  • The Born approximation is widely used for solving the complex scattering problems in electromagnetics. Approximating total internal electric field by the background field is reasonable for small material contrasts as long as scatterer is not too large and the frequency is not too high. However in many geophysical applications, moderate and high conductivity contrasts cause both real and imaginary part of internal electric field to differ greatly from background. In the extended Born approximation, which can improve the accuracy of Born approximation dramatically, the total electric field in the integral over the scattering volume is approximated by the background electric field projected to a depolarization tensor. The finite difference and elements methods are usually used in EM scattering problems with a 2D model and a 3D source, due to their capability for simulating complex subsurface conductivity distributions. The price paid for a 3D source is that many wavenumber domain solutions and their inverse Fourier transform must be computed. In these differential equation methods, all the area including homogeneous region should be discretized, which increases the number of nodes and matrix size. Therefore, the differential equation methods need a lot of computing time and large memory. In this study, EM modeling program for a 2D model and a 3D source is developed, which is based on the extended Born approximation. The solution is very fast and stable. Using the program, crosshole EM responses with a vertical magnetic dipole source are obtained and the results are compared with those of 3D integral equation solutions. The agreement between the integral equation solution and extended Born approximation is remarkable within the entire frequency range, but degrades with the increase of conductivity contrast between anomalous body and background medium. The extended Born approximation is accurate in the case conductivity contrast is lower than 1:10. Therefore, the location and conductivity of the anomalous body can be estimated effectively by the extended Born approximation although the quantitative estimate of conductivity is difficult for the case conductivity contrast is too high.

  • Vibration condition monitoring of low-speed rotational slewing bearings is essential ever since it became necessary for a proper maintenance schedule that replaces the slewing bearings installed in massive machinery in the steel industry, among other applications. So far, acoustic emission(AE) is still the primary technique used for dealing with low-speed bearing cases. Few studies employed vibration analysis because the signal generated as a result of the impact between the rolling element and the natural defect spots at low rotational speeds is generally weak and sometimes buried in noise and other interference frequencies. In order to increase the impact energy, some researchers generate artificial defects with a predetermined length, width, and depth of crack on the inner or outer race surfaces. Consequently, the fault frequency of a particular fault is easy to identify. This paper presents the applications of empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition(EEMD) for measuring vibration signals slewing bearings running at a low rotational speed of 15 rpm. The natural vibration damage data used in this paper are obtained from a Korean industrial company. In this study, EEMD is used to support and clarify the results of the fast Fourier transform(FFT) in identifying bearing fault frequencies.

  • One of the widely used NDT(Non-destructive techniques) is the ultrasonic pulse velocity (USPV) method, which determines the travel time of the ultrasonic pulse through the tested materials and most studies were focused on the results expressed in time domain. However, the signal of ultrasonic pulse in time domain can be transformed into frequency domain, through Fast fourier transform(FFT) to give more useful informations. This paper shows a comparison of changes in the pulse velocity and frequency domain signals of concrete for various load histories using lightweight fine aggregates. The strength prediction equation for normal concrete using USPV cannot be used to estimate lightweight fine aggregate concrete strength. The signals in frequency domain of ultrasonic pulse of lightweight fine aggregate concrete does not show any significant difference comparing with those of normal concrete. The increases in stress levels of concrete change the pulse velocities and maximum frequencies, however the apparent relationship between themselves can not be found in this experiment.

  • The formants of the 9 Korean standard vowels(which used by the average people of Seoul, central-area of the Korean peninsula) were measured by analysis with the linear predictive coding(LPC) and fast Fourier transform(FFT). The author already had reported the constriction area for the Korean standard vowels, and with the existing data, the distance from glottis to the constriction area in the vocal tract of each vowel was newly measured with videovelopharyngograms and lateral Rontgenograms of the vocal tract. We correlated the formant frequencies with the distance from glottis to the constriction area of the vocal tract. Also we tried to correlate the formant frequencies with the position of tongue in the vocal tract which is divided into 2 categories : The position of tongue in oral cavity by the distance from imaginary palatal line to the highest point of tongue and the position in pharyngeal cavity by the distance from back of tongue to posterior pharyngeal wall. This study was performed with 10 adults(male : 5, female : 5) who spoke primary 9 Korean standard vowels. We had already reported that the Korean vowel [i], [e], $[{\varepsilon}]$ were articulated at hard palate level, [$\dot{+}$], [u] were at soft palate level, [$\wedge$] was at upper pharynx level and the [$\wedge$], [$\partial$], [a] in a previous article. Also we had noted that the significance of pharyngeal cavity in vowel articulation. From this study we have concluded that ; 1) The F$_1$ is related with the oral cavity articulated vowel [i, e, $\varepsilon$, $\dot{+}$, u]. 2) Within the oral cavity articulated vowel [i, e, $\varepsilon$, $\dot{+}$, u] and the upper pharynx articulated vowel [o], the F$_2$ is elevated when the diatance from glottis to the constriction area is longer. But within the lower pharynx articulated vowel [$\partial$, $\wedge$, a], the F$_2$ is elevated when the distance from glottis to the constriction area is shorter. 3) With the stronger tendency of back-vowel, the higher the elevation of the F$_1$ and F$_2$ frequencies. 4) The F$_3$ and F$_4$ showed no correaltion with the constriction area nor the position of tongue in the vocal tract 5) The parameter F$_2$- F$_1$, which is the difference between F$_2$ frequency and F$_1$ frequency showed an excellent indicator of differenciating the oral cavity articulated vowels from pharyngeal cavity articulated vowels. If the F$_2$-F$_1$ is less than about 600Hz which indicates the vowel is articulated in the pharyngeal cavity, and more than about 600Hz, which indicates that the vowel is articulated in the oral cavity.

