the experiment results proving its effectiveness.

  • Our paper proposes a novel moving object tracking scheme for biped robot using a single camera. For walking control of a biped robot we analyze the dynamics of a three-dimensional inverted pendulum model. This analysis leads us a simple linear dynamics. And, the control parameter of the biped robot is derived from the feedback signal which converges the position of a image feature to the feature position of a desired image and the feedforward signal which compensates the motion component due to the moving object.

  • In this paper, a new block iterative algorithm is presented by using the special feature of the continuous Riccati equation in the optimal shape control. Because the real-time control require that the CPU time should be as short as possible, an appropriate modal control algorithm is sought. The computing cost is less than the one of the all state feedback control. A numerical example is given to illustrate the algorithm.

  • In this paper, to improve the retrieval Performance, an efficient combination of the MPEG-7 visual descriptors, such as the edge histogram descriptor (EHD), the color layout descriptor (CLD), and the homogeneous texture descriptor (HTD), is proposed in the framework of the relevance feedback approach. The EHD represents spatial distribution of edges in local image regions and it is considered as an important feature to represent the content of the image. The CLD specifies spatial distribution of colors and is widely used in image retrieval due to its simplicity and fast operation speed. The HTD describes precise statistical distribution of the image texture. Both the feature vector for the query image and the weighting factors among the combined descriptors are adaptively determined during the relevance feedback. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the retrieval performance significantly tot natural images.

  • In this paper, we proposes a new document summarization method using the expanded query by wikipedia and the semantic feature representing inherent structure of document set. The proposed method can expand the query from user's initial query using the relevance feedback based on wikipedia in order to reflect the user require. It can well represent the inherent structure of documents using the semantic feature by the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). In addition, it can reduce the semantic gap between the user require and the result of document summarization to extract the meaningful sentences using the expanded query and semantic features. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance than the other methods to summary document.

  • Camera-captured car plate images contain much variation and noise and the character images in a plate are typically very small. We attempted to improve the plate identification efficiency suitable for this undesirable condition. We experimented various image preprocessing and feature extracting methods and the very effective features that can compensate one feature's limitation is determined through extensive experiments. Finally two very effective features that can complement the limitations of each other feature(classifier) are determined and the efficiency is proved by recognition experiments. This approach is very necessary when handling plate character images which are typically small, various, and noisy. Individual classification result, confidence factor, region name relation and feedback verification are comprehensively considered to enhance the overall recognition efficiency. The efficiency of our method is verified by a recognition experiment using real car plate images taken from traffic roads.

  • College going students who are non-native speakers of English enrolled in English language programmes are not acquiring the needed academic writing skills. Many of these students do not have positive attitudes towards writing, thus forcing language instructors to look for ways of motivating students to write in order to improve writing skills. This action research project investigates the use of portfolio writing to improve writing ability among pre-university students. Research on the use of portfolio writing suggests that it is a useful way for developing interest in writing and for developing effective writing skills over a period of time. Portfolios support the best thinking in composition pedagogy in that it encourages process writing. Although the portfolio is considered a writing product, as a whole it is evidence of the students writing process. An important feature in using portfolios is that students are able to focus on their writing without constantly worrying about grades. Instructors have noticed that students make greater improvement in their writing when their focus is shifted from punitive feedback through letter grades to constructive feedback in the form of suggestions for further revision. This paper describes the use of writing portfolios as an effective means of teaching writing. The findings revealed that writing portfolios helped develop confidence in writing and decreased anxiety towards writing. (217 words)

  • In this paper we propose a swing-up strategy for a single inverted pendulum. The proposed method has a feature whereby can handle the input and output constraint of a pendulum in a systematic way. For the swing-up of a pendulum, we adopt a 2-DOF control structure that combines the feedforward and feedback control. In order to generate the swing-up feedforward trajectories that satisfy the input and output constraint, we formulate the problem of generating feedforward trajectories as a nonlinear optimal control problem subject to constraints. We illustrate that the proposed method is more flexible than the existing method and provides great freedom in choosing the actuator of the inverted pendulum. Through an experiment, we show that the proposed method can swing a pendulum upward effectively while satisfying all the imposed constraints.

  • Leptin, a 16-kDa cytokine, is secreted by adipose tissue in response to the surplus of fat store. Thereby, the brain is informed about the body's energy status. In the hypothalamus, leptin triggers specific neuronal subpopulations (e.g., POMC and NPY neurons) and activates several intracellular signaling events, including the JAK/STAT, MAPK, PI3K, and mTOR pathway, which eventually translates into decreased food intake and increased energy expenditure. Leptin signal is inhibited by a feedback inhibitory pathway mediated by SOCS3. PTP1B involves another inhibitory pathway of leptin. Leptin potently promotes fat mass loss and body weight reduction in lean subjects. However, it is not widely used in the clinical field because of leptin resistance, which is a common feature of obesity characterized by hyperleptinemia and the failure of exogenous leptin administration to provide therapeutic benefit in rodents and humans. The potential mechanisms of leptin resistance include the following: 1) increases in circulating leptin-binding proteins, 2) reduced transport of leptin across the blood-brain barrier, 3) decreased leptin receptor-B (LRB), and/or 4) the provocation of processes that diminish cellular leptin signaling (inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, feedback inhibition, etc.). Thus, interference of the cellular mechanisms that attenuate leptin signaling improves leptin action in cells and animal models, suggesting the potential utility of these processes as points of therapeutic intervention. Various experimental trials and compounds that improve leptin resistance are introduced in this paper.

  • A power-saving mechanism for smartphone devices is developed by analyzing the features of data that are received from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors devices to optimize the data processing policies. In the proposed GreenIoT architecture for power-saving in IoT, the power saving and feedback mechanism are implemented in the IoT middleware. When the GreenIoT application in the power-saving IoT architecture is launched, IoT devices collect the sensor data and send them to the middleware. After the scanning module in the IoT middleware has received the data, the data are analyzed by a feature evaluation module and a threshold analysis module. Based on the analytical results, the policy decision module processes the data in the device or in the cloud computing environment. The feedback mechanism then records the power consumed and, based on the history of these records, dynamically adjusts the threshold value to increase accuracy. Two smart living applications, a biomedical application and a smart building application, are proposed. Comparisons of data processed in the cloud computing environment show that the power-saving mechanism with IoT architecture reduces the power consumed by these applications by 24% and 9.2%.
