  • The sliding wear behavior of a Fe-base hardfacing alloy was investigated in the temperature range of $25∼250^{\circ}C$ under a contact stress of 15 ksi (103 MPa). The wear loss of this Alloy in pressurized water was less than that of NOREM 02. And galling did not occurred at this alloy in all temperature ranges. It was considered that the wear resistance of this Alloy was attributed to the strain-induced phase transformation from austenite to $\alpha$'martensite during sliding wear.

  • In order to develop alloy resistance in aggressive sulphat ion, the corrosion behavior of metallic glasses $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$, $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ (at %) at different concentrations of $H_2SO_4$ solutions was examined by electrochemical methods and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Microscopy (XPS) analyses. The corrosion kinetics and passivation behavior was studied. A direct proportion was observed between the corrosion rate and acid concentration in the case of $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloys. Critical concentration was observed in the case of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ alloy. The influence of the alloying element is reflected in the increasing resistance of the protective film. XPS analysis confirms that the protection film on the $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ alloy was NiS which is less protective than that formed on Cr containing alloys. The corrosion rate of $Ni_{82,3}Cr_7Fe_3Si_{4.5}B_{3.2}$ and $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$. alloys containing 7% and 13% Cr are $7.90-26.1{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/y which is lower about 43-54 times of the alloy $Ni_{92{\cdot}3}Si_{4.5}B_{32}$ (free of Cr). The high resistance of $Ni_{75.5}Cr_{13}Fe_{4.2}Si_{4.5}B_{2.8}$ alloy at the very aggressive media may due to thicker passive film of $Cr_2O_3$ which hydrated to hydrated chromium oxyhydroxide.

  • This study investigated the growth behavior and characteristics of compounds formed at the interface between a liquid Al-Si-Cu alloy and solid cast iron. Through microstructural analyses, it was observed that various AlFe and AlFeSi phases are formed at the interface, and the relative proportion of each phase changes when small amounts of strontium are added to the Al alloy. The results of the microstructural analysis indicate that the primary phases of the interfacial compounds in the Al-Si-Cu base alloy are Al8Fe2Si and Al4.5FeSi. However, in the Sr-added alloys, significant amounts of binary AlFe intermetallic compounds such as Al5Fe2 and Al13Fe4 formed, in addition to the AlFeSi phases. The inclusion of Sr has a slight diminishing effect on the rate at which the interfacial compounds layer thickens during the time the liquid Al alloy is in contact with the cast iron. The study also discusses the nano-indentation hardness and micro-hardness of the interfacial phases.

  • As a part of assessment of the structural material for the molten salt handling system, corrosion behavior of austenitic alloys, Fe-base and Ni-base in the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$ was investigated in the range of temperature; 650~$725^{\circ}C$, time; 24- 168h, $Li_2O$; 3wt%, mixed gas; Ar-10%$O_2$. In the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$, Ni-base alloys showed higher corrosion resistance than Fe-base alloys. Fe-base alloy with low Fe and high Ni contents exhibited better corrosion resistance. The scales of $Cr_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$ on Fe-base alloys were showed, and $Cr_2O_3$, $NiFe_2O_4$ on Ni-base alloys were also showed.

  • The microstructure of Al-7Si-0.4Mg-1Fe alloy mainly consists of aluminum dendrites, Al-Si eutectics, and $Al_5FeSi$ needles. When Mn was added to the alloy, the substantial amount of $Al_5FeSi$ phase was changed into Al(Mn,Fe)Si, however the needle-like morphology was almost unchanged. Combined additions of Cr or Sr with Mn to the base alloy resulted in rod-like Al(Mn, Fe,Si)Si phase. The tensile properties of as-cast alloys were enhanced by the Mn addition, especially when it was added with Sr. The tensile properties after T6 heat treatment was a little improved with 0.7%Mn addition, but Cr or Sr additions with Mn didn't show any positive effect on the properties of heat-treated alloys.