  • Background and Objectives : Many studies have described and analyzed singer's formant and it has been shown that the epilaryngeal tube in the human airway is responsible for vocal ring, or the singer's formant. A similar phenomenon produced by trained singers in their speech led some authors to examine the speaker's ring. This study was designed to analyze the speaking voice of the singers and speaker's ring. Baterials and Methods : Ten tenors, fifteen baritones, fifteen sopranos and ten mezzo sopranos attending the music college, department of vocal music were chosen for this study. Fifteen male and fifteen female untrained normal speakers were chosen for control group. Each subject was asked to produce a sample of a sustained spoken vowel /ah/ sound for at least five seconds and read sentence 'Kaeul'. The sound data was analyzed using the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) - based power spectrum, Long term average(LTA) power spectrum using the FFT algorithm of the Computerized Speech Lab(CSL, Kay elemetrics, Model 4300B, USA). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS). Results : For LTA Power spectrum of/ah/ sound, a significant increase was seen in the 2,500-3,500Hz region(p<0.01) in four trained singer group compared with untrained speaker group, and a significant increase in the 9,000-10,000Hz region(p<0.01) in soparano group. Similarly, in sentence 'Kaeul', there was a significant increase in energy in the tenor, baritone, mezzo soprano group compared with the untrained speaker group in the 2,500-3,500Hz region(p<0.01), and a significant increase in all frequency region(p<0.01) in the soprano group. Conclusions : The LTA power spectrum suggests that trained singers group show more energy concentration in the 'singer's formant' region in the speaking voice, and authors believe this region to be the 'speaker's ring'. Further research is needed on the effect of singing training on the resonance of the speaking voice.

  • ATS(Automatic Train Stop) system makes train stop when it runs over the speed limit and ensure the safe operation of train. Seoul Metro line 2 in Korea, which started its passenger service in 1982, has adopted ATS system for its signaling system. The ATS system has only a train stop function at the time of emergency, and Seoul Metro is planning to replaced them with ATC(Automatic Train Control)/ATO(Automatic Train Operation) system which can provide the dedicated speed control for headway reduction and automatic operation of train. Until all the ATS system is replaced with the new ATC system, both systems are to operate simultaneously at the same metro line. In this situation, ATS system sometimes reveals improper operation: train stops suddenly without any obstacles in front of it. These emergency stops cause interruption of passenger service, and abnormal abrasion of wheels and rail. This paper makes it clear that these interruptions are caused by EMI phenomena between ATS on-board device and ATC wayside device : Signal current flowing in AF track circuit of ATC is turn out to be a EMI source that prevent normal operation of the ATS on-board device. Although the two systems have different frequency-ranges (ATS system has frequency range between $78{\sim}130$[kHz] and ATC system has frequency range between $9.5{\sim}16.5$[kHz]), it turned out that EMI phenomena appears between the both systems. This is investigated by measuring the output signal from ATS on-board device passing over ATC wayside device. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis of the signal reveals that AF track circuit signal is transmitted to the ATS on-board device and induce noise causing improper operation. The countermeasures to the EMI phenomena are examined in three ways; blocking EMI transmission, enforcement of EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility) of ATS on-board device, and blocking the EMI source. It is suggested that the practical solution be blocking EMI source temporarily, that is breaking AF track circuit signal when the trains with ATS on-board device pass over it. To this purpose, TODS(Train Occupation Detection System) is developed, and has made a success in preventing the EMI problem of Seoul Metro line 2.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction of progesterone with various cyclodextrins (CDs) in the aqueous solution and in solid state, and finally to formulate a parenteral aqueous formulation. CDs used were ${\alpha}-$, ${\beta}-$, and ${\gamma}-CD$, $2-hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-CD$ (HPCD), sulfobutyl $ether-{\beta}-CD$ (SBCD), $dimethyl-{\beta}-CD$ (DMCD) and $trimethyl-{\beta}-CD$ (TMCD). The solubility studies of progesterone were performed in the presence of various CDs as a function of concentration or temperature. The solubility of progesterone increased in the rank order of ${\alpha}-CD$ < ${\beta}-CD$ < ${\gamma}-CD$ < TMCD$ < HPCD < DMCD < SBCD. Addition of SBCD (200 mg/ml) in water increased the aqueous solubility $(9.36\;{\mu}g/ml)$ about 3,200 times, and lowering the temperature facilitated the solubilization of progesterone. However, the addition of HPCD and SBCD in 20:80 (v/v) polyethylene glycol 300-water and propylene glycol-water cosolvents markedly decreased the solubility of progesterone, compared with solubilizing effects in water. Physical mixtures and solid dispersions of progesterone with HPCD or SBCD were prepared, and evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), near IR spectroscopy and dissolution studies. By DSC and IR studies, it was found that progesterone was dispersed in HPCD in monotectic state and dissolved rapidly from both solid dispersions. Based on solubility studies, new aqueous progesterone fonnulations (5 mg/ml) containing SBCD (200 mg/ml) could be prepared and did not form precipitates even after 2 months at $4^{\circ}C$. The solution was transparent when mixed with normal saline and 5% dextrose injection at 1: 1, 1:10 and 1:20 (v/v) even after 7 days. Permeation rates of progesterone through a cellulose membrane from 20% PEG 300 solution $(50\;{\mu}g/ml)$ containing HPCD or SBCD were compared with oily formulation. Permeation of progesterone from oily formulation did not occur up to 8 hr, but aqueous formulations showed fast permeation rates from early stage of permeation study. The addition of HPCD or SBCD retarded the permeation rates of progesterone with the increase of CD concentrations, suggesting the possibility of a controlled absorption from the site administered intramuscularly. These results demonstrate that it is feasible to develop a new progesterone parenteral aqueous injection (5 mg/ml) using SBCD.

