Iron (Fe) is an essential metal in biological processes, which maintains a homeostasis in the human body. Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) has been known as an iron transporting membrane protein, which is involved in the uptake Fe at the apical portion of intestinal epithelium, and may transport Fe across the membrane of acidified endosome in peripheral tissues. In this study, we studied the tissue distribution of DMT1 in the Fe supplemented (FeS) diet fed rats, and the regulation of DMT1 expression by depleting body Fe. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups, and fed FeS (120 mg Fe/kg) diet or Fe deficient (FeD, 2∼6 mg Fe/kg) diet for 4 weeks. The evaluation of body Fe status was monitored by measuring sFe, UIBC and tissue Fe concentration. Additionally, DMT1 mRNA levels were analyzed in the peripheral tissues by using the quantitative real time RT-PCR method. In the FeS diet fed rats, the tissue Fe was maintained at a relatively high level, and DMT1 was eventually expressed in all tissues studied. DMT1 was highly expressed in the testis, kidney and spleen, while a moderate levels of DMT1 expression was detected in the brain, liver and heart. In the digestive system, the highest level of DMT1 was found in the duodenum. Feeding the FeD diet caused a reduced body weight gain and depletion of body Fe with finding of decreased sFe, increased UIBC and decreased tissue Fe concentration. The depletion of body Fe upregulated DMT1 expression in the peripheral tissue. The expression of DMT1 was very sensitive to the body Fe depletion in the small intestine, especially in the duodenum, showing dramatically higher levels in the FeD rats than those of the FeS group. In the FeD diet fed animals, the expression of DMT1 was low significantly in other tissues compared with the duodenum. The expression of DMT1, however, was 60∼120% higher in the testis, kidney and spleen, and 30∼50% higher in the lung, liver and heart, compared to the FeS diet fed rats. In summary, DMT1 expression was ubiquitous in mammalian tissue, and the level of expression was the organ-dependent. The expression of DMT1 in peripheral tissues was upregulated by depletion of body Fe. Duodenum was the most sensitive tissue among organs studied during Fe depletion, and expressed the greatest level of DMT1, while other tissues were less higher than in duodenum. This study supports that DMT1 plays a role in maintaining the body Fe level through intestinal uptake as well as homeostasis of Fe in the peripheral tissue.
In a salb-preheating furnace of steel-making industry, the oxidation/degradation behavior of Cr3C2 ceramic composited dkid button reaction with scale in Fe-oxide system occurs and was thermodynamically examined. The reaction of scale with Cr3C2 skid button produces Cr3C2(s) and C(s), and Co gas is then evolved from the reaction of C(s) with Fe-scale. Cr3C2(s) from oxidation of Cr3C2(s) reacted with Fe-oxide(s) becomes high-melting chromite. The chromite acts as protection layer against further oxidation and improves resistance of the reaction of Cr3C2 skid button with Fe-scale.
Microbial Fe (III) reduction is important for the biogeochemical cycle in the sediment of freshwater system. Also, the Fe (III) reducing mechanism make a model of oxidizing organic compounds and reducing toxic heavy metals, such as chrome or uranium. Thirty-seven strains which have Fe (III) reducing activity were isolated from sediments in lake Soyang and Chunho reservoir. The initial concentration of Fe (II) was the highest in sediments of lake Soyang. However, the highest Fe (III) reducing activity was shown in Chunho reservoir. All isolates were tested for Fe (III) reducing activity. Strains C2 and C3, which were isolated from sediments of Chunho reservoir, showed the highest activity. These strains were tested to see if they utilize various electron donors such as glucose, yeast extract, acetate, ethanol and toluene. Significantly, glucose and yeast extract were used as electron donors. Also these strains were conformed to use humid acid and nitrate as electron accepters. The 16S rRNA sequences of strains C2 and C3 were closely related to Aeromonas hydrophila with 95% similarity.
As the electrodes of secondary battery are made with sulfur compounds, excellent electrode system of environmental non-toxicity, high specific energy density and low material cost can be obtained. In this study, the $FeS_2$ fine compound powders for active material in the battery were synthesized by mechanical alloying. Fine Fe-53.5 wt.%S powders of 450 nm of mean size were fabricated by mechanical alloying for 60 hours at the horizontal attritor. As the mechanical alloying time increases, particle size of Fe-53.5 wt.%S was decreased and steady state of Fe-53.5 wt.%S compound powders was obtained at 30 hours. Fe-53.5 wt.%S cathode shows the excellent discharge capacity (1011 mAh/g).
