  • A new microassay was proposed for the determination of serum thiobarbituric acid(TBA) value greatly enhanced by ferric ion under anaerobic condition. One ${\mu}mole$ of $FeCl_{3}$ per $10{\mu}l$ of serum was added to the TBA reaction mixture containing serum protein precipitate. The reaction mixture was heated on boiling water-bath for 50min under $N_{2}$ flushing. The sensitivity of this assay was greatly enhanced by 40 times comparing with that of Yagi's method (1976). In favour of the enhancement, this test could be measured by colorimetry or spectrophotometry with the sample size of $10-20{\mu}l$ serum. The sensitivity and reproducibility were also improved by means of partial dehydration of the butanol extract with $(NH_{4})_{2}SO_{4}$ salting-out. Serum TBA values of healthy human at different age groups were determined by this proposed method.

  • The effect of ferrous/ferric molar ratio on the formation of nano-sized magnetite particles was investigated by a co-precipitation method. Ferrous sulfate and ferric sulfate were used as iron sources and sodium hydroxide was used as a precipitant. In this experiment, the variables were the ferrous/ferric molar ratio (1.0, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0) and the equivalent ratio (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0), while the reaction temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and reaction time (30 min.) were fixed. Argon gas was flowed during the reactions to prevent the $Fe^{2+}$ from oxidizing in the air. Single-phase magnetite was synthesized when the equivalent ratio was above 2.0 with the ferrous/ferric molar ratios. However, goethite and magnetite were synthesized when the equivalent ratio was 1.0. The crystallinity of magnetite increased as the equivalent ratio increased up to 3.0. The crystallite size (5.6 to 11.6 nm), median particle size (15.4 to 19.5 nm), and saturation magnetization (43 to 71 $emu.g^{-1}$) changed depending on the ferrous/ferric molar ratio. The highest saturation magnetization (71 $emu.g^{-1}$) was obtained when the equivalent ratio was 3.0 and the ferrous/ferric molar ratio was 2.5.

  • To investigate the effect of annealing temperature and time on the recrystallization behavior and microstructure of Zr-based alloys, the specimens of Zr-0.8Sn-0.4Nb-0.4Fe-0.2Cu, Zr-1Nb, Zircaloy-4, and unalloyed Zr were cold-worked and annealed at 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, $900^{\circ}C$ for 30 to 5000 minutes. The hardness, microstructure and precipitate of the specimens were investigated by using micro-hardness tester, optical microscope and transmission electron microscope, respectively. The recrystallization of Zr-based alloys occurred between $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. As the content of alloying elements increased, the hardness and recrystallization temperature of the alloys increased though the grain sizes after recrystallization decreased. It was supposed that the hardness of Zr-based alloy with Fe or Cu increased during recovery by the formation of Fe or Cu precipitates.

  • TiC core/(Ti,Mo)C rim structure in TiC-$Mo_2C$-Ni base cermet which is generally prepared by sintering below 145$0^{\circ}C$ had been believed to be generated by the solid diffusion of Mo atoms 1 into TiC grains (D. Moskowitz and M.Humenik, 1r.:1966). Afterward, it was clarified that the c core/rim structure is generated by solution/re-precipitation mechanism : (1) $Mo_2C$ grains and s small TiC grains dissolve into the Ni liquid, (2) the dissolved Mo, Ti and C atoms migrate to the s surface of TiC coarse grains, (3) the Mo, Ti and C precipitate on the surface of TiC coarse g grains and form (Ti,Mo)C solid solution rim, and (4) the Ostwald ripening (grain growth by s solution/re-precipitation mechanism) of TiC-core/(Ti,Mo)-rim grains continues, and thus the w width of (Ti,Mo)C rim (at the same time, the grain size) increases with sintering time, etc. ( (H.Suzuki, K.Hayashi and O.Terada: 1973). The TiC-core was found not to disappear even by s sintering at 190$0^{\circ}C$ (ibid.: 1974) Recently, FeSi core/$Fe_2Si_5$-rim structure in Fe-66.7at%Si thermoelectric aIloy was found to also h hardly shrink and disappear by long heating at an appropriate temperature (1999: M.Tajima and K K.hayashD. Then, the authors considered its cause, and clarified experimentaIly that the disappearance of FeSi-core/$Fe_2Ski_5$-rim structure could be attributed to the exhaustion of diffusion-contributable vacancies in core/rim structure (N.Taniguchi and K.Hayashi:2001). At p present, the authors and my coworker are investigating whether the non-disappearance of TiC c core can be explained also from the new hypothesis "Exhaustion of diffusion-contributable v vacancies in corelrim structure".ure".uot;.

