Development of an Odor Abatement System for Swine Manure Treatment Facilities

  • This study was conducted to solve the problem of public grievance owing to odor of a pig farm. Odor emissions from pig production systems mainly originate from liquid manure storage and solid manure fermentation. The low-cost odor abatement system (OAS) for application at liquid manure storage tank and solid manure fermentation facilities was developed in this study. The OAS adapted odor removing principles of a biofilter and biotrickling filter. The OAS is very simplified in structure. The appearance of the OAS had a form of cylindrical or cubical shape. The system performance was monitored for about one year after stabilization. A 7 seconds empty bed contact time for the OAS was adapted to achieve the odor reduction levels. The commercial type of OAS was constructed with media comprised of wood chips. Moisture content always remained above 50% wet basis. Average ammonia removal efficiency for the developed design was 89% at the liquid manure storage tank. Also, the removal efficiency at a solid manure fermentation facility was 86% on ammonia.

Odor generation pattern of swine manure according to the processing form of feed

  • Feed has a great influence on the composition of swine manure, which is the principal cause of odor. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to simply change the shape of pig feed and control calories to find a suitable feed form for reducing the smell of swine manure. The experiment was conducted on 15 pigs from July to August 2021, and a total of three measurements were done. Three types of feed were evaluated in this study. The analysis items related to odor of swine manure are complex odor, ammonia, sulfur-based odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the case of complex odor, dilution multiples tended to decrease over time, except for type A feed. The concentration of ammonia in all types of feed decreased over time. Most sulfur-based odorous substances except hydrogen sulfide at the first measurement were not detected. Representatively, Decane, 2,6-Dimethylnonane, and 1-Methyl-3-propylcycolhexane were detected in VOCs generated from swine manure. The major odorous substansces in swine manure have changed from ammonia and sulfur compounds to VOCs. In order to reduce the odor caused by swine manure, it is ad-vantageous to use low-calorie feed consisting of pellet-type.

축산시설의 축종별 악취물질 농도 특성과 악취도 평가 (Assessment of Odor Characterization and Odor Unit from Livestock Facilities by animals)

  • At recent the number of livestock is increased and the size of farm has changed to large facilities in Korea. So the livestock facilities have become one of major sources of odor emission. The purpose of this study is to analyze the concentration and assessment of odor unit from livestock facilities for cow, dairy, swine and poultry. The eleven odor pollutants such as $H_2S$, ($CH_3$)SH, $(CH_3)_2S$, $(CH_3)_2S_2$, $CH_3N$, $NH_3$, $(CH_3)_2N$, $(CH_3)_3N$, butyric acid, valeric acid and isovaleric acid, measured for assessment of the odor concentrations from livestock facility. As the results, it is found that the major matters of odor from livestock facilities were $NH_3$ and $H_2S$. The highest concentration of $NH_3$ is measured as 15 ppm at henhouse and $H_2S$ is measured as 858 ppb at penpig facilities. In the comparison of the average odor unit from livestocks, it is found that the highest odor unit was from swine and the lowest odor unit was from cow facility. So odor unit from swine facilities was 12 to 30 times higher than the odor unit from cow facilities.

효소복합체가 양돈슬러리 및 돈사 악취발생에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Enzyme Complex on Odor Emission from Swine Slurry and Swine Buildings)

  • 본 연구는 효소복합체 처리가 양돈분뇨의 액비화 과정의 악취제어 가능성을 조사하기 위하여 액비저장 탱크에 4주간 저장하면서 효소복합체 처리, 폭기 처리, 효소와 폭기 동시 처리 및 대조구로 나누어 비교하였다. 또한 효소복합체를 돈사에 살포하여 돈사내 공기의 질과 양돈장 부지경계선에서의 복합악취농도를 조사하였는데, 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 효소복합체와 폭기 처리는 양돈분뇨의 액비화 과정의 암모니아와 황화수소 농도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사되었으며, 암모니아와 황화수소 농도는 4주간의 액비화 과정 동안 지속적으로 감소되었다. 효소복합체의 일정 수준 처리는 양돈분뇨 액비화 과정의 악취저감을 위한 효율적인 수단이 될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 효소복합체와 폭기 처리는 양돈분뇨의 액비화 과정의 총질소, 총인 및 암모니아성 질소 농도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사되었으며, 효소복합체 처리는 양돈분뇨 액비의 품질 유지와 악취저감을 위한 하나의 기술적 대안으로 충분한 것으로 보인다. 효소복합체 살포는 돈사내 공기의 질을 개선하고 양돈장의 부지경계선에서의 복합악취 저감에도 효과적으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과를 요약하면, 효소복합체 처리는 양돈분뇨 액비화 과정의 악취제어와 고품질 액비제조 가능성이 인정되며, 돈사 내부 및 양돈장 환경개선과 악취저감 효과가 있는 것으로 판단된다.