The damping property of Fe-12Cr-22Mn-X alloys has been investigated to develop high damping and high strength alloy. Particularly, the effect of the phase of austenite, alpha and epsilon martensite, which constitute the structure of the alloys Fe-12Cr-22Mn-X alloys, on the damping capacity at room temperature has been investigated. Various fraction of these phases were formed depending on the alloy element and cold work degree. The damping capacity is strongly affected by ${\varepsilon}$ martensite while the other phase, such as ${\alpha}'$ martensite, actually exhibit little effect on damping capacity. In case of Fe-12Cr-22Mn-3Co alloy, the large volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite formed at about 30% cold rolling, and in case of Fe-12Cr-22Mn-1Ti alloy, formed at about 20% cold rolling and showed the highest damping capacity. Damping capacity showed higher value in Fe-12Cr-22Mn-1Ti alloy than one in Fe-12Cr-22Mn-3Co alloy.

Car industry has required light-weight steels, but still with strong mechanical strength. To meet this requirement, a variety of researches on Fe-Al alloys have been performed. As Al is being added in a disordered manner, alloys become more ductile and show higher yield stress. At a certain concentration of Al, however, the Fe-Al alloy system falls in a second phase whose mechanical strength is worsened. To understand the microscopic role of Al, we investigate the stability and the elastic properties of various Fe-Al alloys using ab initio density functional theory. At agiven Al concentration, the equilibrium geometry is obtained among several disordered Fe-Al alloy structures by performing the geometry relaxation. The formation energies and elastic properties such as bulk moduli of the equilibrium structures are also computed as a function of Al concentration. We also investigate the effects of different elements such as Si and Mn. Fe-Si alloy systems exhibit unusual mechanical behaviors requiring further investigation to understand their physical origin. Especially, the microscopic role of Mn is investigated to find its physical origin of preventing the Fe-Al alloy system from forming an unfavorable second phase. The effect of manganese on mechanical properties of Fe-based alloys is also explored.

Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) has made a prominent progress in memory performance and has brought a bright prospect for the next generation nonvolatile memory technologies due to its excellent advantages. Dry etching process of magnetic thin films is one of the important issues for the magnetic devices such as magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs) based MRAM. CoFeB is a well-known soft ferromagnetic material, of particular interest for magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) and other devices based on tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR), such as spin-transfer-torque MRAM. One particular example is the CoFeB - MgO - CoFeB system, which has already been integrated in MRAM. In all of these applications, knowledge of control over the etching properties of CoFeB is crucial. Recently, transferring the pattern by using milling is a commonly used, although the redeposition of back-sputtered etch products on the sidewalls and the low etch rate of this method are main disadvantages. So the other method which has reported about much higher etch rates of >$50{\AA}/s$ for magnetic multi-layer structures using $Cl_2$/Ar plasmas is proposed. However, the chlorinated etch residues on the sidewalls of the etched features tend to severely corrode the magnetic material. Besides avoiding corrosion, during etching facets format the sidewalls of the mask due to physical sputtering of the mask material. Therefore, in this work, magnetic material such as CoFeB was etched in an ICP etching system using the gases which can be expected to form volatile metallo-organic compounds. As the gases, carbon monoxide (CO) and ammonia ($NH_3$) were used as etching gases to form carbonyl volatiles, and the etched features of CoFeB thin films under by Ta masking material were observed with electron microscopy to confirm etched resolution. And the etch conditions such as bias power, gas combination flow, process pressure, and source power were varied to find out and control the properties of magnetic layer during the process.
