The morphology and genetic identification of Rasbora lateristriata and Rasbora argyrotaenia between cultivated and wild populations has never been reported. This study compares morphology and cytochrome c oxidase (COI) genes between farmed and wild stock Rasbora spp. in Java and Sumatra island, Indonesia. We analyzed the truss network measurement (TNM) characters of 80 fish using discriminant function analysis statistical tests. DNA was extracted from muscle tissue of 24 fish specimens, which was then followed by polymerase chain reaction, sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, fixation index analysis, and statistical analysis of haplotype networks. Basic Local Alignment Search Tool analysis validated the following species: R. lateristriata and R. argyrotaenia from farming (Jogjakarta); Rasbora agryotaenia (Purworejo), R. lateristriata (Purworejo and Malang), Rasbora dusonensis (Palembang), and Rasbora einthovenii (Riau) from natural resources. Based on TNM characters, Rasbora spp. were divided into four groups, referring to four distinct characters in the middle of the body. The phylogenetic tree is divided into five clades. The genetic distance between R. argyrotaenia (Jogjakarta) and R. lateristriata (Malang) populations (0.66) was significantly different (p < 0.05). R. lateristriata (Purworejo) has the highest nucleotide diversity (0.43). R. argyrotaenia from Jogjakarta and Purworejo shared the same haplotype. The pattern of gene flow among them results from the two populations' close geographic proximity and environmental effects. R. argyrotaenia had low genetic diversity, therefore, increasing heterozygosity in cultivated populations is necessary to avoid inbreeding. Otherwise, R. lateristriata (Purworejo) had a greater gene variety that could be used to develop breeding. In conclusion, the middle body parts are a distinguishing morphometric character of Rasbora spp., and the COI gene is more heterozygous in the wild population than in farmed fish, therefore, enrichment of genetic variation is required for sustainable Rasbora fish farming.

Monitoring for megalocytivirus infection was conducted for ten months from March to December in 2013 in 15 aquatic farms culturing, red sea bream, rock bream, rock fish and black sea bream around Tongyoung coastal area in Korea, to assess spatial and temporal variability of detection prevalence, and to explore possible links with seawater temperature. In nested-PCR targeted major capsid protein (MCP) gene, asymptomatic megalocytivirus infection was detected in the externally healthy farmed fish with a significant prevalence in range from 0 to 58.3% for ten months. Higher prevalence of megalocytivirus (46.7% - 57.1%) was observed in high water temperature season from September to November than that in other months with lower prevalence of 0.0% to 20.0%. Even though an acute infection of megalocytivirus was occurred in rock bream (positive in the first PCR) with high mortality in one of fifteen farms, there was no expansion or transmission of the disease to the rock fish and red sea bream culturing in net cage just proximal to the rock bream cage in which disease outbreaked. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cloned MCP gene isolated asymptomatically infected rock fish revealed that the megalocytivirus in this study was clustered together with the rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) under the subgroup II of the genus megalocytivirus (Iridoviridae), which is known to be the major megalocytivirus strain in Korea. The typical histopathological signs were not found in the spleen of rock fish asymptomatically infected by megalocytivirus. Experimental infection of rock bream with the spleen homogenate of the rock fish infected asymptomatically did not induce any mortality unlike the homogenate of infected rock bream with hih mortlity. However, these results may suggest that the asymptomatic infection of megalocytivirus in other fish species can be a potential risk threatening aquaculture industries as a transmission factor of megalocytivirus to susceptible fish species, especially rock bream.
About 10% mortality occurred in cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss at a marine farm in Jeju in 2014. Diseased fish showed markedly abdominal distension and distended stomach. Although parasites, bacteria or viruses were not isolated from diseased fish, numerous Candida sp. were isolated from distended stomach. In experimental infection with Candida sp., mortality was not observed in most fish and clinical sign of distended stomach was not observed in the fish. These results suggest that Candida sp. may not be the etiologic agent of stomach distension syndrome. This is the first report of stomach distension syndrome in seawater farmed rainbow trout in Korea.
In the present study, liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry was used to conduct a risk assessment of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer residues in 288 farmed fish sold in wholesale and traditional markets in Seoul. The detection range (detection rate) of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer was 0.005~0.309 mg/kg (4.9%) and 0.001~2.828 mg/kg (69.8%), respectively. Ethoxyquin was detected only in freshwater eels, loaches, catfish, and flatfish, whereas ethoxyquin dimer was present in all fish species. To estimate the dietary exposure levels of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer, the hazard index, calculated using the acceptable daily intake and estimated daily intake, ranged from 0.001 to 0.300%. Our results indicate that there is no significant exposure risk to humans from these farmed fish despite 10 farmed fish samples exceeding the maximum residue level (1.0 mg/kg as the sum of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer).