돈사 내에서 계절별 악취 발생 농도 조사 연구 (A Field Survey on the Odor Concentration in Piggery by the Change of the Season)

  • 본 연구에서는 축산농가의 사육규모에 따른 사육형태, 분뇨처리 방법, 악취저감 방법 등과 계절별 성장단계별 돈사 내 악취농도와 환기방식이 다른 두 농장의 부지경계 지점의 악취농도를 조사 연구하고자 하였다. 1. 돈사 내 암모니아 발생량을 조사한 결과 겨울철 육성비육돈사의 암모니아 농도가 가장 높았다. 그 이유는 돈사 보온을 위해 적정 환기 유지보다 밀폐 강화 등의 결과로 돈사 내 발생한 암모니아 배출이 적어 농도가 높아지는 것으로 보였다. 2. 돈사 내 악취농도 조사 결과 사육규모와 환기 방식이 관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 3. 환기방식이 다른 농장 두 곳의 부지경계 지점을 조사하고 악취농도를 측정한 결과 부지경계 인근까지 돈사시설이 활용되고 있었다. 암모니아($NH_3$)는 한곳의 농장에서 1.64 ppm으로 조금 높게 검출되었으며 $H_{2}S$, $CH_{3}SH$, $(CH_3)_2S$, $(CH_3)_2S_2$는 악취방지 법의 배출 허용기준 이하로 검출되었다.

Productivity increase and odor reduction effect of fermented barley sprout extract in broiler farms

  • The current study examined the impact of fermented barley sprout extract prepared using lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus sp.) in decreasing odor and increasing livestock productivity and measured the difference in the polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the extract after fermentation. Furthermore, the effectiveness of fermented barley sprout extract was evaluated through order level and production index of livestock by supplying it to a broiler house. The results showed that with fermented barley sprout extract, the polyphenol and flavonoid contents were increased significantly by 174% and 562%, respectively. When the extract was applied as an additive to drinking water in the test farm, the productivity improved by about 10%, the mortality rate was reduced by about 66%, and there was a significant decrease in odor by about 80%. Compared with the control group, the production index increased by about 21%, the feed requirement decreased by about 8%, the odor showed a decrease in the NH3 level, and no other gas was detected. It was observed that lactic acid bacteria settle in the intestine, suppress the proliferation of bacteria that cause diarrhea and enteritis, and help digestion. The lactic acid bacteria effectively remove bad odor gases such as NH3, Amines, H2S and CH4S. Such odor reduction improves productivity. Our findings provide valuable information for quality water supply, production optimization and livestock management.

축산농장의 악취 발생과 관리에 관한 실태조사 (A Survey on Current State of Odor Emission and Control from Livestock Operations)

  • This survey was conducted to investigate the current state of odor emission and control from 48 site of Hanwoo, dairy, swine and poultry farms in Korea. On-site complex odors assessment by the method of 6 step direct sensory evaluation and ammonia concentrations by portable gas detector on the boundary line of farms were evaluated and detected as 1.11 & 2.78 ppm, 1.67 & 2.56 ppm, 1.91 & 2.89 ppm, 1.8 & 2.4 ppm and 1.33 & 2.33 ppm, respectively. Almost of Hanwoo, dairy and poultry farms were nothing the complaints occurred for the last 2 years, however as 60% of swine farms were suffered odor complain. All of livestock operations were used the additives for improving the farm environment and spent the considerable costs for odor reduction. There were several plans almost farms, as a fortify maintenance, keep clean, tree planting, expansion facilities for manure treatment or odor reduction.

Intelligent Air Quality Sensor System with Back Propagation Neural Network in Automobile

  • The Air Quality Sensor(AQS), located near the fresh air inlet, serves to reduce the amount of pollution entering the vehicle cabin through the HVAC(heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system by sending a signal to close the fresh air inlet door/ventilation flap when the vehicle enters a high pollution area. One chip sensor module which include above two sensing elements, humidity sensor and bad odor sensor was developed for AQS (air quality sensor) in automobile. With this sensor module, PIC microcontroller was designed with back propagation neural network to reduce detecting error when the motor vehicles pass through the dense fog area. The signal from neural network was modified to control the inlet of automobile and display the result or alarm the situation. One chip microcontroller, Atmega128L (ATmega Ltd., USA) was used. For the control and display. And our developed system can intelligently detect the bad odor when the motor vehicles pass through the polluted air zone such as cattle farm.