Since much studies have been performed concerning the electrochemical behaviors and the practical applications of PB based devices, little has yet reported to investigate the best condition for the preparation for PB thin films. As considered some factors(peak shape, peak current, and peak separation) from the i-V curves, the optimal condition in the film growth were investigated under various immersion solutions. An electron-transfer processes of Fe2+/Fe3+ and Fe(CN)63-/4- redox couples were considered by measuring the observed currents as a function of the rotation velocity. The standard heterogeneous electron-transfer rates for these films and bare Au disc electrode in 10-3 M Fe2+/Fe3+ solution, applied at +0.65 V vs. SCE, were 6.14 × 10-3 and 7.78 × 10-3 cm/s, respectively, obtained using a rotating disc electrode. In case of the addition of potassium ion, the rate constants for these Fe2+/Fe3+ system on thin films of PB and bare electrode were given a little high values. The electron transfer rate for 10-3 M Fe(CN)63-/4- were 4.55 × 10-3 and 6.84 × 10-3 cm/s, respectively. The conductivity as directly determined during obtained the voltammogram, was 2.2 × 10-7 (Ω·cm)-1. This value is similar magnitude to that calculated from bulk sample.
We have studied on the preparation of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00) system alloy, the characteristics of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00) system alloy by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), pressure composition temperature (PCT) curve, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the $H_2-N_2$ gas mixture separation of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00)- stainless steel (SS) composite membranes. The formation of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00) system alloys with cubic crystal same as TiCo was confirmed by X-ray diffractometer. $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00) system alloys showed the hysteresis at $120^{\circ}C$. As the Fe content of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00) system alloys increased, the hysteresis was increased both range x=0.90~1.00 and x=0.55~0.60, and the range x=0.55~0.90 gave decreased hysteresis. $TiCo_{0.55}Fe_{0.45}$ alloy was the one showed the lowest hysteresis among them. The lowest value of hydrogen permeation pressure of $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00)-SS composite membrane was $TiCo_{0.55}Fe_{0.45}$-SS composite membrane with the value of 2.5 atm at $120^{\circ}C$; otherwise, $TiCo_{0.90}Fe_{0.10}$-SS composite had the highest pressure value among the membranes with the value of 10 atm. $TiCo_{0.55}Fe_{0.45}$-SS composite membrane was the best to separate the $H_2-N_2$ gas mixture excellently among the $TiCo_xFe_{1-x}$(x=0.50~1.00)-SS composite membranes since $TiCo_{0.55}Fe_{0.45}$ had the least hysteresis, and hydrogen permeation pressure was the lowest with value of 2.5 atm.
$[Fe^{II}Fe^{III}BPLMP(OAc)_2](BPh_4)_2$ (1), a new model for the reduced form of the purple acid phosphatases, has been synthesized by using a dinucleating ligand, 2,6-bis[((2-pyridylmethyl)(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amino) methyl]-4-methylphenol (HBPLMP). Complex I has been characterized by X-ray diffraction method as having (μ-phenoxo)bis(acetato)diiron core. Complex 1 was crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with the following cell parameters: a=41.620(6) Å, b=14.020(3) Å, c=27.007(4) Å, β=90.60(2)°, and Z=8. The iron centers in the complex 1 are ordered as indicated by the difference in the Fe-O bond lengths which match well with typical $Fe^{III}-O\; and\; Fe^{II}-O$ bond lengths. Complex 1 has been studied by electronic spectral, NMR, EPR, SQUID, and electochemical methods. Complex 1 exhibits strong bands at 592 nm, 1380 nm in $CH_3CN$ (ε = 1.0 × 103 , 3.0 × 102). These are assigned to $phenolate-to-Fe^{III}$ and intervalence charge-transfer transitions, respectively. Its NMR spectrum exhibits sharp isotropically shifted resonances, which number half of those expected for a valence-trapped species, indicating that electron transfer between $Fe^{II}\;and\;Fe^{III}$ centers is faster than NMR time scale. This complex undergoes quasireversible one-electron redox processes. The $Fe^{III}_2/Fe^{II}Fe^{III}\;and\;Fe^{II}Fe^{III}/Fe^{II}_2$ redox couples are at 0.655 and -0.085 V vs SCE, respectively. It has $K_{comp}=3.3{\times}10^{12}$ representing that BPLMP/bis(acetate) ligand combination stabilizes a mixed-valence $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ complex in the air. Complex 1 exhibits a broad EPR signal centered near g=1.55 which is a characteristic feature of the antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ system $(S_{total}=1/2)$. This is consistent with the magnetic susceptibility study showing the weak antiferromagnetic coupling $(J= - 4.6\;cm^{-1},\; H= - 2JS_1{\cdot}S2)$ between $Fe^{II}\; and \;Fe^{III}$center.
