  • The most fatigue tests carried out under the either stress or strain control, but machines and structures had taken variable stress. This variable stress was treated as statistics based on p-type distributions. In this paper, the cumulative fatigue damage of SM45C round bar specimens having a center hole resulting from block loading with p-distributions in rotating bending conditions, is presented. The value of p was changed in the range from 0.25 to 1; 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1. The following conclusions were obtained through the constant stress amplitude experiments and the block loading experiments. (1) In constant loading test, fatigue life was affected by cyclic rate. From experimental data, N$_{f}$ (100cpm)/N$_{f}$(3000cpm)equal to 0.56. (2) In case of the cyclic rate 100cpm and 3000cpm, at the high stress amplitude level the crack propagation life N$_{*}$f is longer than the low stress amplitude level. (3) Miner's hypothesis may be valid for p=0.75 and prediction of fatigue life by Haibach's method agree with experimental data well for the case p=0.5, while the modified Miner's method agree with experimental data well for the case p=0.25.5.

  • Spectrum analysis of surface electromyogram (FMG) signals is an effective approach to the study of localized muscular fatigue during isometric contraction. Many investigators have con firmed the frequency of the EMG signals being lowered during sustained contaction. In this study, the cyclic loading tasks were performed, and a comparison was made for the median power frequency shift pattern of the EMG signals with the sustained contraction of the same load. The median power frequency shift of the EMG signals for the cyclic loading task was found to be a part of that for the sustained contraction. Based on this result, a new muscle fatigue index was computed by normalizing the duration of the sustained contraction. A fatigue index was obtained as a function of exertion level and the work/rest schedule. With the proposed fatigue index, it is possible to evaluate or predict the degree of muscular fatigue for a physically demanding task.

  • Cyclic loading due to traffic, excavation and blasting causes microcrack growth in rocks over long period of time, and this type of loading often causes rock to fail at a lower stress than its monotonically determined strength. Thus, the crack growth and coalescence under cyclic loading are important for the long-term stability problems. In this research, experiments using gypsum as a model material for rock are carried out to investigate crack propagation and coalescence under monotonic and cyclic loading. Both monotonic and cyclic tests have a similar wing crack initiation position, wing crack initiation angle, cracking sequence and coalescence type. Three types of crack coalescence were observed; Type I, II and III. Type I coalescence occurs due to a shear crack and Type II coalescence occurs through one wing or tension crack. For Type III, coalescence occurs through two wing or tension cracks. Fatigue cracks appear in cyclic tests. Two types of fatigue crack initiation directions, coplanar and horizontal directions, are observed.

  • In this paper, the low cycle fatigue failure and ratcheting behavior, as well as their interaction of AH32 steel were experimentally investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading. The effects of mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio on the low cycle fatigue life and ratcheting strain were discussed. It was found that the ratcheting strain increased while the fatigue life decreased with the increase of mean stress and stress amplitude, and the increasing stress ratio would result in smaller ratcheting and larger fatigue life. Two kinds of failure modes, i.e. low cycle fatigue failure due to crack propagates and ratcheting failure due to large plastic strain will take place respectively. Based on the experimental results, considered the effect of ratcheting on fatigue life, a model with the maximum stress and ratcheting strain rate was proposed. Comparison with the experimental result showed that the new model provided a good prediction for AH32 steel.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate experimentally the fatigue performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with hot-rolled ribbed fine-grained steel bars of yielding strength 500MPa (HRBF500). Three rectangular and three T-section RC beams with HRBF500 bars were constructed and tested under static and constant-amplitude cyclic loading. Prior to the application of repeated loading, all beams were initially cracked under static loading. The major test variables were the steel ratio, cross-sectional shape and stress range. The stress evolution of HRBF500 bars, the information about crack growth and the deflection developments of test beams were presented and analyzed. Rapid increases in deflections and tension steel stress occured in the early stages of fatigue loading, and were followed by a relatively stable period. Test results indicate that, the concrete beams reinforced with appropriate amount of HRBF500 bars can survive 2.5 million cycles of constant-amplitude cyclic loading with no apparent signs of damage, on condition that the initial extreme tensile stress in HRBF500 steel bars was controlled less than 150 MPa. It was also found that, the initial extreme tension steel stress, stress range, and steel ratio were the main factors that affected the fatigue properties of RC beams with HRBF500 bars, whose effects on fatigue properties were fully discussed in this paper, while the cross-sectional shape had no significant influence in fatigue properties. The results provide important guidance for the fatigue design of concrete beams reinforced with HRBF500 steel bars.