  • Simulated waste liquid containing 50 ppm cobalt ion was treated by adsorbing colloidal flotation using Fe(III) or Al(IlI) as flocclant and a sodium lamyl sulfate as a collector. Parameters such as pH, surfactant concentration, Fe(III) or Al(III) concentration, gas flow rate, etc., W앙e considered. The flotation with Fe(III) showed 99.8% removal efficiency of cohalt on the conditions of initial cobalt ion concentration 50 ppm, pH 9.5, gas flow rate 70 ml/min, and flotation time 30 min. When the waste solution, was treated with 35% $H_2O_2$ prior to adsorbing colloidal flotation, the optimal pH for removing cobalt shifted m to weak alkaline range and flotation could be applied in wider range of pH as compared to non-use of $H_2O_2$. Additional use of 20 ppm Al(III) after precipitation of 50 ppm Co(II) with 50 ppm Fe(III) made the optimal pH range for preferable flotation w wider. Foreign ions such as, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ were adopted and their effects were observed. Of which sulfate ion was f found to be detrimental to removal of cob퍼t ion by flotation. Coprecipitation of Co ion with Fe(III) and Al(III) resulted in b better removal efficiency of cobalt IOn 피 the presence of sulfate ion.

  • The effect of Cu addition on the corrosion characteristics of Zr alloys that developed for nuclear fuel cladding in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) was evaluated. The alloys having different element of Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and Cu were manufactured and the corrosion tests of the alloys were performed in static autoclave at $360^{\circ}C$, distilled water condition. The alloys were also examined for their microstructures using the optical microscope and the TEM equipped with EDS and the oxide property was characterized by using X-ray diffraction. From the result of corrosion test more than 450 days, the corrosion rate of the Zr-based alloys was changed with alloying element such as Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and especially affected by Cu addition. The corrosion resistance was increased with increasing the Cu content and the tetragonal $ZrO_2$ layer was more stabilized on the Cu-containing alloys.

  • We produced magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) and a Mg-rich solution as a nano-adsorbent and a coagulant for water treatment, respectively, using a low-grade iron ore. The ore was leached with aqueous hydrochloric acid and its impurities were removed by solvent extraction of the leachate using tri-n-butyl phosphate as an extractant. The content of Si and Mg, which inhibit the formation of MNPs, was reduced from 10.3 wt% and 15.5 wt% to 28.1 mg/L and < 1.4 mg/L, respectively. Consequently, the Fe content increased from 68.6 wt% to 99.8 wt%. The high-purity $Fe^{3+}$ solution recovered was used to prepare 5-15-nm MNPs by coprecipitation. The wastewater produced contained a large amount of $Mg^{2+}$ and can be used to precipitate struvite in sewage treatment. This process helps reduce the cost of both sewage and iron-orewastewater treatments, as well as in the economic production of the nano-adsorbent.

  • The microstructure of Cu-Mg-P base alloys were significantly affected by small amounts of Fe and Co additions, however the tensile properties and electrical conductivity of the Cu alloys were mainly determined by the fabrication process. Relatively high electrical conductivity (> 80% IACS) was obtained in the all Cu-Mg-P based alloys when they were finally aged at $480^{\circ}C$. Tensile properties could be significantly enhanced by final cold rolling, especially at extremely low temperatures. Softening of cold-rolled alloys took place at about $450^{\circ}C$ owing to recovery and recrystallization, but it was delayed up to $500^{\circ}C$ in the Fe-added alloy.

  • Through mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling, a 9%Cr Fe-based oxide dispersion-strengthened alloy sample was fabricated. The tensile strength of the alloy is significantly improved when the microstructure is modified during the post-consolidation process. The alloy samples were strengthened as the cooling rates increased, though the elongation was somewhat reduced. With a cooling rate of $800^{\circ}C/s$ after normalization at $1150^{\circ}C$, the alloy sample showed a tensile strength of 1450 MPa, which is about twice that of the hot rolled sample; however, at $600^{\circ}C$ the tensile strength dramatically decreased to 620 MPa. Optical microscope and transmission electron microscope were used to investigate the microstructural changes of the specimens. The resultant strengthening of the alloy sample could be mainly attributed to the interstitially dissolved nitrogen, the fraction of the tempered martensite, the fine grain and the presence of a smaller precipitate. The decrease in the tensile strength was mainly caused by the precipitation of vanadium-rich nitride.

  • In order to study the mechanical properties of high nitoren steel with ageing time, hardness, tensile stress several basic properties of Fe-Mn-Cr-Ni-N steel have been studied. With increasing partial pressure of nitrogen and ageing time to 10h, hardness and tensile stress are increased, but decreased beyond 10h because of over ageing. It is considered that the main factor related with mechnical properties is carbide precipitate, $M_7C_3$ which is precipitated with ageing time in matrix and optimum ageing time is 10h in $60^{\circ}C$.
