Probabilistic Safety Assessment of Gas Plant Using Fault Tree-based Bayesian Network (고장수목 기반 베이지안 네트워크를 이용한 가스 플랜트 시스템의 확률론적 안전성 평가)

  • Probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has been widely used to evaluate the seismic risk of nuclear power plants (NPPs). However, studies on seismic PSA for process plants, such as gas plants, oil refineries, and chemical plants, have been scarce. This is because the major disasters to which these process plants are vulnerable include explosions, fires, and release (or dispersion) of toxic chemicals. However, seismic PSA is essential for the plants located in regions with significant earthquake risks. Seismic PSA entails probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), event tree analysis (ETA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and fragility analysis for the structures and essential equipment items. Among those analyses, ETA can depict the accident sequence for core damage, which is the worst disaster and top event concerning NPPs. However, there is no general top event with regard to process plants. Therefore, PSA cannot be directly applied to process plants. Moreover, there is a paucity of studies on developing fragility curves for various equipment. This paper introduces PSA for gas plants based on FTA, which is then transformed into Bayesian network, that is, a probabilistic graph model that can aid risk-informed decision-making. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a gas plant, and several decision-making cases are demonstrated.

  • The British railway safety research group has developed a risk assessment model for the railway infrastructure and major railway accidents. The major hazardous factors of the railway infrastructure were identified and classified in the model. The frequency rates of critical top events were predicted by the fault tree analysis method using failure data of the railway system components and ratings of railway maintenance experts, The consequences of critical top events were predicted by the event tree analysis method. They classified the Joss of accident due to railway system into personal. commercial and environmental damages. They also classified 110 hazardous event due to railway system into three categories. train accident. movement accident and non-movement accident. The risk assessment model of the British railway system has been designed to take full account of both the high frequency low consequence type events (events occurring routinely for which there is significant quantity of recorded data) and the low frequency high consequence events (events occurring rarely for which there is little recorded data). The results for each hazardous event were presented in terms of the frequency of occurrence (number of events/year) and the risk (number of equivalent fatalities per year).

  • This study shows the developing process of the risk assessment models for railway casualty accidents. To evaluate the risks of these accidents, the hazardous events and the hazardous factors were identified by the review of the accident history and engineering interpretation of the accident behavior. The frequency of each hazardous event was evaluated from the historical accident data and structured expert judgments by using the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) technique. In addition, to assess the severity of each hazardous event, the ETA (Event Tree Analysis) technique and other safety techniques were applied. The risk assessment models developed can be effectively utilized in defining the risk reduction measures in connection with the option analysis.

  • 첨단 디지털기술이 적용된 자율운항선박과 같이 인간의 개입을 획기적으로 줄인 첨단 시스템의 운용은, 대상 시스템의 운용 중 시스템에 영향을 미치는 다양한 변수들의 변화를 실시간으로 검토하여 안전한 시스템 운용을 위한 의사결정을 지원할 수 있는 위험도평가 방법론의 적용이 요구된다. 본 논문은, 자율운항선박의 충돌 사고 위험도를 실시간으로 분석하기 위한 위험도 모델의 개발을 목적으로, 자율운항선박 충돌 사고 시나리오에 대한 위험도분석 작업 수행 내용과 실시간 충돌 위험도를 표현하기 위하여 검토한 간략한 위험도 모델 개념들을 제시하고 있다. 위험도 모델 개발을 위하여, 먼저 자율운항선박의 항해, 통신, 비상대응 기능들을 분석하고, 기능분석 결과를 바탕으로 충돌 사고 빈도 산출을 위한 Fault Tree Analysis와 충돌 사고로 인한 영향 산출을 위한 Event Tree Analysis를 수행하였다. 또한, Fault Tree와 Event Tree의 입력값 중 외부 조건에 따라 변화하는 변수들을 식별하였고, 각 변수들에 입력값은 자율운항선박의 운항 조건에서 발생할 수 있는 가상 데이터를 만들어 사용하였으며, 식별된 각 변수들의 변화로 인한 자율운항선박 충돌 위험도 변화량을 검토하였다.

Comparison of event tree/fault tree and convolution approaches in calculating station blackout risk in a nuclear power plant

  • Station blackout (SBO) risk is one of the most significant contributors to nuclear power plant risk. In this paper, the sequence probability formulas derived by the convolution approach are compared with those derived by the conventional event tree/fault tree (ET/FT) approach for the SBO situation in which emergency diesel generators fail to start. The comparison identifies what makes the ET/FT approach more conservative and raises the issue regarding the mission time of a turbine-driven auxiliary feedwater pump (TDP), which suggests a possible modeling improvement in the ET/FT approach. Monte Carlo simulations with up-to-date component reliability data validate the convolution approach. The sequence probability of an alternative alternating current diesel generator (AAC DG) failing to start and the TDP failing to operate owing to battery depletion contributes most to the SBO risk. The probability overestimation of the scenario in which the AAC DG fails to run and the TDP fails to operate owing to battery depletion contributes most to the SBO risk overestimation determined by the ET/FT approach. The modification of the TDP mission time renders the sequence probabilities determined by the ET/FT approach more consistent with those determined by the convolution approach.

Failure analysis of capacitor for sub-module in HVDC (HVDC 서브모듈용 커패시터의 고장 분석)

  • In general, capacitors have a large influence on the life of the system due to frequent charging and discharging. In this paper, we analyze the cause of the core failure of high voltage, high current HVDC sub-module film capacitor and analyze the precautions of the capacitor design and manufacturing process. First, the cause of the fault, the failure mode, and the effect are analyzed through the FMEA of the capacitor. To quantitatively evaluate the causes and effects of faults that have the greatest effect on the failure of a capacitor, a fault tree for the capacitor is presented and the failure rate is analyzed according to the design parameters and the driving conditions. It is verified that the main cause of capacitor failure is the capacitance change, and it is necessary to minimize the temperature rise, corona occurrence, electrode expansion, and insulation distance decrease during capacitor design and manufacturing process in order to reduce the failure rate of the capacitor.

Evaluation of Uncertainty Importance Measure by Experimental Method in Fault Tree Analysis (결점나무 분석에서 실험적 방법을 이용한 불확실성 중요도 측도의 평가)

  • In a fault tree analysis, an uncertainty importance measure is often used to assess how much uncertainty of the top event probability (Q) is attributable to the uncertainty of a basic event probability ($q_i$), and thus, to identify those basic events whose uncertainties need to be reduced to effectively reduce the uncertainty of Q. For evaluating the measures suggested by many authors which assess a percentage change in the variance V of Q with respect to unit percentage change in the variance $\upsilon_i$ of $q_i$, V and ${\partial}V/{\partial}{\upsilon}_i$ need to be estimated analytically or by Monte Carlo simulation. However, it is very complicated to analytically compute V and ${\partial}V/{\partial}{\upsilon}_i$ for large-sized fault trees, and difficult to estimate them in a robust manner by Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we propose a method for experimentally evaluating the measure using a Taguchi orthogonal array. The proposed method is very computationally efficient compared to the method based on Monte Carlo simulation, and provides a stable uncertainty importance of each basic event.
