  • This paper describes procedure to build a generic reliability analysis database structure and failure data during the conceptual design phase. Reliability prediction utilizing such supporting database system enable the designer to quantify the effects of varying design and operational constrains on mechanical component's failure rate. This leads to compare competing alternatives to the reliability improvement efforts.

  • The reliability data analysis for components of CNC machining center is studied in this paper. The failure data of mechanical part is analyzed by Exponential, Weibull, and Log-normal distributions. And then, the optimum failure distribution model is selected by goodness of fit test. The reliability data analysis program is developed with ASP language to use on the Internet. The failure rate, MTBF, life, and failure mode of mechanical parts are estimated and searched by this program. The failure data and analysis results are stored in the database.

  • The Korean Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has developed the rubber tired AGT system (Model: K-AGT) between 1999 and 2005. The K-AGT is a light rail transit system does not require a driver and generally operates on an elevated railroad for transporting passengers. Accidents caused by driverless vehicles can severely affect social confidence, safety and economy therefore, it is very important to minimize the occurrences of such faults, and to accurately perform detailed maintenance tasks and thoroughly investigate the cause of any repeated failures. This research develops the web-based Preventive Maintenance (PM) system for the KAGT train system. The framework of the PM system is based on performing a reliability analysis and a failure mode effects analyses (FMEA) procedure on all the sub-systems in the K-AGT system. Out of the devices that have a low reliability, the high failure ranked devices are included high in the list for performing the overall maintenance plans. Through registration of historical failure data, the reliability indexes can be updated. Such a process is repeated continuously and can achieve very accurate predictions for device operational life times and failure rates. Therefore, this research describes the development of the overall PM system consists of a reliability analysis module, a failure mode effect analysis module, and maintenance request module.

  • Accelerated life test models and procedure are developed to assess the reliability of Door switch. The main function of door switch is to operate bulb lamp and fan motor. The accelerated life test method and test equipments are developed using the relationship between stresses and life characteristics of the products. Using the developed accelerated life test method, the parameters of the ALT model and life time distribution are estimated and the reliability of the Door S/W at use condition if assessed. The proposed accelerated life test method and procedure may be extended and applied to testing similar kinds of products to reduce test time and costs of the tests remarkably.

  • Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) introduces a systematic method and decision logic tree for utilizing previous operating experience focused on reliability and optimization of maintenance activities. In this paper RCM methodology is applied on safety injection system for APR-1400. Functional Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FME&CA) are applied to evaluate the failure modes and the effect on the component, system and plant. Logic Tree Analysis (LTA) is used to determine the optimum maintenance tasks. The results show that increasing the condition based maintenance will reduce component failure and improve reliability and availability of the system. Also the extension of the surveillance test interval of Safety Injection Pumps (SIPs) would lead to an improved pump's availability, eliminate the unnecessary maintenance tasks and this will optimize maintenance activities.

  • In this study, a failure mode analysis of CNC machining center is described. First, the system is classified through subsystems into components using part lists and drawings. The component failure rate and failure mode analysis are performed to identify the weak components of a machining center with reliability database. The failure probabilistic function of mechanical part is analyzed by Weibull distribution. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is also used to verify the goodness of fit.

  • The procedure of design for reliability which consists of reliability analysis and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis(FMEA) is established and reliability assesment is performed for the nano-satellite air-launching rocket, Mirinae II. By means of using the reliability analysis result, the feasibility to insert the Mirinae II to the target orbit for given mission time under operating environment is assessed. During the reliability analysis process, the system is categorized by Work Breakdown Structure(WBS), and reliability structure is defined by both Reliability Block Diagram(RBD) and schematics of the system. FMEA is used to determine the risk priority number of components and parts. The target reliability is satisfied by changing the design of components and parts with high-risk, hence the design for reliability to put the satellite in to the target orbit safely has been performed.

  • In recent years, the deterioration of infrastructures is especially considered. In prestress concrete bridges, one of the important mechanisms of deterioration is the corrosion of the post-tensioned tendon due to environmental agents. In this study, the reliability analysis is performed for a prestress concrete box girder bridge under the pitting corrosion attack with considering the inspection and failure cost. The variation of life-time performance depending on inspection methods have to be quantified. The inspection methods with different accuracy of corrosion detection are presented and applied for model of reliability analysis. The computer program for analysis reliability index of the structure as well as updating process is obtained. An existing bridge is applied for illustrating the influence of inspection cost on the behaviors of structure. Subsequently, the benefit of inspection has shown to predict the time to failure of structure.

  • Purpose: PBA buried in underwater requires high reliability because of its mission critical characteristic and harsh operational environment during its life cycle. Therefore, various reliability improvement activities are necessary. The defect on PBA manufacturing process have been studied, as a result, many activities and standards have been presented. However, there are less studies regarding failure pattern on physical features based on design. In this paper, we studied a possible failure patten based on physical features that is related with manufacturing process of PBA. And reliability improvement design based on PoF (Physical of Failure) were intruduced in this paper. Methods: A reliability prediction simulation were performed on the components A and B of the H system using Sherlock Software which is a PoF commercial tool from DFR solution. Solder fatigue and PTH fatigue analysis based on thermal cycling profiles and random vibration was analyzed on three earthquake response spectrum. Result: It was validated that life time and reliability improvement design through solder fatigue and PTH fatigue analysis in case of component. For compoenet B, random vibration fatigue was additionally analyzed and validated reliability for earthquakes profile. Conclusion: In design stage prior to manufacturing, PoF can be analyzed, and it is possible to make a reliability improvement/validated design using design data. This study can be applied in every design step and contribute to make more stable development product.

Operational behaviour and reliability measures of a viscose staple fibre plant including deliberate failures

  • This Paper deals with the stochastic behavior and failure analysis of a Viscose Staple Fibre Plant which produces fibre for making clothes. The fibre making plant is a complex system with various subsystems as: Vendor (supplies Charcoal and Sulphur, raw materials for the process), Carbon di sulphide Plant, Acid Plant, Pulp Plant and Processing Plant. The considered system can completely fail due to failure of any of the subsystems. The Carbon di Sulphide Plant can fail in two different ways, due to lack of Sulphur or Charcoal. Processing Plant has the configuration 5-out-of-10: d and 6-out-of-10: f. It is also assumed that the system can fail due to workers strike and catastrophic failure. All failures follow exponential time distribution whereas all repairs follow general time distribution. Preventive Maintenance policy has been applied to reduce the failure in the system. Various reliability characteristics such as transition state probabilities, steady state behavior, reliability, availability, M.T.T.F and the cost analysis have been obtained using supplementary variable technique and Gumbel-Hougaard copula methodology.