Improved fish post-harvest technologies (IFPT) have been promoted as more efficient methods of fish processing, preservation, and value addition than the traditional methods prevalent in developing countries. The adoption rates, however, do not appear to be convincing. The purpose of this study was to determine the socio-demographic and psychological factors that influence intention of Kenyan farmed fish traders to use IFPT. The technology acceptance model (TAM) was used to properly explain the impact of TAM constructs such as perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), and attitude (ATT), as well as socio-demographic factors such as gender, age, education level and fish trading experience on traders' intention to use the technologies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data using a semi-structured questionnaire from 146 traders in Busia, Siaya and Kakamega counties. At a significance level of p = 0.05, a linear regression model was used to examine the socio-demographic and psychological determinants of the traders' behavioral intention to use the improved technologies. The regression analysis revealed that PU (β = 0.443; p = 0.000), PEOU (β = 0.364; p = 0.000) and ATT (β = 0.615; p = 0.000) influence traders' intention to use IFPT, with ATT having the highest influence on intention. However, the traders' socio-demographic characteristics have no effect on their intention to use the technologies, as the coefficients for gender (β = 0.148; p = 0.096), age (β = 0.016; p = 0.882), level of education (β = -0.135; p = 0.141) and fish trading experience (β = 0.017; p = 0.869) are all insignificant. These findings show that the traders intend to use IFPT and will use them when it is in their best economic interests.
Pseudomonas is currently causing increasing mortality in farmed olive flounder in Jeju Island. It was previously reported that P. anguilliseptica is the pathogen causing the mortality. It is not known whether other sub-species are involved or not. In this study, P. fluorescens was identified from diseased olive flounder by a PCR-based diagnosis. Based on genomic sequencing and BLAST analysis, 5 out of 6 samples were closer with P. fluorescens than P. anguilliseptica. Our finding suggests that P. fluorescens may be the dominant species causing the disease in farmed olive flounder in Jeju Island, South Korea.

Black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegelii, is a commercially important fish in Korea. As a preliminary investigation into the effect of hatchery rearing for stock enhancement, we examined genetic diversity between wild and farmed black sea bream populations from Jeju using six microsatellite markers. High levels of polymorphism were observed between the two populations. A total of 87 different alleles were found at the loci, with some alleles being unique. Allelic variability ranged from 8 to 22 in the wild population and from 7 to 17 in the farmed one. Average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated at 0.87 and 0.88 in the wild sample. The corresponding estimates were 0.83 and 0.86 in the farmed sample. Although a considerable loss of rare alleles was observed in the farmed sample, no statistically significant reductions were found in heterozygosity or allelic diversity in the farmed sample, compared with the wild one. Significant genetic heterogeneity was found between the wild and farmed populations. These results suggest that more intensive breeding practices for stock enhancement may have resulted in a further decrease of genetic diversity. Thus, it is necessary to monitor genetic variation in bloodstock, progeny, and target populations and control inbreeding in a commercial breeding program for conservation. This information may be useful for fisheries management and the aquaculture industry.

This study was conducted to analyze the difference of body types within and between wild and farmed populations of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus using measured records of morphological traits. The results showed that surveyed traits and standard deviation were $1,355{\pm}742g$ of body weight, $48.01{\pm}7.79cm$ of total length, and $40.96{\pm}6.80cm$ of body length. Also body height, body shape index and condition factor were $17.19{\pm}3.43cm$, $9.99{\pm}0.74$ and $11.16{\pm}1.54$, respectively. As result of least squares mean and standard error for each trait assumed in this study, those of farmed population showed significantly higher than those of wild population in all traits, exclusively in total length and body length (p<0.01). Particularly, the values of the body height and the body weight of the farmed population were higher than those of the wild population in the same total length. And the phenotypic correlation coefficients of the body weight, the total length, the body length and the body height showed strong positive correlation in all populations. These result suggested that morphological differences exist in farmed and wild flounder. Therefore, introduction of wild flounder is essential for the future production to improve the body type of farmed flounder, and parental fish should be chosen by considering selection of commercially important traits in the production process.

The basic and main nutritive ingredients of two temperature (Anguilla japonica and A. rostrata) and two tropical (A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata) fresh water eel species that are farmed domestically were evaluated. With exception of A. rostrata, eels cultured at the same farm were used for analysis. The contents of crude protein were in the order A. marmorata (17.7%)>A. rostrata (17.5%)>A. bicolor pacifica (17.4%)>A. japonica (15.8%) and the contents of crude lipids were A. japonica (21.5%)>A. rostrata (15.4%)>A. bicolor pacifica (10.5%)>A. marmorata (8.9%). These values differed significantly even among the three species of eel farmed under identical culture conditions. In comparison, all four species of eel showed similar pattern in overall amino acid composition, although slight differences in the compositions of some amino acids were observed. The fatty acid compositions of muscle tissues were notably different among four species of eel, especially between the tropical and temperature eels. In a taste-test of the meat of the four eel species, which considered taste, flavor and texture, the overall preference was in the order A. japonica, A. marmorata, A. bicolor pacifica and A. rostrata.
On April of 2000 and February of 2001, a disease characterized by darkening, ascites and enlargement of the spleen occurred in flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, farmed near northern and eastern coasts of Korea. Various degree of necrosis including liquefactive-type was observed mainly in hemopoietic tissue of spleen and kindney. Certain tissue such as branchial soft tissue including epithelium showed a similar necrotic findings. But some tissues such as intentine had several necrotic clusters of wandering cells, being possibly leukocytes. Necrotic evidences of blood cells were evident in various tissues including hemopoietic tissues. Necrobiotic bodies were frequently encountered in blood smear preparations. Bullet type-virious were detected in the spleenic cells. Each virion was about 500 nm in diameter and 170nm in length. From these results, this disease was thought to be a rhabdoviral disease.
