  • This paper introduces alert fatigue and presents methods to measure alert fatigue by using physiological signals. Alert fatigue is a phenomenon that which an individual is constantly exposed to frequent alarms and becomes desensitized to them. Blind spots are one leading cause of struck-by accidents, which is one most common causes of fatal accidents on construction sites. To reduce such accidents, construction equipment is equipped with an alarm system. However, the frequent alarm is inevitable due to the dynamic nature of construction sites and the situation can lead to alert fatigue. This paper introduces alert fatigue and proposes methods to use physiological signals such as electroencephalography, electrodermal activity, and event-related potential for the measurement of alert fatigue. Specifically, this paper presents how raw data from the physiological sensors measuring such signals can be processed to measure alert fatigue. By comparing the processed physiological data to behavioral data, validity of the measurement is tested. Using preliminary experimental results, this paper validates that physiological signals can be useful to measure alert fatigue. The findings of this study can contribute to investigating alert fatigue, which will lead to lowering the struck-by accidents caused by blind spots.

  • The increase in the number of fatal electric accidents over the years has escalated the demand for specialized forensic engineers to determine their relevant technical causes. Likewise, the complexities associated with identifying the causes of electrocution accidents have prompted the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police to adopt a new methodology to diagnose electrocution accidents, consisting of an approach that involves medico-legal examination, electrical diagnosis of the evidence, and trace evidence analysis. This paper will discuss the application of the adopted method in further detail by unfolding two case reports. The first report outlines a case in which a worker got electrocuted at a construction site while attempting to turn on a lamp. The second case report involves the death of a technician in a workshop after trying to disconnect a washing machine from its plug. The methodology was utilized during the investigation of both cases, which were attended by the appointed forensic engineers and showed promising results.

  • For monitoring the status of industrial accidents, many statistical indexes have been developed and applied such as fatal rate, frequency rate, and severity rate. These accident indexes are measured by frequency and loss time according to the accidents in the individual industry level. However, it is less considered to use the index of identifying the industrial concentration of accidents in the holistic view. Thus, this study aims to suggest the accident concentration level among domestic industries through index analysis. The concentration level of industrial accidents is calculated by the accident composition of sub-industries. This concentration level shows whether an industry is comprised of a few sub-industries generating more accidents or an industry consists of sub-industries having the similar number of accidents. To this end, the concentration rate (CR) and concentration index (CI) are proposed to take a look at the industry composition of accidents by embracing the concept of market concentration indexes such as Hirschman-Herfindahl Index. As for the case study, four industries of mining, manufacturing, transportation, and other business (usually service) are analyzed in terms of indexes of accident rate, death(fatality) rate, and CR and CI of accident and death. Finally, we illustrate the positioning map that the accident concentration level is compared with the traditional accident frequency level among industries.

  • Because construction work is conducted outdoors, construction workers are affected by harmful environmental factor. Especially, Particulate Matter (PM10) is one of the harmful environmental factors with a diameter of 10㎍/m3 or less. When PM10 is inhaled by human, it can cause fatal impact on the human. Contrary to the various analyses of health impact on PM10, the research on the relationship between construction accidents and PM10 are few. Therefore, this study aims to conduct the relative frequency analysis which find out the correlation between construction accidents and PM10, and the modified PM10 grade is suggested to expect accidents probability caused by PM10 in the construction industry. This study is conducted by four steps. i) Establishment of the database; ii) Classification of data; iii) Analysis of the Relative Frequency of accidents in the construction industry by PM10 concentration; iv) Modified PM10 groups to classify the impact of PM10 on accident. In terms of frequency analysis, the most accidents were occurred in the average concentration of PM10 (32㎍/m3). However, we found that the relative frequency of accident was increased as the concentration of PM10 increased. This means the higher PM10 concentration can cause more accidents during construction. In addition, PM10 concentration was divided as 6 groups by the WHO, but the modified PM10 grade by the relative frequency on accident was suggested as 3 groups.

  • Railway is huge traffic system which is operated organically combining all the elements; vehicle, track, electric power, signal/communication, operation, etc. Safety level has ben improved steadily by learning lessons from past accident. But with rapid progress in high-speed, massive, high-frequency transit fresh idea of accident prevention is now in order. In quest of effective and efficient countermeasure, we aim to establish an adequate safety evaluation/management method. • Overhead cranes are the most widely used and have been identified as one of the main causes of fatal accidents. Although structural, mechanical and electrical safety standards for overhead cranes have been established to some extent, ergonomic standards related to crane controllers are rarely established. As a result, many crane accidents are reported to be caused by operator's error. To investigate the actual use of crane controllers in the industrial field, we surveyed 82 overhead cranes in 15 workplace and interviewed workers operating them. This study has presented the ergonomic problems related to the crane controllers in the field. As a result of investigation, it was found that the direction control signs, the sign language, and the button layout on the pendant switches and remote controllers are not standardized, which can cause a human error. To reduce human errors in overhead crane operation, ergonomic standards for controllers should be reflected on the government legislation or standards.

  • Forklift truck is one of the dangerous machines which causes the fatal accidents most frequently. The causes of fatalities by forklift from 2008 to 2011 were analyzed. Crushing the operator when tipping over or falling off a truck were the major causes of death in this study. The purpose of this study is to show measures from the engineering point of view to prevent the forklift truck accidents. In order for that, the domestic requirement for forklift safety was compared with those of foreign and international standards. The manufacturers' opinion was also collected regarding to improve the forklift safety. Several measures were suggested in order to prevent fatalities caused by forklift.