  • In the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) via wet chemical reduction using tin(II) acetate precursor, the effects of green reducing agents (sugar) and a capping agent (gelatin) on the formation of NPs were analyzed as functions of synthesis conditions and time. When glucose was used as the reducing agent, it was observed that irregular chainlike shapes, aggregates of NPs, were formed during the synthesis at $70-110^{\circ}C$. The NPs were determined as $SnO_2$ from the fast Fourier transform (FFT) pattern. In the synthesis at $110^{\circ}C$ by using sucrose, fine spherical NPs of ~10 nm in diameter were formed after the synthesis time of 3 h. As the time increased to 9 h, the chainlike NP aggregates besides irregularly aggregated spherical NPs were also formed locally. However, the chainlike NP aggregates were only observed when the synthesis was conducted at $130^{\circ}C$. The spherical NPs and chainlike NP aggregates were analyzed to be pure Sn and $SnO_2$, respectively.

  • Mean background concentrations of greenhouse gases such as $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were estimated on Ulleungdo using PICARRO Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) analyzer. To improve the accuracy of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations, a standardized QA${\cdot}$QC (Quality Assurance Quality Control) procedure was employed with three steps: 1) the inspection procedure of physical limitation (e.g. the exclusion of data corresponding to the number of data of ${\leq}$50%) for hourly mean values, 2) a stage inspection (e.g. the use of data corresponding to ${\geq}15$ observations per day) for daily mean values, and 3) a fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis using curve-fitting methods for the investigation of climatic characteristics. The monthly mean concentrations of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ derived from three-step QA${\cdot}$QC procedure were then compared with those observed at Anmyundo (Korea) and Ryori (Japan). Overall, the error of mean $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations estimated in this study distinctly decreased. However, in comparison with their concentrations monitored at Ryori, the $CO_2$ concentration at estimated at Ulleungdo is soemwhat lower than that of Anmyundo due to the missing data, which is statistically significant. On the other hand, the former has a statistically significant higher value of $CH_4$ that of the latter.

  • In the OFDM system, IQ imbalance problem happens at the RF front-end of transceiver, which degrades the BER(bit error rate) performance because it affects the constellation in the received signal. Also, phase noise is generated in the local oscillator of transceivers and it destroys the orthogonality between the subcarriers. Conventional PNS algorithm is effective for phase noise suppression, but it is not useful anymore when there are jointly IQ(In-phase and Quadrature) imbalance and phase noise. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the effect of IQ imbalance and phase noise generated in the down-conversion of the receiver. Then, we estimate and compensate the IQ imbalance and phase noise at the same time. Compared with the conventional method that IQ imbalance after IFFT is estimated and compensated in front of FFT via the feedback, this proposed method extracts and compensates effect of IQ imbalance after FFT stage. In case IQ imbalance and phase noise exist at the same time, we can decrease complexity because it is needless to use elimination of IQ imbalance in time domain and training sequences and preambles. Also, this method shows that it reduces the ICI and CPE component using adaptive forgetting factor of MMSE after FFT.
