  • Objectives : To assess the test-retest reliability and the intratest repeatability in measuring the cervical range of motion of healthy subjects with wireless microelectromechanical system inertial measurement unit(MEMS-IMU) system and to discuss the feasibility of this system in the clinical setting to evaluate the cervical spine musculoskeletal. Methods : 12 healthy people who were evaluated as no- or mild-disability with neck disability index were participated. Their cervical motion were measured with IMU twice in consecutive two days for the test-retest reliability study. Intratest repeatability was calculated in the two tests separately. The calculated intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC) were discussed and compared with the those of the previous studies. Results : Cervical range of motion data were acquired and statistically processed: left rotation($61.64^{\circ}$), right rotation($65.12^{\circ}$), extension($61.98^{\circ}$), flexion($52.81^{\circ}$), left bending($39.31^{\circ}$), right bending($41.08^{\circ}$). ICCs were 0.77~0.98(intratest repeatability) and 0.74~0.93 (test-retest reliability) in the primary motion. In the coupling motion, intratest repeatability ICCs were 0.93~ 0.99(transverse primary plane), 0.88~0.97(saggital primay plane), and 0.77~0.93(coronal primary plane). Test-retest reliability of coupling motion were 0.90~0.97(transverse primary plane), 0.00~0.72(saggital primary plane), and 0.04~0.76(coronal primary plane). Conclusions : Several types of range-of-motion devices are now on use in many fields including medicine, but the practicality of the devices in clinical use is questionable for the convenient and economical aspects. In this study, we presented the reliability of cervical range of motion test with the developed wireless MEMS-IMU system and discussed its potential utility in clinical use.

  • Modeling for complex reacting flow in Fischer-Tropsch reactor is one of the challenges in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). It is hard to derive each and every reaction rate for all chemical species because Fisher-Tropsch reaction produces many kinds of hydrocarbons which include lots of isomers. To overcome this problem, after analyzing the existing methodologies for reaction rate modeling, non-Anderson-Schulz-Flory methodology is selected to model the detailed reaction rates. In addition, the inside flow has feature of multi-phase flow, and the methodologies for modeling multi-phase flow depend on the interference between the phases, distribution of the dispersed phase, flow pattern, etc. However, existing studies have used a variety of inside flow modeling methodologies with no basis or rationale for the feasibility. Modeling inside flow based on the experimental observation of the flow would be the best way, however, with limited resources we infer the probable regime of inside flow based on conventional fluid dynamics theory; select the appropriate methodology of Mixture model; and perform systematic CFD modeling. The model presented in this study is validated through comparisons between experimental data and simulation results for 10 experimental conditions.

  • In this study, analytical works for the induced winds due to traveling vehicles on highway have been conducted by Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The traveling condition was considered in two cases: (a) single direction and (b) bi-direction. The analysis was focused on the effects of the induced winds on the upper part of a median strip while the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicles were directly analyzed in the previous studies. From the analysis results, it has been found that the maximum magnitude of the induced winds was 2.2 m/s when the vehicles travel with the speed of 50 km/h. Additionally, 4.0 m/s and 5.3 m/s were obtained with the speed of 90 km/h and 120 km/h, respectively. Especially, the induced winds was generated about 84% of the vehicle speed at 1.0 m above from the median strip when the vehicles travel with the speed of 120 km/h. The induced winds was maintained during the very short period while the traveling. conclusively, it is noted that the wind power generation can be possible by using the small-sized wind power generators installed on median strips throughout the analytical results in this study.

  • This study conducts cross-comparison through verification of treatment planning of using beam spoiler and bolus, according to the dose variation of different tumor bed and metastatic lymph node cancers, against ionization and optically stimulated luminescence detectors(OSLDs), in head and neck radiotherapy. Verification of treatment planning examined the feasibility of inserting detectors through simulated solid dry water slabs under identical irradiated conditions from treatment planning system to measure beam spoiler and 0.5, 1 cm bolus. In addition, two detectors were cross-compared for verification of treatment planning accuracy and reliability within ${\pm}$2%. The study found that, given a beam spoiler thickness of 0.5 cm and beam spoiler-to-skin distance of 10 cm subjected to optimal dose distribution given for metastatic lymph node cancers, the bolus low-level skin dose was less, and the tumor bed dose reduced slightly. Additionally, two detectors were cross-compared for accuracy within ${\pm}$1%. Accordingly, The use of beam spoiler was determined that reduces skin side effects and can deliver an optimal dose distribution for tumor, and to apply to future clinical studies should be performed.

  • Since socioscientific issues (SSI) reflect various characteristics of new technologies designed to meet the incessant human needs in the contemporary society, this study explores the feasibility of adapting nature of technology (NOT) to analyze students' socioscientific decision-making. To achieve the aim, forty-five college students enrolled in a liberal arts course on science and technology studies participated in the study and responded to a GMO (golden rice) scenario in a written form. Four major viewpoints were identified from their writing: 1) is the technological artifact able to solve a societal problem?, 2) are there some alternatives to solve the societal problem?, 3) what kinds of side effects or flaws could turn up during distribution and consumption of the technological artifact?, and 4) can we cope with the technological uncertainty? We revisited the viewpoints within the NOT framework (technology as a 'fix,' cultural context and role of values, technological trade-offs, technology as a system, and technological progression). As a result, unlike NOS, NOT were quite explicitly represented in their decision-making and students' level of understanding on NOT varied. It indicates that NOT can be a promising construct for cultivating informed SSI decision-making.