  • Nanostructured materials exhibit attractive mechanical properties that are often superior to the performance of their coarse-grained counterparts. However, one major drawback is their low ductility, which limits their potential applications. In this paper, different strategies to obtain both high strength and enhanced ductility in nanostructured materials are reported for Ti-base and Zr-base alloys. The first approach consists of designing an in-situ composite microstructure containing ductile bcc or hop dendrites that are homogeneously dispersed in a nanostructured matrix. The second approach is related to refining the eutectic structure of a Ti-Fe-Sn alloy. For all these materials, the microstructure, mechanical properties, deformation and fracture mechanisms will be discussed.

  • The growth rate equation of Fe-Zn alloy layer was represented by x = Kt, and hence the growth of alloy layer was considered to be controlled by diffusion process. The constituent of alloy layer formed on the steel surface was identified to be intermetallic compound of Fe3Zn10 and FeZn10. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of galvanized steel showed a nearly constant value at the thickness below about 30$\mu\textrm{m}$, and both properties decreased with increasing thickness above about 30$\mu\textrm{m}$. In the case of galvanied steel with a great thickness of alloy layer, crack was formed below yield point of base metal, which is considered to be attributed to the alloy layer failure.

  • Mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated on vacuum induction melted $Fe_3A1$base alloys of $DO_3$ structure. Specal emphasis were put on the effect of alloy chemistry, grain size and process(rolling, directional solidification) on mechanical properties of Fe-22.5-39at.%Al at elevated temperature between room temperature and $800^{\circ}C$. grain size of as-cast alloys is refined by rolling from 1mm to $80\mum$. Tensile strength of Fe-24.lat.%AI was about 404MPa at the critical ordering temperature, and the fracture strain of the alloy was 1-2% at room temperature. An inverse temperature dependence of the strength is noticed as-cast $Fe_3A1$. The presence of Cr and Zr do not affect the room temperature ductility and high temperature strength. Fracture strain of directionally solidified(DS) $Fe_3A1$ is about 1%at room temperature, but is about 60%at. $T_C$(550^{\circ}C)$. Tensile strength of DS alloy is lower than that of as-cast alloy at $530^{\circ}C$ and $430^{\circ}C$. Failure mode at room temperature varies from transgranular fracture to intergranular fracture with the addition of Al. the failure mode also varies from mixed(transgranular+ intergranular) mode between room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$ to intergranular mode above $550^{\circ}C$

  • An optimum route to fabricate oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic superalloy with desired microstructure was investigated. Two methods of high energy ball milling or polymeric additive solution route for developing a uniform dispersion of $Y_2O_3$ particles in Fe-Cr-Al-Ti alloy powders were compared on the basis of the resulting microstructures. Microstructural observation revealed that the crystalline size of Fe decreased with increases in milling time, to values of about 15-20 nm, and that an FeCr alloy phase was formed. SEM and TEM analyses of the alloy powders fabricated by solution route using yttrium nitrate and polyvinyl alcohol showed that the nano-sized Y-oxide particles were well distributed in the Fe based alloy powders. The prepared powders were sintered at 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in vacuum. The sintered specimen with heat treatment before spark plasma sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed a more homogeneous microstructure. In the case of sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$, the alloys exhibited densified microstructure and the formation of large reaction phases due to oxidation of Al.

  • In this study, Fe-base alloy powder was prepared by gas atomizing method. Shape and crystal structure of the powder were investigated by FESEM, X-ray diffraction, and DSC. The powder was produced in a spherical shape, with a size of 45 ~ 90 ${\mu}m$. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the powder was fully amorphous, showing typical broad amorphous peak. From DSC analysis, Tg and Tx that are generally found in a bulk amorphous alloy were also observed in the alloy powder. Tg and Tx of the powder were $530^{\circ}C$ and $560^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results suggest us that the bulk amorphous alloy (BMG) powder prepared in this study is applicable to laser welding.
