Fatigue life prediction and fatigue behavior of circular notched carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates are presented. Point and average stress criteria by Whitney and Nuismer are generalized to fatigue fracture criteria for notched laminates. Residual strength degradation model and the assumptions on the stress redistribution are introduced during the derivation of prediction equations. S-N curve, Basquin's relation, and H and H's FLPE1 are chosen for evaluation of residual strength of unnotched laminates and six prediction equations are derived. Experiments are performed using Graphite/Epoxy laminates whose fiber orientation is $[0$^\circ$/+45$^\circ$/-45$^\circ$/90$^\circ$]s. Presented prediction equations are reasonably close to experimental data and proposed appoach is found to be suitable to predict fatigue life of notched composite laminates.
A dynamic finite element analysis of a rig test model for truck chassis systems is conducted to establish an appropriate model designed to predict the fatigue life. A reference Belgian road input, which has been obtained from a field test, is imposed on the finite element model in the modal finite element analysis, and the resulting strain history is employed for the prediction of the fatigue life. This is compared with the prediction based upon the strain history measured in the field test. The two agree with each other within the limitation of the field data and the input data to the model. The high frequency responses over 50 Hz are confirmed to be negligible as far as their effect on the fatigue life is concerned.
Authors previously suggested the design sensitivity analysis based on transmissibility function and identified the sensitivity of measured point over the small modification of system dynamics. On the other hand, the acceleration data will not reveal the strain information at the same location and authors suggested energy isoclines that successfully predict the fatigue damage on the interesting location to overcome the drawback of acceleration over fatigue society. Both of methodologies, sensitivity analysis and fatigue damage prediction, commonly use the response acceleration response as main indicator. In this paper, authors investigate the advanced method of vibration fatigue prediction using design sensitivity analysis to enhance the accuracy of predicted accumulated fatigue. Uni-axial vibration testing is performed with finite element model of a simple notched specimen and the prediction of fatigue damage at notched location is conducted for accelerations at different measurement locations that show different sensitivity contribution, either.
The influence of pre-strain in low-cycle fatigue behavior of Fe-18Mn-0.05Al-0.6C TWIP steel was studied by conducting axial strain-controlled tests. As-received plates were deformed by rolling with reduction ratios of 10 and 30%, respectively. A triangular waveform with a constant frequency of 1 Hz was employed for low cycle fatigue test at the strain amplitudes in the range of ${\pm}0.4{\sim}{\pm}0.6$ pct. The results showed that low-cycle fatigue life was strongly dependent on the amount of pre-strain as well as the strain amplitude. Increasing the amount of prestrain, the number of reversals to failure was significantly decreased at high strain amplitudes, but the effect was negilgible at low strain amplitudes. A new model for predicting fatigue life of pre-strained body has been devised adding a correction term of ${\Delta}E_{pre-strain}$ to the energy-based fatigue damage parameter.
This work aims to investigate on the low cycle fatigue life assessment, which is adopted on the strain-life relationship, or better known as the Coffin-Manson relationship, and also the strain energy density-based model. The low cycle fatigue test results of Alloy 617 weldments under $900^{\circ}C$ have been statistically estimated through the Coffin-Manson relationship according to the provided strain profile. In addition, the strain energy density-based model is proposed to represent the energy dissipated per cycle as fatigue damage parameter. Based on the results, Alloy 617 weldments followed the Coffin-Manson relationship and strain energy density-based model well, and they were compatible with the experimental data. The predicted lives based on these two proposed models were examined with the experimental data to select a proper life prediction parameter.
This is the final one of the two companion papers dealing with accuracy of accumulated fatigue damage estimation under wide band process. It is stated that four kinds of wide band models exist: typed of equivalent stress, combined PDF, correction factor, and damage combination. For the idealized ESDs from full scale measurement data on an 8100TEU container vessel, fatigue damages are compared for a narrow band prediction model based on Rayleigh PDF and five wide band fatigue prediction models of Dirlik, Wirsching-Light, Jiao-Moan, Benasciutti and DNV. DNV model consistently overestimates fatigue damages regardless of variation of ESDs. Predictions by Jiao-Moan model, which is understood as standard method for design of offshore platforms, are also in conservative side. Best accuracy is found from the results by Dirlik and Benasciutti models, but Benasciutti model is preferred since it can easily combined with narrow band fatigue damage based on Rayleigh PDF.
A more accurate life prediction for gas turbine blade takes into account the material behavior under the complex thermo-mechanical fatigue(TMF) cycles normally encountered in turbine operation. An experimental program has been carried out to address the thermo-mechanical fatigue life of the IN738LC nickel-base superalloy. In the first phase of the study, out-of-phase and in-phase TMF experiments have been performed on uncoated and coated materials. In the temperature range investigated. the deposition of NiCrAlY air plasma sprayed coating did not affect the fatigue resistance. In the second phase of the study, a physically-base life prediction model that takes into account of the contribution of different damage mechanisms has been applied. This model was able to reflect the temperature and strain rate dependences of isothermal cycling fatigue lives, and the strain-temperature history effect on the thermo-mechanical fatigue lives.
In this study, about the fatigue life of welded structure material under fluctuation loading, the prediction life which is produced by using the Histogram Recorder System was compared with the experimental life which is produced by the RMC model which is imported by conception of equivalent stress. In this result, this is represented few difference by comparing prediction life which is produced by damage analysis depended on Miner's rule, by using the Histogram Recorder System, with experimental life which is produced by the RMC load model which is imported by conception of equivalent of stress, therefore fatigue life is easily predicted by using Histogram Recorder System, and result of prediction has equivalent accuracy with other method which is more complex than the Histogram Recorder System. Besides the damage which is produced by stress which is high thirty percentage rank in the stress range of damage inducing, is nearly equal to the damage which is induced the rest of seventy percentage, there fore we can see that damage accumulation which is induced few time overload which is effected welded structure material is great.
Tensile and low cycle fatigue tests on prior cold worked 3l6L stainless steel were carried out at various temperatures ftom room temperature to 650$^{\circ}C$. Fatigue resistance was decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. Cyclic plastic deformation, creep, oxidation and interactions with each other are thought to be responsible for the reduction in fatigue resistance. Currently favored life prediction models were examined and it was found that it is important to select a proper life prediction parameter since stress-strain relation strongly depends on temperature. A phenomenological life prediction model was proposed to account for the influence of temperature on fatigue life and assessed by comparing with experimental result. LCF failure mechanism was investigated by observing fracture surfaces of LCF failed specimens with SEM.
The effects of the hole size(2R) and the specimen width(W) on the fatigue strength and the fatigue life in plain woven glass/epoxy composite plates are experimentally investigated under constant amplitude tensile fatigue loading. It is shown in this study that the notch sensitivity under fatigue loading is lower than that under static loading. It can be explained by the fact that the stress concentration is relaxed by the damage developed at the boundary of circular hole. To predict the fatigue strength at a specific cycle, the modified point stress criterion represented as a function of the geometry of the specimen(2R and W) is applied. It is found that the model used in the prediction of the notched tensile strength predicts the fatigue strength with reasonable accuracy. A model for predicting the fatigue life in the notched specimen, based on the S-$N_f$, curve in the smooth specimen, is suggested.
