This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing preformed polymeric solution of Fe(III) as coagulants for water treatment. The differentiation and quantification of hydrolytic Fe(III) species in coagulant was done by utilizing spectrophotometric method based on the interaction of Fe(III) with Ferron as a complexing agent. The properties of the synthesized polymeric iron chloride (PICl) showed that the quantity of polymeric Fe(III) produced at r = 1.5 was 20% of the total iron in solution, as showing maximum contents. Coagulation experiments were conducted under the condition of various coagulant doses and pH for each coagulant prepared. From the comparison of the characterization of coagulation for $FeCl_3$ (r = 0.0) and PICl (r = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) coagulants, PICl (r = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5) coagulants was found to be more effective than other coagulant for the removal of organic matters. The experimental results for the coagulation tests at various pH ranges showed that the PICl was least affected by the coagulation pH and PICl was very effective for the removal of turbidity and organic materials over wide pH range (pH 4-9) tested.
The effective removal of turbid-inducing particulates and algae-inducing phosphorous was systematically investigated by the variation of physico-chemical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, and coagulant types. Al(III)-based and Fe(III)-based coagulants exhibited high removal efficiency of turbidity and phosphorous at optimal pH ranges of 7~9, in which zeta potential nearly approached to zero. The removal rate of turbidity rapidly increased with the increase of coagulant dosages, whereas the removal rate of phosphorous gradually increased due to an equivalent reaction of phosphorous with metallic ions. The generation of flocs during coagulation was visualized by high speed camera (Motion Scope 2000, Redlake Co.), and the images of singular flocs were captured by optical microscope. The flocs generated by Fe(III)-based coagulant was more compact than those induced by Al(III)-based coagulant, and the settlabiltiy of Fe(III)-induced flocs was superior to that of Al(III)-induced flocs.
Flocculation kinetics using ferric nitrate as a coagulant to coagulate kaolin clay in water was examined as a tool to investigate the effect of low temperature under tightly controlled treatment conditions. Both the particle size distribution data obtained from Automatic Image Analysis (AIA) system and the on-line measurement of the degree of turbidity fluctuation in a flowing suspension by Photometric Dispersion Analyzer (PDA) were used to measure flocculation kinetics. Results show that cold water temperature had a pronounced detrimental effect on flocculation kinetics. For improving flocculation kinetics at low water temperature, maintaining constant pOH to adjust water chemistry for temperature changes was found to be partially effective only in the more acidic pH range studied.
The study of flocculation kinetics is of fundamental interest in the field of water treatment, because rational study of the factors affecting the coagulation process should be based on the rate of particle growth. The effect of sulfate on flocculation kinetics were examined using ferric nitrate as a coagulant to coagulate kaolin clay in water under several experimental conditions. Both the particle size distribution data obtained from the AIA and the on-line measurement of turbidity fluctuation by the PDA were used to measure flocculation kinetics. Results show that sulfate ion added to the kaolin suspension played an important role in the flocculation process, not only improving flocculation kinetics at more acidic pH levels but also changing surface charge of particles. The kinetics of flocculation were improved mainly by the enhanced rate and extent of Fe(III) precipitation attributed to the addition of sulfate, and thereby, better interparticle collision frequency, but little by the charge reductions resulting from the sulfate addition. The increase in sulfate concentration beyond $3\times10^{-4}M (up to 2\times10^{-3}M)$ did not induce further improvement in flocculation kinetics, although the higher concentrations of sulfate ion substantially increased the negative ZP value of particles. Key Words : Flocculation Kinetics, Fe(III) Coagulant, Sulfate ion, Turbidity Fluctuation.
Effects of coagulation types on flocculation were investigated by using a photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA) as an on-line monitoring technique in this study. Nakdong River water were used and alum and ferric chloride were used as coagulants. The aim of this study is to compare the coagulation characteristics of alum and ferric chloride by a photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA). Floc growing rates ($R_v$) in three different water temperatures ($4^{\circ}C$, $16^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$) and coagulants doses (0.15 mM, 0.20 mM and 0.25 mM as Al, Fe) were measured. The floc growing rate ($R_v$) by alum was 1.8~2.8 times higher than that of ferric chloride during rapid mixing period, however, for 0.15 mM~0.25 mM coagulant doses the floc growing rate ($R_v$) by ferric chloride was 1.1~2.3 times higher than that of alum in the slow mixing period at $16^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Reasonable coagulant doses of alum and ferric chloride for turbidity removal were 0.1 mM (as Al) and 0.2 mM (as Fe), respectively, and the removal efficiency of those coagulant doses showed 94% for alum and 97% for ferric chloride. The appropriate coagulant dose of alum and ferric chloride for removing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) showed about 0.3 mM (as Al, Fe) and at this dosage, DOC removal efficiencies were 36% and 44%, and ferric chloride was superior to the alum for removal of the DOC in water.
