  • In order to apply resistive superconducting fault current limiters into electric power systems, the urgent issues to be settled are as follows, such as initial installation price of SFCL, operation and maintenance cost due to ac loss of superconductor and the life of cryostat, and high voltage and high current problems. The ac loss and high cost of superconductor and cryostat system are main bottlenecks for real application. Furthermore in order to increase voltage and current ratings of SFCL, a lot of superconductor components should be connected in series and parallel which resulted in extreme high cost. Thus, in order to make practical SFCL, we designed novel hybrid SFCL which combines superconductor and conventional electric equipment including vacuum interrupter, power fuse and current limiting reactor. The main purpose of hybrid SFCL is to drastically reduce total usage of superconductor by adopting current commutation method by use of superconductor and high fast switch. Consequently, it was possible to get the satisfactory test results using this method, and further works for practical applications are in the process.

  • A transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of the fault current limiters which have been proposed to reduce the fault current in the transmission lines. This paper proposes the new circuit configuration of a transformer type SFCL and also investigates the operating characteristics of the transformer type SFCL containig the resistor in the tertiary winding. The proposed SFCL contains the resistor in the tertiary winding. The newly inserted resistor can divert the power which the High-Tc superconducting has to bear. Because the resistor in the tertiary winding relieves the power of the High-Tc superconducting, it is possible that the proposed transformer type SFCL can decrease the more larger fault current than the conventional SFCL with the same High-Tc superconducting. And the cost of the proposed transformer type SFCL can be reduced.

  • Since the discovery of the high temperature superconductors many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means In limit fault current in power systems. HTS resistive type SFCL is based on the ultra fast transition from the superconducting (non resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density, In this study, the simulation method of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter using EMTDC is proposed and the developed EMTDC model of SFCL is applied to the modeled power network using the Parameters of real system.

  • Coercion transformer is commonly used in the electrical grid which in three phase of distribution system. The accident of the electrical grid is divided into a single, a double, a third line-to-ground faults and a double, a third line-to-line faults. A single line-to-ground fault accounts for nearly 75[%] among them. In this research, when a Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) was applied to the three phase power system, operation in a single line-to-ground fault and limiting characteristics of fault current according to turns ratio of third winding were analyzed. When a single line-to-ground fault happened, secondary winding's circuit was open. Then third winding's circuit with a SFCL was closed. So fault current was limited by diverted circuit. At this time, we could find out that size of the limited fault current could be changed according to third winding rate. We confirmed that limiting operation of the fault current was carried out within one-period. These results will be utilized in adjusting the size of the SFCL.

  • The application of large power transformer into a power distribution system was inevitable due to the increase of power demand and distributed generation. However, the decrease of the power transformer's impedance caused the short-circuit current of the power distribution system to be increase thus, the higher short-circuit current exceeded the cut-off ratings of the protective devices such as circuit breaker. To solve these problems, several countermeasures have been proposed to protect the power system effectively from higher fault current and the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected to be the promising countermeasure. In spite of excellent current limiting performances of the SFCL, on the other hand, the efforts to apply the SFCL into power system has been delayed due to both the limited spaces for the SFCL's installation and its long recovery time after the fault removal. In order to solve these problems, a hybrid SFCL, which can perform either first half cycle limiting of first half cycle non-limiting operation, has been developed by corporation of LSIS (LS Industrial System) and KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). In this paper, we tried to requirements hybrid SFCL by PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results of our analysis of the hybrid SFCL is that its accompanied the characteristics both the limit the fault current and quick recovery caused by the less impact from superconductor.

  • Recently. the high-tc superconducting fault col-rent limiters (SFCL) are studied worldwide to be classified as a resistive type or an inductive type such as a magnetic shielding type and a inductive type. The high-tc SFCL wish an open core belongs to the magnetic shielding type SFCL. Unlike conventional magnetic shielding type SFCLS it uses the open core to reduce the mechanical vibrations and installation space, The high-tc SFCL with an open core was designed and manufactured by stacking three BSCCO 2212 tubes. It was tested in the maximum source voltage of 400 Vrms. The results such as the reduction of fault current and impedance of the SFCL are described in this paper. The results show that the fault current in the source voltage of 400 Vrms was reduced to be about 123 Apeak. about 3.9 times greater than the normal state current. Also, the impedance of the high-tc SFCL was about 9${\Omega}$ about 9 times greater than the normal state impedance. The impedance of the SFCL appears just after the fault, and its size is dependent on the source voltage. From the impedance, the inductance of the SFCL was calculated.
