Algorithm for Fault Location Estimation on Transmission Lines using Second-order Difference of a Positive Sequence Current Phasor

  • The accurate estimation of a fault location is desired in distance protection schemes for transmission lines in order to selectively deactivate a faulted line. However, a typical method to estimate a fault location by calculating impedances with voltages and currents at relaying points may have errors due to various factors such as the mutual impedances of lines, fault impedances, or effects of parallel circuits. The proposed algorithm in this paper begins by extracting the fundamental phasor of the positive sequence currents from the three phase currents. The second-order difference of the phasor is then calculated based on the fundamental phasor of positive sequence currents. The traveling times of the waves generated by a fault are derived from the second-order difference of the phasor. Finally, the distance from the relaying point to the fault is estimated using the traveling times. To analyze the performance of the algorithm, a power system with EHV(Extra High Voltage) untransposed double-circuit transmission lines is modeled and simulated under various fault conditions, such as several fault types, fault locations, and fault inception angles. The results of the simulations show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to estimate the fault locations with high speed and accuracy.

  • Fault location estimation is an important element for rapid recovery of power system when fault occur in transmission line. In order to calculate line impedance, most of fault location algorithm uses by measuring relaying waveform using DFT. So if there is a calculation error due to the influence of phasor by DC offset component, due to large vibration by line impedance computation, abnormal and non-operation of fault locator can be issue. It is very important to implement the robust fault location algorithm that is not affected by DC offset component. This paper describes an enhanced fault location algorithm based on the DC offset elimination filter to minimize the effects of DC offset on a long transmission line. The proposed DC offset elimination filter has not need any erstwhile information. The phase angle delay of the proposed DC offset filter did not occurred and the gain error was not found. The enhanced fault location algorithm uses DFT filter as well as the proposed DC offset filter. The behavior of the proposed fault location algorithm using off-line simulation has been verified by data about several fault conditions generated by the ATP simulation program.

  • This paper presents stochastic methodology based fault detection algorithm for induction motor systems. We measure current of healthy induction motors by means of hall sensor systems and then establish its probability distribution. We propose online probability density estimation which is effective in real-time implementation due to its simplicity and low computational burden. In addition, we accomplish theoretical analysis of the proposed estimation to demonstrate its convergence property by using statistical convergence and system stability theories. We apply our fault detection approach to three-phase induction motors and achieve real-time experiment for evaluating its reliability and practicability in industrial fields.

Attitude Estimation for Satellite Fault Tolerant System Using Federated Unscented Kalman Filter

  • We propose a spacecraft attitude estimation algorithm using a federated unscented Kalman filter. For nonlinear spacecraft systems, the unscented Kalman filter provides better performance than the extended Kalman filter. Also, the decentralized scheme in the federated configuration makes a robust system because a sensor fault can be easily detected and isolated by the fault detection and isolation algorithm through a sensitivity factor. Using the proposed algorithm, the spacecraft can continuously perform a given mission despite navigation sensor faults. Numerical simulation is performed to verify the performance of the proposed attitude estimation algorithm.

  • Fault locating is an important element to minimize the damage of power system. The computation error of fault locator may occur by the influence of the DC offset component during phasor extraction. In order to minimize the bad effects of DC offset component, this paper presents an improved fault location algorithm based on a DC offset removal filter for short fault in a double circuit transmission line. We have modeled a 154kV double circuit transmission line by the ATP software to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fault locating algorithm. The line to line short faults were simulated and then collected simulation data was used. It can be seen that the error rate of fault locating estimation by the proposed algorithm decreases than the error rate of fault locating estimation by conventional algorithm.

  • Arcing fault on overhead lines can be detected by amplitude of the arc voltage using numerical algorithm. In the case of transient fault, the arc voltage has any high value. In the case of permanent fault, the arc voltage is near zero. Thus, fault distance estimation should be performed by digital distance relay algorithm[3]. The purpose of this study is to build a structure for modeling of arcing fault detection and fault distance estimation algorithm using Matlab programming. Additionally, this algorithm has been designed in Graphical User Interface(GHI). So, this method using GUI interface of Matlab can reduce the number of simulation steps in modeling the distance relay.

  • 본 논문에서는 송전선로의 보호를 위하여 적응형 퍼지 시스템을 도입하여 고장 유형 판별부와 고장점 추정부의 두 부분으로 구성된 새로운 고장검출기법을 개발하였다. 제안된 시스템의 퍼지 입력변수로는 전류의 정상분과 영상분 그리고 실효치를 선정하였으며 신경회로망의 학습방법에 의하여 전건부와 후건부가 적절하게 조정되었다. 제시된 기법의 효용성을 입증하기 위하여 전자과도 해석 프로그램인 EMTP로부터 수집된 데이터를 활용하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과 제안된 기법은 고장유형이 정확하게 판별되었으며 고장점 추정이 개선되었다.

  • A new diagnastic method for detection and location of faults in a linear time-invariant system is proposed. The fault detection algorithm is formulated in a signal space, while the fault location algorithm with estimation is done in a parameter space. In a way different from the conventional approach, the method of fault location with estimation is studied to apply the new concept to establish the models with an unknown parameter under the assumption of 1-fold fault. According to computer simulation, the proposed diagnostic method is effective as an algorithm for fault diagnosis of industdrial process controllers.

  • This study is about fault detection and fault area detection of LV circuit in Cab Cubicle system which have control of train to keep safety in High Speed Train. LV circuit is operated with diagnosis system like safety system. In this paper, we suggest a design and an implementation method to detect fault or to detect fault area automatically about LV circuit.   • In case the fault occurs in AC power supply network, protective relaying system must selectively detect line-to-line/ground fault and immediately cut off the power flow into the fault location for guaranteeing the safety of people, electric vehicle and ground installation etc. It is the most important point in power system operation to minimize the fault duration by rapid trip scheme and accurate estimation of the fault location. In this paper, we analyze the load characteristics of each vehicle, perform the fault analysis of AC power supply network using AT current-ratio method. The result shows its usefulness.
