  • As it recently appears that Life Cycle Cost Analysis may be considered as new methodology for economic valuation of infrastructure many researches have been made to assess LCC(Life Cycle Cost) of each facility based on a reasonable methods. In general, LCC is composed of construction cost and expected maintenance repair cost. And especially, maintenance repair cost must be estimated to enhance the reliability through systematic and reasonable methods. However in Korea, because high speed railway steel bridges are recently constructed no direct statistical data are available for the account of the maintenance cost and then their maintenance characteristics are not linear yet. Therefore, the approach proposed in the paper utilizes a theoretical determination and degradation of the corrosion and fatigue of the bridges based on Rahgozar et al.(2006)'s model on fatigue notch factor considering into the corrosion to incorporate the corrosion effect into the fatigue strength reduction model. And then, the corresponding probability of failure is calculated in terms of the reliability index using S-N curve to formulate the fatigue limit state. Therefore, this paper proposes the minimum Life Cycle Cost through optimum maintenance plan analysis of high-speed railway steel bridges under construction. Finally, this paper reviews the proposed model in oder to confirm the applicability and feasibility by appling it to high speed railway steel bridges under construction

  • A shear connection in composite bridges with precast decks has considerable characteristics different from cast-in-place deck bridges such as shear pocket and bedding layer. Thus, it is necessary to build design basis of the shear connector in precast decks through the experiments. In order to estimate fatigue life of shear connector in precast deck bridges, push-out fatigue tests were conducted with parameter, bedding layer thickness. As a result of the tests, failure modes of shear connector were observed. Consequently, empirical S-N curve equations of stud shear connector in precast deck bridges were proposed in this paper.

  • In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out at stress test levels of 461 MPa, 441 MPa, and 431 MPa by using smooth specimen of$2_{1/4}$ Cr-1 Mo steel with the stress ratio(R) of 0.05. The initiation, growth and coalescense process of the major cracks and sub-cracks among the fatigue cracks on the smooth specimen are investigated and measured under each stress level at a constant cycle ratio by the replica technique with optical microscope. Some of the important results are as follows: In spite of the difference of stress levels, the major crack data gather into a small band in the curve of surface crack length and crack depth against cycle ratio N/Nf. The sub-crack data, however, deviate from the band of the major crack. The growth rates, da/dN, of major and sub-crack plotted against the stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$, have the tendency to be compressed on a relatively small band. But it is more effective to predict fatigue life through major cracks. The propagation behavior of surface microcracks on the smooth specimens coincides with that of the specimen having an artificial small surface defect or through crack.

  • The fatigue failure envelopes for the prediction of the fatigue life of asphalt pavements were obtained from the results of laboratory fatigue test for asphalt mixture. The envelopes did not depend on the experimental temperature and the number of loading, and varied with the types of asphalts. In the case of dense graded asphalt concrete, the envelopes formed a single curve regardless of the penetration of the asphalt. On the other hand, the method for the fatigue life prediction was presented based on the envelopes obtained and the triple layered elastic theory developed by Burmister.

  • Material of boat hull has been used mainly with FRP composite materials until now. FRP boat hull manufacturing began to be restricted after the 2000's under international regulation on ocean environment safety. Shipyard on a small scale has manufactured polyethylene canoe and kayak hulls. Polyethylene has the melting point lower than the existing hull materials. Thermal stress occurs on outer hull surface when the polyethylene boat hull is exposed to sunlight. If it happens everyday, boat hull undergoes fatigue damage due to thermal fatigue. Therefore, this study presents the statistical fatigue life estimation on the HDPE boat hull subject to repeated thermal stress under three point bending condition.

  • The fatigue problem of Prestressed Concrete(PSC) bridges are more serious than the other type of concrete bridges, because the cross sectional area and self weight of PSC bridges are smaller. The endurance of strengthening methods for PSC bridges are tested in this study. Glass fiber sheeting and external post-tensioning methods were applied. 1/5 scale PSC beams were made for fatigue test, same as static test. The range of repeated load is from 10% to 80% of yielding load with sine curve. The experimental results show that the failure cycle of strengthened members are increased compare to non-strengthened members. The members strengthened with glass fiber show better enhancement in fatigue problem than the members strengthened with external post-tensioning method, though the adhesion of glass fiber and concrete is failed, as increase of crack. With these experimental results, it can be said that the strengthening methods used in this study are efficient at extending the life time of aged PSC bridges.

  • A strut rubber insulator is used in a suspension component of passenger cars. The uni-axial tension, compression, and the shear test were performed to acquire the constants of the strain energy functions which were Mooney-Rivlin model and Ogden model. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the behavior of deformation and stress distribution by using the commercial finite element code MARC ver K6.2. Also, the fatigue tests were carried out to obtain the fatigue life-load curve. The fatigue failure was initiated at the folded position of rubber, which was the same result predicted by the finite element analysis.

  • This paper presents the concept design procedure of a floating-type combined renewable energy platform based on hydrodynamic analyses and is focused on the fatigue design of taut-type mooring lines of the platform. Two types of combined renewable energy platforms are considered: a combination of wind turbine, wave turbine and photovoltaic energy plant and a combination of wind turbine, current turbine and photovoltaic energy plant. The basic configurations are conceptually determined from the understanding of floating offshore plants, while the main dimensions have been determined based on a hydrostatic calculation. Fully coupled hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out to identify the motion characteristics of the floating body and the tension histories of the mooring lines. The tension history is used for the fatigue life prediction based on the rain-flow cycle counting method. For the fatigue life prediction, tension life curves from API and the Palmgren-Miner rule are employed.

  • In this study, Non-load-carrying EH Grade steels in fillet welded joints were evaluated with both the hot spot stress method and the 1mm stress method. The thickness effect criterion for fatigue strength evaluation of welded of welded steel structures recommendations of the IIW was used to evaluate the fatigue strength of EH40 and EH36 and Both EH40 and EH36 have been compared with FAT 125 curve recommended in the IIW. Furthermore, fatigue strength of the welded tow and the ground conditions for Non-load-carrying EH36 based on the 1mm stress method has been discussed.

  • This study proposes a fatigue reliability evaluation procedure for steel-composite high-speed railway bridge based on dynamic analysis and investigates the effectiveness of Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) in terms of the extension of fatigue life of the bridge. For the fatigue reliability evaluation, the limit state is determined using S-N curve and linear fatigue-damage accumulation. Dynamic analyses are peformed repeatedly to consider the uncertainties of train-velocity and damping ratio of the bridge. The distribution of random variables related to fatigue damage for the intended service life is then statistically estimated from analytical results. Finally, the fatigue reliability indices are obtained by means of the Advanced First-Order Second-Moment (AFOSM) method. Through numerical simulation of a steel-composite bridge of 40m span, the effectiveness of TMD on fatigue life of the bridge is examined and the results are presented.