밀폐형 돈사 작업장의 전체 환기율이 가스상 오염물질 노출 농도 변화에 미치는 영향 (Effect of General Ventilation Rate on Concentrations of Gaseous Pollutants Emitted from Enclosed Pig Building)

  • Objectives: The principal aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of gaseous pollutants emitted in enclosed pig buildings between different rates of general ventilation and determine the variations in the patterns of gaseous pollutants as affected by ventilation rate. Materials and Methods: The experiment was performed in the growing/finishing room($20.0m{\times}12.0m{\times}3.0m$) of a pig confinement building located on the experimental farm of Seoul National University. The conditions of the general ventilation rate for three treatments were 30%($4.12m^3s^{-1}$), 50%($6.87m^3s^{-1}$) and 70%($9.61m^3s^{-1}$). The data presented in the study were collected overa total of 45 days, 15 days for each of the three treatments from March to May 2011. A total of six air samplings were taken at 1.5m above the floor of the pig building. The environmental agents measured in the pig building were ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and odor concentration index for gaseous pollutants with temperature and hydrogen sulfide for thermal factors. Results: There were significant differences in the ammonia and odor concentration index in the pig building among the three general ventilation rate conditions(p<0.05), whereas hydrogen sulfide did not show a significant difference among three conditions of general ventilation rate(p>0.05). As the general ventilation rate applied to the pig building increases, it appears that all the indoor environmental agents measured in this study simultaneously decrease. Conclusions: The gaseous pollutants significantly affected by the general ventilation rate in pig building were ammonia and odor concentration index(p<0.05). However, it was found that hydrogen sulfide and thermal factors, temperature and relative humidity were not influenced significantly by variation in the general ventilation rate.

축사 주변의 악취 및 부유분진의 CALPUFF 모델링: 계사 중심으로 (CALPUFF Modeling of Odor/suspended Particulate in the Vicinity of Poultry Farms)

  • 본 연구에서는 시간별 실제 기상데이터를 토대로 한 CALPUFF 모델링 수행을 통하여 민원지역에 대한 신뢰성이 있는 모델링 결과를 도출하였다. 무창형 계사 P1 및 P2의 방진망 구조물(chamber) 및 개방형 계사 P3로부터의 오염원 배출 및 확산거동을, 부피오염원으로서의 CALPUFF 모델링 또는 각 방향의 배출면적을 가중치로 한 수직 배기의 평균 선속도인 모델 배출 선속도($u^M_y$)를 적용한 점오염원으로서의 최종 CALPUFF 모델링으로 구현하였다. 또한 계사 P1, P2 및 P3에서의 배출되는 악취 및 분진오염원 배출량에 대한 각각의 제거효율(0, 20, 50 및 80%) 또는 각각 대응되는 emission rate (100, 80, 50 및 20%)에 따른 시나리오를 기본으로, CALPUFF 모델링을 수행하여 각각에 대한 민원지역의 농도예측을 수행하였다. 이러한 민원지역에 대한 암모니아, 황화수소, $PM_{2.5}$$PM_{10}$에 대한 농도예측과 악취방지법 및 대기환경법에서 요구되는 오염물질 농도와 비교하여, 계사 P1, P2 및 P3에 요구되는 암모니아, 황화수소, $PM_{2.5}$$PM_{10}$에 대한 제거율을 산정하였다. 그 결과로서, "P1, P2 및 P3에서 각각의 배출농도를 줄인 비율만큼 각각의 discrete receptor에서의 농도가 같은 비율로 감소한다"는 가정(a priori assumption)이 본 CALPUFF 모델링 범위 내에서 적용 가능함이 입증되었다. 한편 부피오염원을 적용한 CALPUFF 모델링을 수행한 경우에서 방지시설의 요구되는 제거효율은, 점오염원을 적용한 CALPUFF 모델링을 수행한 경우와 비교하였을 때에 P1의 경우에는 상호간에 유사하였으나, P2와 P3에서 암모니아와 $PM_{10}$의 경우에 더 높게 나타났다. 그럼에도 불구하고 민원해결을 위한 안전한 접근방법으로서 부피오염원으로서 CALPUFF 모델링을 선정하였다. 이에 따라서 본 연구에서는 암모니아, 황화수소, $PM_{2.5}$$PM_{10}$와 같은 오염원배출에 대하여 무창형 계사 P1 및 P2에 요구되는 정량적 방지수준을 타당하게 도출하였다.
