The Marine Decapod Crustaceans of Geojedo Island and Its Adjacent Islets, Korea (거제도의 해산 십각류)

  • A taxonomic study for clarifying the decapod fauna of Gejedo Island, Korea was performed. Seventy nine species in 28 families were identified through the present investigation and of which 9 species of shrimps, 7 species of anomurans, and 39 species of crabs are newly added to the decapod fauna of this area. With the previously known 40 species, a total of 93 decapod species from this island and its adjacent islets are listed, and Pugettia quadridens intermedia Sakai, 1939 is redescribed with illustrations. The zoogeographical aspects of Geojedo Island are also discussed based on the composition of geographical forms of brachyuran decapods.

Taxonomy of the Marine Bryozoans from Namhaedo Island and Its Adjacent Waters, Korea (한국 남해도 해역의 태형동물에 관한 분류)

  • Twently seven speices of marine bryozoans from Namhaedo Island and its adjacent waters were identified. Among them, Hippothoa distans is new to Korean fauna and seven species are added as new to Namhaedo Island fauna. Twenty three species of them have been found also in Chejudo Island waters, which is affected by the Tsushima Current. Ten species have been found in the East Sea which is affected by both the Tsushima Warm Current and the North Korea Cold Current. So it is clear that the Namhaedo Island sea area is influenced by both the Tsushima Warm Current and the North Korea Cold Current.

Fauna of Non-biting Midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) from Soyang River in Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do, Korea

  • Adults of Chironomidae were collected at Soyang river sites in Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do on 1 August and 14 September in 2008, and 1 May in 2009. A total of 794 adults were collected, consisting of 52 species, 23 genera, 4 subfamilies. Among them, 7 species were recorded in Korea for the first time, and 9 species were new to science. These 7 previously unrecorded and 9 new species are described with illustrations. Eight species still have not been identified. The subfamily Prodiamesinae and four genera: Demicryptochironomus, Parakiefferiella, Psectrocladius and Monodiamesa are the first record in Korea. Tanytarsus seohyoni n. sp. was the most dominant species, consisting of 24.6% of the total samples.

Archaeological study of animal bones excavated from Cheju Kimnyungri cave site (제주 김녕리 궤내기 동굴 유적에서 출토된 뼈유물의 고고학적 연구)

  • The animal bone-remains excavated with earthwares at Cheju Kimnyungri cave site were investigated morphologically and osteometrically. The number of bone remains were 1706 pieces by morphological criteria. Based on the classification of bony pieces excavated in the cave site, the important animal species in Cheju island during the early Tamra period (presumably between A.D.0 - A.D. 500) was as follows; wild boar(75%), deer(17%), cattle(6%), and horse in small percentage. The excavated bone remains imply that the major fauna of animal species are composed of three species, including Sus scrofa, Cervus nippon and Bos taurus. These data suggests that the archaeological remains such as bone pieces are good indicators of the fauna animals, and of zoological entity in the island.

  • Chejudo, because of its location off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, has a varied marine mollusk fauna. As a preliminary step in an attempt to enumerate and study the mollusks of the island, a field trip was made by the authors to the Songsan Ilchulbang area on february 20, 2001. The purpose of the trip was to survey the mollusk fauna of the shoreline west of Songsan. (omitted)

A Newly Recorded Sea Star of the Genus Luidia (Asteroidea, Paxillosida, Luidiidae) from Jeju Island, Korea, Based on Morphological and Molecular Analysis

  • The genus Luidia belongs to the family Luidiidae in the order Paxillosida. It is a common littoral taxon, and the depth range of the Korean fauna is generally 0-100 m. However, specimens of Luidia were collected from Jeju Island in Korea at 150-160 m depth and identified as Luidia sagamina sagamina $D{\ddot{o}}derlein$, 1920. This species is determined by morphological characteristics and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence analysis. Luidia sagamina sagamina is a very rare sea star in worldwide and it only collected previously from Sagami Bay, Japan, and is newly reported in Korea. Four species of Luidia, including L. s. sagamina, are recorded in the Korean fauna.

New Records of Gnathiid and Limnoriid Species (Malacostraca, Peracarida, Isopoda) in Korean Fauna

  • Two isopods, Elaphognathia lucanoides Monod, 1926 and Limnoria saseboensis Menzies, 1957, are newly recorded in Korean fauna. Elaphognathia lucanoides can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characteristics combined: the cephalon is strongly excavated on the anterior margin; the paraocular ornamentation is forming a ridge distinctly; and the mandible is longer than cephalon. Limnoria saseboensis differs from the related species by the following features: pleonite 5 has two parallel longitudinal carinae; the pleotelson has one or two pairs of tubercles and two carinae; and the tubercles are present on the posterior margin of the pleotelson. In this paper, detailed descriptions and figures of these two species are provided.

First Record of the Genus and Species, Thetys vagina (Thaliacea: Salpida: Salpidae) in Korea

  • Pelagic tunicate, Thetys vagina Tilesius, 1802, is newly reported from Korean waters. The genus Thetys Tilesius, 1802 is also first recorded as Korean fauna. Thetys vagina is the only valid species in the genus Thetys. It is distinct from other genera by having at least 16 body muscles widely interrupted, no anterior proboscis, bent alimentary canal in the solitary oozooid, and five narrow body muscles, no ventral peduncle, an almost compact loop alimentary canal in the aggregate blastozooids. The specimens of T. vagina examined in this study were collected at the subtidal zone of Ulleung-do Island by scuba diving. In this paper, the detailed descriptions and photographs of both the solitary and aggregate living forms of T. vagina are provided.

A Newly Recorded Sea Star of the Genus Luidia (Asteroidea: Paxillosida: Luidiidae) from the Korea Strait, Korea

  • Asteroid specimens of the genus Luidia were collected at a depth of 95-100 m in the Korea Strait by bottom trawling in April 2016. The specimens were identified as Luidia avicularia Fisher, 1913 (Luidiidae: Paxillosida) based on morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analyses, and the species is new to the Korean fauna. A 648-bp partial nucleotide sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (mt-COI) gene was obtained from Korea, and then was compared to sequences of related species stored in GenBank using molecular phylogenetic analyses. No sequence differences were detected between the L. avicularia mt-COI gene sequences from Korea and China, and the species described in this report was clearly distinct from L. maculata, which was previously reported in Korean fauna. Three Luidia species have been reported in Korea.
