  • In this study, a failure mode analysis of CNC machining center is described. First, the system is classified through subsystems into components using part lists and drawings. The component failure rate and failure mode analysis are performed to identify the weak components of a machining center with reliability database. The failure probabilistic function of mechanical part is analyzed by Weibull distribution. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is also used to verify the goodness of fit.

  • Triaxial compression tests were run to study on the undrained strength characteristics of fiber mixed kaolin clay(Hadong). The influence of various test parameters such as amount and aspect ratio(ratio of length to diameter) of fiber, confining stress was also investigated. Test results showed that the increase in aspect ratio was increased in deviator stress at failure, but no effect on pore water pressure at failure. Deviator stress at failure was also increased at 0.5% mixing ratio(weight fraction of fiber to that of soil solid) of fiber but it was, thereafter, decreased and wits reached to constant after 2% mixing ratio. On the contrary, Pore water pressure at failure was increased as mixing ratio of fiber was greater than 1%. Deviator stress and pore water pressure of both clay and fiber mixed clay(FMC) at failure were increased as confining stress was increased. Deviator stress of FMC at failure was about 10% larger than that of clay, but pore water pressure of FMC at failure was almost similar to that of clay.

  • The software reliability growth depends on the testing time because the failure rate varies whether it is long or not. On the other hand, it might be difficult to reduce failure rate for most of the cases are not available for debugging during operational phase, hence, there are some literatures to study that the failure rate is uniform throughout the operational time. The failure rate reduces and the reliability grows with time regardless of debugging. As a result, the products reliability varies with the time duration of these products in point of customer view. The reason of this is that it accumulates the products experience, studies the exact operational method, and then finds and takes action against the fault circumstances. I propose the simple model to represent this status in this paper.

  • This paper uses the finite element method (FEM) considering geometrically nonlinear strains to study the first ply failure of laminated composite skewed hypar shell roofs through well-established failure criteria along with the serviceability criterion of deflection. Apart from validating the approach through solution of benchmark problems, skewed hypars with different practical parametric variations are studied for failure loads and tendencies. First ply failure zones are also identified to suggest design and non-destructive monitoring guidelines to the practising engineers. Recommendation tables regarding the design approaches to be adopted in specific cases and factor of safety values needed to be imposed on first ply failure load values for varying shell curvatures are also suggested in this paper. Providing practical inputs to design engineers is the main achievement of the present study.

  • Most of joining processes for machine and steel structure are performed by butt and fillet welding. The mechanical properties and fatigue strength of their welding zone can be effected largely by the differential of generated heat and changes of grain size according to thickness of material and number of passes in welding process. In this study, it was investigated about characteristics of fatigue failure according to thickness of material and number of passes in cruciform fillet weld zone as the basic study for safe and economic design of welding structures. Fracture modes in cruciform fillet weld zone are classified into toe failure and root failure according to non-penetrated depth. It can be accomplished economic design of welding structures considering fatigue strength when the penetrated depth in fillet weld zone is controled properly.

  • Recently, with increasing interested in improvement of operational reliability and the systematic maintenance activities, the RCM analysis has been applied and tried to lots of applicable industries. This study covers applying the probability of failure cause to FMEA, and proposes an analytical method for this. Also, the measures of quantitative classification for the result of failure cause probability are addressed. Based on the field data, this thesis presents an identification for causes and characteristics of failure, and reviews them periodically from the above methodologies. As using FMEA applied the probability of failure cause, we in the future can look forward to improvement of efficiency for failure diagnosis & inspection, and reliability.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop failure pressure evaluation models, which are applicable to straight pipes and elbows containing an internally wall thinning defect induced by flow-accelerated-corrosion (FAC). In this study, thus, three dimensional finite element (FE) analyses are performed to investigate the dependences of failure pressure of internally wall thinned pipe on the defect shape, the pipe geometry, and the defect location and bend radius of elbow. Also, the existing failure pressure assessment models for externally wall thinned pipes are examined. Based on these, the new models for assessing failure pressure of piping components with an internally wall thinning defect are proposed. Comparison of failure pressure, predicted by proposed models, with FE analysis result shows good agreement regardless of pipe type, defect shape, and defect location and bend radius.

  • To guarantee 20-25 years to the lifetime of the PV modules without failure, reliability test of the module is very important. Field-aged test of the outdoor environment is required. However, due to time constraints, accelerated testing is required to predict the lifetime of PV modules and find causes of failure. Failure is caused by many complex phenomena. In this study, we experimented two accelerated tests about corrosion and fatigue, respectively. First, temperature cycling test for fatigue were tested and Coffin-Manson equation was analyzed. Second, damp heat test for corrosion were tested and Eyring equation were analyzed. Finally, using two-mode failure model, we suggest a new lifetime model that analyze the phenomenon by combining two kinds of data.

  • It was accomplished that failure analysis not only failure numbers but also power system components every years. and these informations help power system operation considerably. power system equipment were occurred a break down by natural phenomenon and aging but it was not able to predict this failure number. But many papers and technical repots study for each equipment failure rate and reliability evaluation methods. so this paper show a failure number prediction whole power system component using Markov theory not each component failure probability. the result present a next month system failure number prediction.
