  • In this paper, using the demographic information of each member of a family, we figured out which member of a family has more influence on channel selection. We conducted an experiment which subdivide each breadwinners' income into 7 phases, and analysis the influence when they watch TV. The breadwinners' influence on TV channel selection is increased as breadwinners' income is getting higher. In the case of spouses, they have consistent influence on TV channel selection without reference to their breadwinners' income. We conducted another experiment which subdivide the youngest person's age in each family into 4 phases to watch the influence on TV channel selection. As the youngest person grows, they have more influence. With the experiments conducted in this paper, we could draw an interesting result, and this result is expected to provide good services such as content recommendation by considering the context of each family.

  • Over the course of time, changes occur in family composition and members, and such changes impact housing life as well. In contrast to shared housing structures such as apartments, detached houses show a greater variety of changes to interior spaces such as family composition, rural area, natural environment, and modernization. The purpose of this study is to examine the change and factors in interior spaces in detached houses of rural area. Out of 40 houses studied in a 1995 survey, 23 showed changes when studied again in 2015, and 13 were selected for final analysis. This study indicated that at the time of the survey in 1995, two aspects of change occurred which showed in interior space only and internalization through interior-specific additions and improvements. An analysis of interior changes demonstrated there was significant change in kitchens, multipurpose rooms, and other spaces focused on housework and homemaking. Internalization through interior-specific is showed in balcony. As family member is increasing, it is intended to be increasing size of interior space; however, it is showed to increase size of interior space in the step that family member is reducing. It is reason that more spaces are needed when their children whose the old are living in detached houses of rural area are visited.

  • Migration studies that assume that decision making is done on an individual basis is overlooking the importance of the family factor. Considering that must people belong to families, it is more appropriate to view migration decision from the perspective of the family. This study analyzes the household migration decision whereby the alternatives are to stay, 10 undertake family migration or to undertake single migration of a member. In developing a conceptual model of household migration decision, it is assumed that the household's objective is to maximize household income which is a function of individual members' earnings. The benefits and costs of household migration and individual migration are identified and the household chooses the migration strategy that maximizes expected household income. When household members have conflicting earning prospects in the potential destination, the household considers single migration of the member with the best earning potentials. However, lone migration by a household member involves cost of family separation which is both monetary and psychic, and this study shows that lone migration is undertaken only when its net gains to the family are greater than the separation cost of the family. The major benefit of choosing single migration is the retention of home base in the place of origin which can serve as an insurance against the uncertainty of obtaining a job in the destination, the benefit that is unavailable in family migration. The conceptual analysis shows how a household's migration decision would depend on its members' economic roles and prospects in the destination. Besides the economic variables, social and life cycle variables of the family translate into separation costs and benefits of migration. This study indicates that one - earner family in low economic status but with good earning prospects and high separation costs is more likely to choose family migration over single migration.

Based on the results, implications of these findings, limitations, and future research were dicussed in general discussion.

  • The focus of this study was on the self-differentiation level of families with an elderly member suffering from dementia. Based on 340 questionnaires collected in Seoul and Gyeonggi, the study intended to explain the adaptation issues of those families. The variables of interest, which might be related to the self-differentiation, were chronic anxiety(i.e. stress), the family function, psychosomatic symptoms and the family's adaptation to care-giving. As a result of analyzing the effects of the variables potentially related to the self-differentiation level of care-giving families, the findings from this study were as follow. With decreasing self-differentiation level of the family caring for an elderly member suffering from dementia, the levels of stress and psychosomatic symptoms were significantly increased, but the family function and the adaptation to care-giving tended to decrease. Conversely, with increasing self-differentiation, the levels of stress and psychosomatic symptoms were significantly decreased, while the family function and adaptation to care-giving were promoted.
