A model to predict failure of designed-to-fail (dtf) fuel particles is discussed. The dtf fuel under study consisted of a uranium oxycarbide kernel coated with a single pyrocarbon seal coat. Coating failure was assumed to be due to fission gas recoil and knockout mechanisms and direct diffusive release of fission gas from the kernel, which acted to increase pressure and stress in the pyrocarbon layer until it ruptured. Predictions of dtf fuel failure using General Atomics' particle fuel performance code for HRB-17/18 and HFR-B1 irradiation tests were reasonably accurate; however, the model could not predict the failure for COMEDIE BD-1. This was most likely due to insufficient information on reported particle fuel failure at the beginning.
This study aims at postulating a simple methodology for predicting the failure modes of monotonically loaded reinforced concrete beam-column joints. All the factors that affect the failure modes of joints are discussed in detail using an experimental database of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints. The relative contributions of the strut and truss mechanisms to joint shear strength are determined based on the test results. A simple design equation for the beam longitudinal reinforcement ratio for joints with low, medium and high amount of stirrups is developed. The factors influencing the failure modes of monotonically loaded exterior beam-column joints are investigated in detail. Design charts that predict the failure modes of exterior beam-column connections both with and without stirrups are developed. Experimental data are compared with the design charts. The results show that the simple methodology gives very accurate predictions of the failure modes.
To simulate the large-scale failure evolution with current computational facilities, a simple approach, that catches the essential feature of failure mechanisms, must be available so that the routine use of failure analysis is feasible. Based on the previous research results, a simple analysis procedure is described in this paper for failure simulation. In this procedure, the evolution of localization is represented by a moving surface of discontinuity, and the transition between continuous and discontinuous failure modes are described via the moving jump forms of conservation laws. As a result, local plasticity and damage models, that are formulated based on thermodynamic restrictions, are still valid without invoking higher order terms, and simple integration schemes can be designed for the rate forms of constitutive models. To resolve localized large deformations and subsequent cracking, an efficient structural solution scheme is given for Static and dynamic problems.
Failure physics and statistical lifetime analysis constitute the two extreme ends of the reliability engineering spectrum, and studies that relate failure mechanisms to failure distributions have been near non-existent. This paper is an attempt to stimulate interest to fill the gap between the two extremes and proposes an approach of combining them through i) developing a failure mechanism model, ii) generating failure times by Monte Carlo simulation with the model, iii) deriving the failure time distribution and evaluating the product reliability, and iv) improving the product reliability by the sensitivity analysis. An application of the proposed approach to the BGA(Ball Grid Array) surface mount package is also provided.
This paper suggests a fracture simulation method for SFR metallic fuel pin under accident condition. Two major failure mechanisms - creep damage and eutectic penetration - are implemented in the suggested method. To simulate damaged element, stress-reduction concept to reduce stiffness of the damaged element is applied. Using the proposed method, the failure size of cladding can be predicted in addition to the failure time and failure site. To verify the suggested method, Whole-pin furnace (WPF) test and TREAT-M test conducted at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) are simulated. In all cases, predicted results and experimental results are overall in good agreement. Based on the simulation result, the effect of eutectic-penetration depth representing failure behavior on failure size is studied.
A good grasp of the failure mechanisms of resistance spot weld, widely used in joining the auto-panels, in essential to the structural/crashworthy analyses and integrity assessment of the whole auto-body. In this study, We provide an estimative model describing the failure behavior of resistance spotf weld, and apply the model to the finite element analysis of crashworthiness. First, in "Part 1-Failure Criteria", to be used for the finite element analysis of spot-welded structural panels of an auto-body, (i) a methodology for quantifying the spot weld failure and the accompanying failure criteria are presented, and (ii) the coefficients of the failure equation are determined by a munimum number of appropriate experimental tests. To achieve these, we derive the functional form of the failure envelop by limit analysis, and correlate it with the form in PAM-$CRASH^{TM}$ code, and also investigate the effect of the failure coefficients on the failure envelop form. An estimative model obtained in this Part1, as spot weld failure criteria is applied to the Macroscopic finite element analysis of autobody structural panels using PAM-$CRASH^{TM}$ code in Part 2.
Based on the heterogeneous characterization of concrete at mesoscopic level, Realistic Failure Process Analysis ($RFPA^{3D}$) code is used to simulate the failure process of concrete-filled tubular (CFT) stub columns. The results obtained from the numerical simulations are firstly verified against the existing experimental results. An extensive parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of different concrete strength on the behaviour and load-bearing capacity of the CFT stub columns. The strength of concrete considered in this study ranges from 30 to 110 MPa. Both the load-bearing capacity and load-displacement curves of CFT columns are evaluated. In particular, the crack propagation during the deformation and failure processes of the columns is predicted and the associated mechanisms related to the increased load-bearing capacity of the columns are clarified. The numerical results indicate that there are two mechanisms controlling the failure of the CFT columns. For the CFT columns with the lower concrete strength, they damage when the steel tube yields at first. By contrast, for the columns with high concrete strength it is the damage of concrete that controls the overall loading capacity of the CFT columns. The simulation results also demonstrate that $RFPA^{3D}$ is not only a useful and effective tool to simulate the concrete-filled steel tubular columns, but also a valuable reference for the practice of engineering design.
This paper presents a method for assessing the risk of wave run-up and overtopping of existing coastal defences and for analysing the probability of failure of the structures under future hydraulic conditions. The recent UK climate projections are employed in the investigations of the influence of changing environments on the long-term performance of sea defences. In order to reduce the risk of wave run-up and overtopping caused by rising sea level and to maintain the present-day allowances for wave run-up height and overtopping discharge, the future necessary increase in crest level of existing structures is investigated. Various critical failure mechanisms are considered for reliability analysis, i.e., erosion of crest by wave overtopping, failure of seaside revetment, and internal erosions within earth sea dykes. The time-dependent reliability of sea dykes is analysed to give probability of failure with time. The results for an example earth dyke section show that the necessary increase in crest level is approximately double of sea level rise to maintain the current allowances. The probability of failure for various failure modes of the earth dyke has a significant increase with time under future hydraulic conditions.
In the calendar and the advertising catalog, the surface is usually coated by coating polypropylene film. The delamination failure of coating film depends on surface roughness and quality of the substrate paper. In this paper, the mechanisms of delamination failure between the coating film and the paper is investigated by using the root cause analysis as one of techniques of reliability evaluation. The papers used in failure analysis are three kind products made by two domestic and one foreign companies. It found that the main causes of delamination failure between the coating film and the paper were the creation of microvoids caused by shape of filler and their growth caused by contraction of paper.
Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness GIC was performed by the impact test in this work The main goal of this work is to study effects of temperature in the impact test with glass fiber/polypropylene(GF/pp) composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C\;to\;-50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.