Coagulation/precipitation process has been widely used for the removal of phosphate within domestic wastewater. Although Fe and Al are typical coagulants used for phosphate removal, these have some shortages such as color problem and low sedimentation velocity. In this study, both Fe and Al were used to overcome the shortages caused by using single one, and anionic polymer coagulant was additionally used to enhance sedimentation velocity of the precipitate formed. Batch experiments using a jar test were conducted with real wastewater, which was an effluent of the second sedimentation tank in domestic wastewater treatment plant. Response Surface Methodology was used to examine the responsibility of each parameter on phosphate removal as well as to optimize the dosage of the three coagulants. Economic analysis was also done on the basis of selling prices of the coagulants in the field. Phosphate removal efficiency of Fe(III) was 30% higher than those of Fe(II). Considering chemical price, optimum dosage for achieving residual phosphate concentration below 0.2 mg/L were determined to be 18.14 mg/L of Fe(III), 2.60 mg/L of Al, and 1.64 mg/L of polymer coagulant.

The experimental results of the characteristics of aluminum based and ferric based coagulants for the Nakdong River water showed that the main hydrolysis species contained in alum and $FeCl_3$ are monomeric species of 98% and 93.3%, respectively. The PACl of r=1.2 produced by the addition of base contained 31.2% of polymeric Al species and the PACl of r=2.2 contained 85.0% of polymeric Al species, as showing more polymeric Al species with increasing r value. Coagulation tests using Al(III) and Fe(III) salts coagulants for the Nakdong River water showed that the coagulation effectiveness of turbidity and organic matter was high in the order of $FeCl_3$ > PACl (r=2.2) > PACl (r=1.2) > alum. $FeCl_3$ has showed better flocculation efficiency than Al(III) salts coagulants. In addition, in case of Al(III) coagulants, the Al(III) coagulants of higher basicity, which contained more polymeric Al species, resulted in better coagulation efficiency for both turbidity and organic matter removed. The optimum pH range for all of the coagulants investigated was around pH 7.0 under the experimental pH range of 4.0~9.5. Especially, the highest basicity PACl (r=2.2) and $FeCl_3$ were considered as more appropriate coagulants for the removal of turbidity in the case of raw water exhibiting higher pH.
The novel behavior of ferrate(VI) has received an increased attention for its possible applications in various purposes particularly in the treatment of waste/effluent waters. It possess relatively high oxidizing capacity and the reduced ferrate(VI) into Fe(III) again an important and useful precipitant, coagulant, flocculants and likely to be a good adsorbent via the formation of ferric hydroxide for various metal cations. Moreover, the non-toxic effect makes it a 'green chemical' and further enhances its widespread uses in various purposes. Here an attempt has been made to review the applications of ferrate(VI) in the treatment of waste waters and also its possible future applications in the wastewater treatment technology.
To evaluate the performance of high rate coagulation system(HRCS) for CSOs treatment, fundamental function of lab scale HRCS has been tested by using the Jar tester and lab scale HRCS. The optimum pH dose by Streaming Current value was found in the range of 5.3~6.0 in Fe(III), and in the range of 5.8~6.6 in Al(III) and the optimum chemical dose were 0.44mM of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and 0.93mM of $FeCl_3$. The removal efficiencies at optimum $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ dose were 75%($TCOD_{Cr}$), 97%(TP), 95%(SS) and 96%(turbidity), respectively. And the removal efficiency of particles with less than $5{\mu}m$ of diameter was 70% and that of particles with higher than $5{\mu}m$ of diameter was 90%. The optimum alum dose in lab scale HRCS was 150mg/L, and the treatment efficiency was the best with addition of 1.0mg/L polymer. The effect of Micro sand addition was not clear, because the depth of the sediment tank in lab scale HRCS was not long enough. But the HRT of this lab scale HRCS was able to be shorten less then 7 minutes by adding the micro sand. The surface loading rates with respect to using different chemicals were 0.43m/h with alum only, 5.78m/h with alum and polymer and 6.22m/h with alum, polymer and micro sand. As a result, HRCS using coagulant, polymer and micro sand developed in this study was evaluated to be very effective for CSOs treatment.

Algae causes not only the eutrophication of lake, but also the deterioration of drinking water process. Especially, algogenic organic matters(AOM) are assumed as disinfection by-products(DBPs) precursors like humic and fulvic acids. In this study, it was investigated the characteristics changes of algogenic organic matter(AOM) by prechlorination and coagulation treatment. Evaluation of enhanced coagulation and applicability of UV oxidation process were also evaluated as the drinking water treatment system for the eutrophicated water source. prechlorination was effective process for algae removal but caused releasing of dissolved organic matter(DOC) into water due to the destruction of algae's cell. In coagulation treatment with Fe(III) coagulant, reaction pH is an important factor for the removal of AOM and triholomathanes(THMs). At pH 5, removal efficiency of DOC and THMs were dramatically improved by 50% and 28%, respectively, in comparison with the conventional coagulation treatment at about pH 7. Photo-Fenton($UV/H_2O_2/Fe^{3+}$) process among the UV oxidations is the most effective system to remove AOM, but its removal efficiency was lower than that of enhanced coagulation treatment at pH 5.