  • The beams components subjected to the loading such as axial, bending and cyclic thermal loads were studied in this research. The used constitutive equations are those of elasto-plasticity coupled to ductile and/or creep damage. The nonlinear kinematic hardening behavior was considered in elastoplasticity modeling. The unified damage law proposed for ductile failure and fatigue by the author of Sermage et al. (2000) and Kachanov's creep damage model applied to cyclic creep and low cycle fatigue of beams. Based on the results of the analysis, the shakedown limit loads were determined through the calculation of the residual strains developed in the beam analysis. The iterative technique determines the shakedown limit load in an iterative manner by performing a series of full coupled elastic-plastic and continuum damage cyclic loading modeling. The maximum load carrying capacity of the beam can withstand, were determined and imposed on the Bree's interaction diagram. Comparison between the shakedown diagrams generated by or without creep and/or ductile damage for the loading patterns was presented.

  • Damage mechanisms in bending piezoelectric actuators under electric fatigue loading are addressed in this work with the aid of an acoustic emission (AE) technique. Electric cyclic fatigue tests have been performed up to $10^7$ cycles on the fabricated bending piezoelectric actuators. An applied electric loading range is from -6 kV/cm to +6 kV/cm, which is below the coercive field strength of the PZT ceramic. To confirm the fatigue damage onset and its pathway, the source location and distributions of the AE behavior in terms of count rate and amplitude are analyzed over the fatigue range. It is concluded that electric cyclic loading leads to fatigue damages such as transgranular damages and intergranular cracking in the surface of the PZT ceramic layer, and intergranular cracking even develops into the PZ inner layer, thereby degrading the displacement performance. However, this fatigue damage and cracking do not cause the final failure of the bending piezoelectric actuator loaded up to $10^7$ cycles. Investigations of the AE behavior and the linear AE source location reveal that the onset time of the fatigue damage varies considerably depending on the existence of a glass-epoxy protecting layer.

  • Long-term performance of polymer under constant sustained load has been the main research focus, which created a need for the accelerated test method providing proper lifetime assessment. Cycling fatigue loading is one of the accelerated test method and has been of great interest. Microstructure change of high density polyethylene under cyclic fatigue loading and creep was examined utilizing a tensile device specially designed for creep and fatigue test and also can be attachable to the X-ray diffractometer. In this way, the crystal morphology change of polyethylene under creep and cyclic fatigue load was successfully monitored and compared. Despite the marked differences in macroscopic deformation between the creep and cyclic fatigue tests, crystal morphology such as crystallinity, crystal size, and $d$-spacing was as nearly identical between the two test cases. Specimens pre-deformed to different strains, i.e., before yield point (BYP), at yield point (YP) and after yield point (AYP), however, showed markedly different changes in crystal morphology, especially between AYP and the other two specimens.

  • The increase in waste tires has brought serious environmental problems. Using waste tires rubber particles as aggregate in concrete can reduce pollution and decrease the usage of natural aggregate. The paper describes an investigation on flexural bearing capacity of self-compacting concrete (SCC) pavement slabs containing crumb rubber. Cyclic loading tests with different stress ratios and loading frequencies are carried out on SCC pavement slabs containing crumb rubber. Based on Paris Law and test data, the fatigue life of SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber is discussed, and a revised mathematical model is established to predict the fatigue life of SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber. The model applies to different stress ratios and loading frequencies. The fatigue life of SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber is affected by the stress ratio and loading frequency. The fatigue life increases with the increase of stress ratio and loading frequency. Real-time acoustic emission (AE) signals in the SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber under cyclic loading are measured, and the characteristics of crack propagation in the SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber under different stress ratios and loading frequencies are compared. The AE signals provide abundant information of fracture process zone and crack propagation. The variation of AE ringing count, energy and b-value show that the fracture process of SCC pavement slab containing crumb rubber is divided into three stages.
